What a fantastic place. Without doubt the best welcome we’ve ever had. Rich and Jo on reception were amazing. Couldn’t help us enough. If you want a peaceful break, open your window and listen to the waves lapping at the shore. Then this is the place. Simply beautiful.

My wife and I had the most wonderful experience in Clovelly and the Red Lion. We stayed for 4 nights while walking sections of the South West Coast Path. The hotel room was tastefully decorated with a wonderfully large bath, a must to ease aching muscles after a days walking. The restaurant was amazing with superb food and highly attentive service. In the village of Clovelly we met so many welcoming people that made our stay such a memorable experience. And the village owner, the ever so charming Hon John Rous also engaged with us, taking a keen and sincere interest in our experience and views.

Avoid unless you’re happy to pay over £30 for two meals only to be told that you have to eat it with wooden knives & forks out of a cheap & nasty takeaway box and…. When we questioned this to be told that “they simply cannot be bothered to run around outside picking up plates and cutlery that people leave in their outside area”!! Really?!

Fantastic food and service. I called ahead to ask about vegan options and although there wasn’t much on the standard menu they were happy to create some vegan dishes just for us. The food was great and the service was outstanding and very attentive. Added to this the location is beautifully situated by the old harbour wall with a great view of the coastline. A great all-round experience.

Disappointed. Lack of choice on menu and over priced. Only Ordered some chips to eat in which we collected ourselves in a plastic takeaway box. Our drinks were in plastic cups. Bar staff watching TV in the main bar area which was to loud and changing channels regularly. Won't be calling in again.

This was not the place we intended to stay in Clovelly, however due to some misunderstanding with the accommodation we did book diverted our stay down to these guys. From our initial phone enquiry right down to check out, they were amazing. Accommodation clean and tidy, food absolutely delicious. Every member of staff cheerful, polite and attentive. This may not be the only accommodation in Clovelly but this is the only place I’d stay when I return to Clovelly. A massive Thankyou to Richard, Jo and all the staff for making our stay as special and good as it was Best wishes Adam and Bileigh

Wow, what an amazing stay. Great staff, fab location (we stayed in the Sail Loft) and food to die for. We enjoyed the local spirits served in the bar and the hotel and accommodation was spotless. No wall scuffs, very well maintained and looked after. Would highly recommend.

My wife and I had an overnight stay here. We stayed in the sail loft, on the ground floor. We had a nice stay and enjoyed the experience. It's nice being in Clovelly in the evening when all the crowds have gone. We would stay in the lower level rooms in the sail loft again. The walkway is directly outside your windows, meaning we had to keep the net curtains closed, for privacy. This unfortunately ruined the great sea view. Our friends stayed in the upper floor room in the sail loft and didn't have that problem. We chose to have dinner in The Snug rather than the restaurant. No regrets there, great pub grub rather than the fine dining offered in the restaurant and the price difference reflects this. Breakfast was very nice. One thing that confused us was the main bar at the front of the premises. It's more like a canteen than the old historic pub that it should be. It has modern wood-look wipe-clean tables rather than the gnarled old sold wood ones that it desperately needs. Overall, this place is an experience I would recommend fir one or two nights.

Found on a tiny, picturesque quay on the dramatic coastline at the bottom of the village of Clovelly, The Red Lion is a haven; friendly, attentive staff, a warm welcome, luxurious rooms, delicious food & a great range of local beers & ciders, as well as a superb cellar of wines. We stayed in the sail loft adjacent to the hotel - huge, comfortably equipped & warm rooms, but up a flight of outside steps & along a balcony, which was challenging in the blustery conditions, and very slippery when wet. The hotel & its' restaurant are as popular in the winter as during the summer, so BOOK! Room, dinner, breakfast, parking.....book! Our room had stunning sea views, and we fell asleep & woke up to the sound of the surf crashing into the rocky shoreline. There is a cosy snug bar warmed by fire, a larger bar overlooking the quay (both of which serve excellent food) and a more fine dining restaurant above, again with great views. Staying gives you free access to everything in Clovelly village and Clovelly Garden, a valuable 'extra'. Access and hotel parking are down a precipitously steep single track road with passing places; only for those with good brakes & strong nerves.
