Funchal Design Hotel

The location is fabulous for walking to restaurants and shopping and even the port! Front desk staff are very attentive, coming out of their office most times guests walk in or out. The only reason I'm giving a medium rating is the beds felt like a board. The hotel is thin and situated on a corner, so I don't think it has many rooms. We were on the top floor, the 4th, and my room was on the end so it had one slanted wall. The bathroom mirror and glass sliding door that could be slid to separate the bathroom from the bed were both slanted at an angle. It was ok for me at 5'8" but a taller person could've been bothered. My room had two closets and a small desk until the TV. The window shades worked by remote but when open, the 4th floor is above the treeline so you can see the lights of the island. We enjoyed the hotel breakfast buffet each morning, with fresh fruit grown locally, like the bananas the island is known for.

We had a booking at this hotel in the city center of Funchal. We had spent a week in little town of Ponta do Sol with ocean view and spa. We were looking forward to stay here, but upon arrival we were told that they could not give us our room. The precious guests were injured from a hiking accident and had to stay (doctor’s orders). So the hotel staff told us at check-in about all of this and told us that they had a new reservation for us in another hotel. Not in city center. With a spa and a sea view. We were NOT impressed by that and decided to leave our booking and make a new one on our own in the city center. (We stayed at Barcelo instead). We would have appreciated a message from this hotel as soon as they knew about all of this. Not only upon arrival. Sadly not a great review for them.

Just got back today from Maderia. We stayed in Funchal Design Hotel. I cannot rate this hotel enough. Staff were warm, friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. Ido not understand the criticism being given on some reviews, what do they want? The place was exceptionally clean and central to where you need to be / get to. Don't hesitate to book this place you won't regret it.

Due to glitch in the reservation system, the hotel was overbook. We were transported by hotel's shuttle to their other property Hotel Quinta Mirabella. Beautiful hotel with excellent views. Every was perfect there.Little bit further from the centre of Funchal, but the hotel provided the shuttle few times per day. There was also bus stop around the corner - very convenient .

The hotel is very close to the city, therefore you have some traffic noise. But the distance is of course also nice - just view steps and you enter the city center!

Enjoyable stay with friends in this lovely city based boutique hotel. Ideally situated for exploring funchal. We used the Hotels courtesy bus one day to take us to their sister hotel, which had amazing views. Room was very comfortable, no complaints. Staff lovely, very attentive and helpful. Breakfast was varied. Would definitely stay again. Thank you to all the staff who made our holiday so enjoyable.

Very small, on steep hilly road. Very overpriced for the small room, but the front desk people were very nice and the breakfast was good.

Small hotel.Room was almost L shaped but included small kitchen, dressing area, seating area, shower room as well as bedroom so plenty of space. Breakfast had a good choice, was of excellent quality and staff were very friendly and helpful. There is no communal area or rooftop terrace so this is a hotel for those who want to be out and about for most of the day. In the respect the location is very good for central Funchal and is sufficiently close to the sea front as to not involve much of a hill climb on the return journey.
