This is a lovely old house so don’t expect corporate styling like a travelodge. Our room (9) was on the ground floor and overlooked the beautiful garden. We watched squirrels and a variety of birds from the window. The room does need a little bit of refurbishment but nothing that spoiled our stay. The beds were comfy with nice white bedding and good white towels. Plenty of hot water while we were there and nice quality complimentary toiletries. Well stocked hospitality tray with nice biscuits which were replaced when we ate them. The owner is a little quirky but we had a very pleasant conversation with him when we arrived. We were visiting family so didn’t eat at the hotel.

Like other reviewers, we arrived in the pitch dark. Fortunately the satnav got us to the exact point or we might have struggled to find it. There are light pillars along the drive but they were all off. Reception was unmanned and when we phoned the number left on the desk we were told we'd have to wait ten minutes as he was with somebody else. When he appeared he couldn't find our booking, despite me having the emailed copy. Somehow he'd put it in for the wrong night. He was duly apologetic, but it wasn't impressive. My wife suggested we leave there and then and I should have listened to her! I told her later we would laugh about it in a few years time once the trauma had worn off! The whole building is very tired. It was clearly a beautiful property once, with lovely gardens - and it could be again but it needs some money spent on it - quite a bit of money. Our room was ok, but very dated. The rewiring that has been done has been largely through surface mount conduit, which rather detracts from what could be a very splendid room - if the decor and facilities were updated. The bathroom was also very tired and dated and in need of major update. The shower took about ten minutes to run warm and barely achieved more than a spirited dribble. Breakfast was ok - the lady serving was very pleasant and helpful. The dining room could be a beautiful room with lovely wood panelling, but it has been somewhat spoilt by the health and safety required features. At £100 for the night, it was not cheap - so very poor value for money.

We have spent delightful weekends in many places – in the UK and abroad. This was most certainly not one of them. In fact, it more than deserves the damning accolade of the Worst Ever. Why? Because of the main “features” that awaited on opening the door to Room 6. These are captured in the accompanying photos. In particular: • mouldy, damp bath and bathroom, with permastained window and antiquated shower – all in disgusting condition • stained carpeting • a non-working electrical point with its own DIY hazard warning sellotaped to the wall • similarly-looking, badly made and presented DIY entrance door. The rest of the establishment is dark, dilapidated and unwelcoming, with no signs of any updating or modernisation since well into the last century. It smells of cigarettes and cooking. We left almost immediately after seeing all this, but have still been charged over £100 a night. Do not be fooled, as we were, by the apparently OK overall guest rating score. On this evidence, it is a shocker.

Very hard to find no lights on the gate we drove past about three time and tried to ring

Convenient to town centre. No lights on driveway, which made entry at night difficult. A 'tired' hotel, beds were comfortable but there was mould in the shower room. Excellent breakfast, a nice dining room

This is the most revolting hotel I have ever been to. The room stank of cigarettes which was ingrained in the shabby old curtains. No amount of fancy wallpaper will make this place look good. The bathroom was full of mould and the grouting filthy. The windows were running with condensation. We booked for two nights but didn’t stay at all as the mould, damp and smell of cigarettes set off my husband’s asthma. The owner is unbelievably rude and misogynistic and wouldn’t return our money. Please avoid this place at all costs

Well we enjoyed it-- a little cold at first but the nice lady got us a heater and the room soon warmed up! Looks like it might be a bit hit-and-miss- but you never know until you try how things will turn out. Good breakfast and a comfortable restaurant in which to eat it. We stayed in room #1

So if you are looking for a modern hotel then this is not the place for you. This is a lovely old building in a fab location and easy parking! The staff cannot do enough for you and although it needs some updating, the room we had was spotlessly clean! The breakfast service was excellent! We stay in Ely quite often and although stayed in other places we always return to the Nyton!

Every thing bad! The proprietor constantly played music at an extreme volume, a level at which the floor in our room vibrated. This started when we arrived ( 6pm), although intermittent at first, when we returned from dinner with our relatives (9.30) the music resumed. At 10.30 I went down to the lounge to ask for it to be turned down. I found the owner sat in the dark, alone, playing the music. He asked if it was too loud? Astonished at such a question, as the volume was ear splitting, he turned it down. I'm uncertain if he was burning particularly spicy logs on the fire, however there was a strong aroma consistent with 'herbal' cigarettes! At breakfast we were subjected to a similar volume emanating from the kitchen , this time accompanied by his singalong, the waiter apologised and noted that this was usual at breakfast!. The Beds ( we required a twin as I am currently undergoing chemo therapy, to which a good night sleep is important) were a match for the décor, at least 30 years old-see photos, every movement resulted in a squeak or graunch from the mattress springs and bed frame, the floor would have been more peaceful and probably more comfortable. The ceiling had multiple cracks, and the smoke alarm flashed brightly all night. On the wall between the beds was some form of clock/radio - a mystery antique to match the curtains. The full English was provided in a sea of grease, toast arrived cold and the cereal was stale. We had originally booked for two nights but not willing to suffer a repeat night, checked out right after breakfast. At checkout the proprietor asked if everything had been ok and apologised for the music, by this point I had read the previous reviews of the hotel and realised that this was in fact the norm for this hotel as others had experienced the same disturbing factors. I simply paid and left. I was clearly leaving because of the noise etc but no offer of a reduction was made and so I was charged for both nights.
