Really lovely hotel. Was very busy on arrival but booked to have a massage which was excellent. Room was large and a great view. Slight gripe would be that it was 2 beds pushed together.Evening meal was excellent. Had room service for breakfast in the morning, which was fantastic!! Will definitely go back ! Was so lucky with the weather.

This hotel is the friendliest hotel I have stayed in. I stayed with my wife and her two sisters last week for two nights. Every member of staff was helpful, friendly and professional. We had dinner here on the first night which we all thoroughly enjoyed, Luke, the deputy manager and sommelier, gave us great advice for the wines. The breakfast choice and quality was very good too. I would recommend this hotel very strongly.

Absolutely lovely ! Our room was super, clean and larger than average. Every single member of staff were so helpful, exceptionally polite and smiley. Toby was a gem. Food was fabulous especially breakfast . Spa was lovely although small but the lady that looked after us was so thoughtful.

"What a delightful discovery! The warmth and helpfulness of the staff truly enhanced my experience. The room was not just comfortable but exquisitely beautiful, complemented by a captivating view of the river. The culinary delights served in the restaurant were nothing short of exceptional. Departing was a challenge as I didn't want to leave. I am already planning a return, eager to stay longer. Thank you for such a remarkable stay!"

Despite being rather empty when we arrived it took a while for someone to come and take us to our table, once sat we were poured a glass of cool and crisp Midas Prosecco and served some Canapés - Olive & Hummus Crostini, Roasted Duck with Pickled Veg & Salmon with Cream Cheese - all tasty enough and a nice touch to have with the Prosecco but the ‘bread’ based items seemed a little stale. To drink my husband ordered a Peroni - after waiting quite some time (we were on to the starters) our drinks hadn’t arrived, it turns out the Peroni tap wasn’t working but it took quite a while to come over and offer an alternative, when the alternative was chosen it took a while to arrive as well, by which time we had nearly finished the starters. In addition to the delay with the Peroni my rose took the same amount of time to arrive and was more on the warm side but had a decent flavour - all in all less than ideal. For starters I had beef tartare, cured egg yolk & sourdough croute, the beef was very tender and tasty but the cured egg yolk was a weird addition as it was very hard, the croute was very brittle and oily too. My husband’s starter of Trout gravlax, cured chalk stream trout, beetroot slaw, basil oil & caviar was very light and fresh, tasty enough but missing a depth of flavour. On to the mains my husband had the Roasted salmon fillet, chive crushed potatoes, tender steam broccoli, cherry tomatoes & dill butter sauce - all very well cooked with flakey fish along with a deliciously flavoured and balanced sauce, the tomatoes could have done with being in the oven longer but that’s all. I decided to go for the ‘Surf & Turf’ - Beef fillet, scallop, king prawns, creamed mash potatoes & red wine jus. It was perfect, well cooked prawns and scallops, spot on rare steak which was soft to cut through and the red wine jus was full of flavour- couldn’t fault this at all other than wishing it was bigger as I could have eaten it all over again. Finally on to desserts… Strawberry and mint chocolate parfait, hazelnut crumb & ganache - it appeared nice on paper but the flavour combination just didn’t work and wasn’t very good on the palate - plus the appearance was awful, it looked messy and unappealing. The Chocolate fondant, clotted cream & raspberries on the other hand was brilliant, just as gooey as you would expect with the right amount of clotted cream and tartness from the fresh raspberries. Despite the 3 courses and canapés we were still hungry upon getting home, which we’ve never experienced before when having a meal out. Overall, as Valentines dinners go and taking everything in to consideration it wasn’t a great experience, it put a bit of a downer on the evening when it should have given that little sparkle - we wouldn’t rush back for dinner based on this experience, which is a shame as we had drinks and platters last summer which were fab. We were expecting far more from The Captains Club.

The food is OK but irritatingly the management still proclaim incorrectly that they do not own their car park. I am afraid Tim it is part of the dining experience getting fleeced for parking. Whoever may be interested just download the Land Registry deeds for £6 Captains Club owners are the Freeholder / Leaseholders but simply outsource enforcement presumably taking a cut.

Great place to stay with outstanding customer service. Was greeted very well, breakfast is good and is in a good location. Visited in late November the room was very spacious and was around Christmas time and the decorations were amazing. If i was in the area again I would defiantly have stayed.

My wife having recently recovered from a prolonged and serious illness, we decided on the spur of the moment to go for a long weekend away, not involving too much travelling. Although we have visited the CCH on many previous occasions for lunch we had never actually stayed there before but as I had recently received an email from them I called on Tuesday to check availability for that coming weekend and spoke to Katie in their reservations department who couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful, and she even arranged a reserved disabled car parking space for us in the car park. We booked a double, river-facing room with a walk in shower on a bed, breakfast and dinner basis for 3 nights from Friday to Sunday, departing on Monday. The room, which I believe had been recently refurbished, had a wow factor on entering it with a wonderful view of the River Stour and very spacious with plenty of drawer space, seating and good lighting, tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water (which was replenished every day). Most importantly it was spotlessly clean. One other notable plus was the large size of the bath towels, rarely seen in most hotels these - normally not much bigger than a hand towel! We found ALL the staff, without exception, to be extremely friendly, pleasant, and efficient and we got the impression that this was a very happy 'team' who all enjoyed their respective jobs, which was reflected in the way they treated the guests. Breakfast was delightful with a good selection of fruit juices, cereals and pastries, complemented by a good choice of hot food. Likewise, dinner was also very enjoyable with a good selection of choices, all portions being generous , well cooked, and delicious. In both cases the service was superb but special thanks must go to Christian, the restaurant manager, for the personal attention he gives and the courtesy he shows to all the guests, constantly checking that they are happy with both the food and service. Special thanks also to James at reception who was also most courteous and helpful, but as I have said earlier 10 out of 10 to ALL the staff at the CCH. The bottom line is that having had such a lovely experience during our first stay at the CCH we have already made a reservation for another 3 night stay in April, this time bringing some friends along as well. I'm pondering whether to actually send this review as I am sure it will encourage many others to stay at this wonderful hotel and, if this is the case, I may find it difficult to book any future reservations. However, as I really think it deserves the accolades, here it is.

I enjoyed a lunch at the restaurant. I payed for 3 hours parking but only stopped for 2 hours. A week later I received a £60/100 fine because of an error on my parking ticket! The management wasn’t interested. I would not recommend using the Captain’s Club restaurant car park.
