We decided to meet up with friends at the Wray as it has become a favourite bar/restaurant, so we phoned through a Saturday night reservation and were told how much they looked forward to see us. Fast forward to Saturday night, and there was no record of the reservation, and all of the tables in the lower dining area were occupied. We settled for a table near the bar. Most of the furniture had been removed from this bar, which was very strange. We would discover the reason. I ordered the three-cheese chicken parmi, which was served in good time, and was delicious. My wife ordered the beef cheek gnocchi. I’ve had it before and loved it. This time, it appeared to be mostly gnocchi and sauce, which very little beef cheek to be found. She said it tasted “underwhelming.” But the worst was the spice bag, ordered by two of my friends. It promises “Crispy golden fries, crumbed chicken strips, stir fried onion and bell peppers, secret seasoning, Mc Donnell’s curry sauce”. In reality it was mostly chips which has been under the warmer for a long time. The chicken strips were few and far between, and there were two tiny squares of bell pepper on each plate. The sauce was described as “inedible”. My friends were too polite to send it back, which is what I would have done. While this was being served, we discovered why most of the furniture had been removed. There was a 40th birthday party on, and guests soon had the place packed. The noise they made was deafening - nudging 90dB on my phone app - and made it impossible to hold a conversation. This was the worst night out I have had in a long time. Don’t expect to see me again soon.
