Snug Harbor Marina and Hotel

Our family of 4 booked a very last minute guided kayak tour with Snug Harbor and had no expectations at all. We just wanted to go kayaking and maybe see some ponies. Basia our amazing tour guide informed us that chances to see wild ponies were very low but we decided to go kayaking anyway. And lo and behold, a family of 3 ponies came to the edge of the water at the end of the tour and we were able to snap a ton of pictures. We saw eagles, egrets, turtles, snails and ponies ... overall it was a perfect outing. We will be back for the pony swim and book with Basia again. Thank you for the unforgettable kayak tour!

What an incredible experience! Captain John and Co-Captain Sofi provided an unforgettable experience. There is no guarantee with wildlife, but we were lucky enough to see ponies, dolphins, many eagles, and a variety of birds. The captain was very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and history. The boat was very clean. After this adventure, make sure you stop at Sofi’s sea shell stand to get a souvenir. I highly recommend this trip for everyone!

Our first visit to Chincoteague was absolutely unforgettable! From the stunning wildlife to the warm hospitality, we were blown away. Kayaking with Basia was a true highlight—since it ended up being just the three of us, the experience felt incredibly personal. We could have stayed on the water with her all day! As first-timers in a tandem kayak, we definitely had a learning curve. We even managed to get stuck in the muck for a moment (the joys of shallow water!), but Basia was so encouraging. Her clear directions got us moving again in no time. She is incredibly knowledgeable and taught us so much about the egrets, mallards, clams, and snails. Of course, the wild ponies were the stars of the show! Basia even gave us a tip to check out a spot near the inland lighthouse, which gave us an incredible, up-close view unlike anything else on the East Coast. We highly recommend Snug Harbor Marina and can’t wait for our next adventure!

Snug Harbor is the best place to stay on Chincoteague. I am a kayaker by nature and this is the best location for outdoor people. If you are a kayaker or boater or maybe a nature lover this is the best place! It is very close to the National Park and all the wildlife.

I recently took my mom to pony swim week in Chincoteague – it was the only thing on her bucket list. We stayed at Snug Harbor Marina and Hotel and had the time of our lives. What made it such a great experience was the owner Basia, her husband john, and Maria. They were so friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The room was quaint and very clean, it had all the amenities we needed. The fact that we were 25 feet from the water made it even more special. Captain John gave us the greatest boat tour. His local knowledge far surpassed anything you can read about Chincoteague. His family had been there for generations and knew the true history of the town. We would have loved to sit longer with him and just chat about the island and its history. All three of them were a wealth of knowledge. The location was incredible, with clear views of the lighthouse and the ponies on Assateague. My mom was afraid to get in the kayak but with Basia’s gentle coaching, my mom exceled! We enjoyed every activity but even our downtime was so enjoyable at Snug, we truly didn’t want to leave. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Snug Harbor is such a gem! We stayed as a couple four years ago and brought our two young boys back for a family vacation over the 4th of July. It’s such a peaceful spot, yet just minutes away from restaurants, activities, and the beach. If you can rent the two bedroom waterfront cottage, it’s hands down the best spot! We really enjoyed renting kayaks and our private boat tour at sunset! Everyone is so friendly and accommodating. We can’t wait to come back again!

I had a lovely bucket list adventure with Basia! Got up and personal with the ponies, birds, and periwinkles. She was knowledgeable, I learned so much, and enjoyed her company. Highlight of my trip! They were accommodating and helpful, and those were two hours I will never forget. Thank you!

The area around the marina is beautiful. The cottages are comfortable but have significant deficiencies. There are no closets or dresser, thus no alternative to living out of the suitcase. The internet was inadequate. In fact I had a better signal at the private beach area than inside the cottage. Thus the housing is way overpriced for what it is. This is true throughout Chincoteague. Restaurants are all over priced which may be the reason there are so many food trucks. Boat rides are very expensive. We had a water taxi ride that was perhaps 2-3 miles tops for $69 each. The private beach we went to was very crowded. Little did we know that the ocean beach was closed. No one told us.

You won't find better people, accommodations, or extra opportunities anywhere other than Snug Harbor! This is a small family-owned business that has been in operation for three generations, offering visitors to Chincoteague the most stunning views of the Assateague channel and lighthouse from every one of their beachside bungalows. The owners are some of the kindest, most welcoming people we have ever met. In addition to the Snug Harbor lodging (which is clean, comfortable, and adorable), Captain John, provides guided boat tours (we personally saw ponies, dolphins, and tons of sea birds on ours), and his wife, Basia, provides tours by kayak - these tours are *highly recommended*! Honestly, our week here was AMAZING, and there was not one complaint to be had... we can't speak highly enough of our time spent at Snug Harbor, and we will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Chincoteague!
