Hotel Le Charles Viii

Stayed in this hotel for a few nights in august after a problem with another booking. It is really an overnight sort of place and ideally situated for a channel crossing but it proved to be a comfortable, clean and welcoming place. There is parking in the square opposite (though it is restricted during the day) but we found no difficulty in parking in the street - there are usually spaces. The room was a good size with a new bathroom and great shower; we overlooked the courtyard and am not sure whether the rooms with river view would be better (they may well be hot). The bed was good for me - and a queen size at least. The staff and the owners were very helpful and pleasant. We didnt have breakfast - the bakery nearby was fine for us though we also found aother just off the town square. There was a supermarket behind the station. Apart from the obvious attractions we found that sitting by the estuary of an evening was a delight and the Etaples market was certainly up to its billing as one of the best in france. Our only slight beef is that is seemed a tad expensive for what in the end is listed as a two star - I would be interested in what the other hotels in Etaples are like.
