This is a quiet, small, lovely luxary hotel in a beautiful setting up in the mountains. We enjoyed a spacious, cozy room on the second floor with a wonderful view overlooking the garden. It even had a small balcony! The restaurant is great, breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner were delicious - we enjoyed every bite of it. The service is friendly and we felt very welcome by everyone. Do not forget to visit the Palheiro Gardens and the Spa! It's free for the hotel guests. The location is perfect: Off the beaten path but not too far from the action (15 min to downtown Funchal). Highly recommended!

This is a very good hotel. We had a really comfortable, spacious and clean room in the main house which was kept immaculately by the housekeeping staff during our stay. Everything about this hotel is, correctly, geared to guests' enjoyment and peace of mind; nothing was ever too much trouble for any of the friendly staff to arrange or sort out. We ate in both the main restaurant and the Golf Club and the food was excellent in both. We look forward to returning, as rarely have we found such a complete hospitality package.

A charming and elegant property set high in the hills with glorious gardens and grounds. A beautifully managed hotel with excellent service in all departments - our suite was bright spacious and luxurious. There is an hotel shuttle to take you to Funchal, although we used taxis which were organised for us by the front staff. Surrounded by nature walks and the golf course the views down to Funchal are astounding. Bar lounge and restaurant of the highest quality. And it was fun!

If you like tranquillity, this is the hotel for you, it's like stepping back in history, an idyllic place to read, rest and stroll through its spectacular gardens.The staff are lovely, always willing to help. The breakfast is very complete, homemade pastries, good fruit, delicious bread.... The lounges with the fireplace invite you to chat with the family and read. The garden is as if you were walking somewhere in a novel.

This review is for the restaurant Casa Velha do Palheiro. A really great experience: the decor brings you back to the British empire, with a very cosy atmosphere. Service is impeccable, friendly and very professional. And the food is very very good, traditional Madeiran revisited. A great San Valentin!!!

Spent a week here to both relax and play golf. Holiday was cut short when our flight was diverted for 24 hours to Tenerife due cross winds at Funchal airport. Apparently quite common. But hotel was worth the wait! Lovely staff - special shout out for Luis (restaurant manager) for whom nothing was too much trouble; Braulio (also in bar/restaurant) and Rita at the Tea House. Golf was great - not mine(!), but the course has amazing views and was not too busy. We ate several times at the clubhouse. The food was excellent and the staff really friendly. You can sit outside - the view over Funchal and the coast is beautiful. We will hopefully return!

A beautiful hotel set in lovely gardens right by a golf course. Excellent service and really nice professional staff. A lot of personal attention to detail. Extremely comfortable rooms with spacious marble bathrooms. Great quality linens and towels too.

A lovely hotel and lovely staff. Beautifully situated in the middle of the golf course and gardens. We could not have been made to feel more welcome. We have stayed before, and will definitely stay again.
