This YHA is in a stunning, remote location. It is just off the Pennine Way, but when we stayed it was mostly families with children. The hostel has a lovely view from the window, the white-pained farms of the Raby Estate, and is well equipped with board games and books. We did as we always do, made friends with the other occupants and came away refreshed and happier than when we arrived. Its self catering, but the hostel will sell beer and wine (until about 8pm). Rooms are clean. What sells this hostel is the location, and you are within walking distance of some of England's finest landscapes, and High Force is a must visit.
Response from Property: Dear Paul, Many thanks for your glowing review! I agree that (when the sun shines) it is one of the best places to be in the whole of the UK- but maybe I'm a tad biased!

We used this youth hostel as attending the passport office in Durham x due to accident we were diverted making our check is in late x I called a head and the guy on reception waited until we arrived x I was literally on petrol fumes and panicking about getting to the passport office for 9 x the guy in reception was really helpful he googled information and we located a petrol station that was open x he even said if we run out of petrol he would come and collect us even though he would have to replace a tyre on his car x he was really helpful and calming as I was stressed The room was clean and spacious x good toilet and shower facilities x beds were comfy x The YH is miles from anywhere it is so peaceful with beautiful views x I would definitely stop here again and it is really good value for money x pause £24 for a night x
Response from Property: Dear Janet, No worries at all- that's what we are here for! I wish I'd had more concrete knowledge of the area for you, but am still quite new myself. It would have been nice to know for sure about that 24 hour fuel at Mickleton. Anyway- very glad that everything worked out for you! Perhaps see you again some time!

Great hostel manager and team who provide an excellent welcome and support whilst staying at this fabulous remote hostel. A more traditional hostel which only offers self-catering (pub down a short walk down the road if needed) and a great chance to meet other like minded people - so a lovely couple of nights chatting to others about walking and cycling in the area and wider experiences. Rooms, toilets, showers and social spaces all spotless and in pretty good condition. Quite a few different opportunities for walking directly from the hostel; so across the High Cup Nick one day and along the valley to High and Low Force another. The icing on the cake is the beautiful views across the valley from virtually every window!
Response from Property: Thank you for the great review! It's all you lovely guests that really make the place- as well as the views!

Warm, friendly welcome from Rob in this quiet, traditional self catering hostel. Rooms and bathrooms spotlessly clean and kitchen well equipped. Great views from the social area and worth nipping out in the dark for amazing star gazing. Easy access to walk out onto the Pennine Way - we followed the river path the Bowlees visitor centre then back up to Cow Green Reservoir. Lovely meal in Langdon Beck pub which has recently reopened. Pub grub at its best! Aiming to head back shortly to pick up walks to Cross Fell and High Cup Nick.
Response from Property: Thank you so much Graeme for your kind words, glad you enjoyed your stay! Look forward to welcoming you back some time soon.

A must stay for those wanting to get out into the great outdoors. Very warm welcome and very good facilities. Very clean and warm with a log fire and lots of games to entertain you and the family. Highly recommend the view and would stay again.
Response from Property: Thank you very much for that lovely review! The views here are indeed spectacular- when the sun shines of course!

A traditional youth hostel in a fabulous setting overlooking Cronkley Scar with walks from the door as well as being on the Pennine Way. Great base for visiting Teesdale and Weardale - a breathtaking journey over Harthope Moss from Langdon Beck to St John's Chapel. The hostel itself has all you need. We stayed in a private room with shared facilities. All very clean. Great social space with beautiful views. Excellent value for money. I joined the YHA last year as have been travelling for a work project and find them great places if you want a warm and comfortable place to return to after a day hiking and exploring. Very friendly staff who gave us a lot of their time. Definitely recommend this place.
Response from Property: Dear Sarah, many thanks for the review. I know the road you mean from Langdon Beck to St John's Chapel. I have managed to struggle to the top on my bike but have never faced the long decent as I knew I would have to climb back out again!

The upper Tees valley is so beautiful and that beauty can be appreciated from the hostel which offers splendid views from it front windows. The walks are the best and can start at the hostel although we opted to drive a short distance to Cow Green reservoir, interesting in itself, to walk to High Cup Nick. Whilst the hostel doesn't offer any food, there is an excellently equipped kitchen. The drying room would be useful for those not infrequent wet days and perhaps most important of all, the hostel staff were most pleasant and helpful
Response from Property: Dear Paul, many thanks for your kind review. Although we only cater for groups here at the hostel, I am pleased to report that the Langdon Beck Hotel has now reopened after a refurb and serves food.

A YHA hostel in the old tradition; good basic accommodation in wild country, and strictly self catering, (although the drinks cabinet has recently been restocked ;-) If that meets your expectations then this is a wonderful place to stay, walk, and visit waterfalls - the popular High Force is only a couple of miles down the valley, while Cauldron Snout further upstream is well worth a visit.

Excellent location, beautiful walks at the door and very good facilities to come back after a long walk in the nature. All age groups are catered with well stocked kitchen, lounge (with games for children) and no TV for a change. Clean toilet/shower facilities and friendly staff complete the picture. Go pack your bags :-)
Response from Property: Thank you so much for the lovely review, and I'm glad you had a good time here! Look forward to welcoming you again at some point soon perhaps.

This is an absolute gem of a YH, in a wonderful location, perfect as a base for walking and cycling from the doorstep. Great facilities, gorgeous views and the manager, Rob couldn't have been more helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and am hoping to come back in the near future with a school party in tow! Many thanks indeed!
Response from Property: Dear Lisa, I am very pleased that you enjoyed your stay! Look forward to seeing you again before too long!

My partner and I stayed here for two nights over the Easter bank holiday. It was so nice to get away and surround ourselves in nature. From lapwings and curlews to sheep outside our window it was a brilliant escape we so desperately needed. We arrived a little earlier and with no staff there yet we were unable to get it, luckily a guest kindly told us the code to get it. The communal space is a good size with chairs and dinning tables. Lovely views of the surrounding area and a selection of board games that are hung from the wall. Staff were lovely, friendly and very helpful, the room was a small priviate room with a bunk bed and sink and a nice view out over the fields. The bedding was lovely, some of the best I've had at YHA, walls are very thin. We could hear our neighbours muffled voices and coughs, but seeing as we'd be chatting to them downstairs prior to bed we didn't mind at all. Other then that it was very peaceful night's sleep. There is a kitchen for cook and has everything you need, the hostel does have a selection of beer and wine on hand and there is a pub a way down the road too. We had a very comfortable stay, chatting to people, making connections, seeing the wildlife and having a camp fire outside on our second night. It was wonderful! Everyone seemed to come together and it was very relaxing. We can't wait to return!
Response from Property: Dear Andrew, so pleased you had a great stay! From my point of view, it is you guys that make the atmosphere so special. I'm glad we are here to provide a communal experience- so needed in these times. Look forward to seeing you again at some point soon!
