Excellent stay, charming hotel steeped in history, comfortable and quiet in a lush setting, location with a view next to the botanical garden and the church of Monte. Pleasant welcome, spacious rooms with balconies, complete and quite good breakfast but which could still be improved, shame about the ineffective wifi. Very steep road to get there.

Sehr schön in einer Gartenanlage gelegenes Haus im Retroambiente, eigentlich Ideal zum Abschalten. Großes Zimmer, sauber, alles da, was man braucht. Mit Parkplätzen könnte es bei voller Belegung eng werden. Zufahrt könnte besser ausgeschildert sein. Fussläufig zur Sailbahnstation. Frühstück ok, Personal sehr freundlich. Keine Einkaufsmöglichkeiten in der Nähe. Alles in allem gab es hier nichts zu meckern. Mich wundern die negativen Kommentare. Ach ja, die Liste mit den Hausregeln: Zum einen kann man fast schon lachen, zum anderen wird es Gründe geben, so etwas auszulegen. Unglaublich, was sich Gäste manchmal herausnehmen ...

The hotel and gardens are beautiful. I went alone for 3 months and was a little nervous at first but the staff are so friendly and helpful and treated me like family when I was unwell they came to check on me and bought me soup and lemon and honey tea. The hotel is beautifully furnished, clean and full of antiques and lovely flower arrangements created by Dora and my room had a balcony with a fabulous view looking down to Funchal. The food was superb with silver service in the restaurant. The 2 waiters Alberto and Eduardo were so attentive professional and friendly with everyone. I have never stayed anywhere like this before and I highly recommend it.

Hotel is beautifully situated in fine grounds, with views of Funchal and the sea from every room. Comfortable room with a small terrace; bathroom rather old-fashioned with a weak shower. Lots of antique furniture and beautiful flower arrangements; however, the public rooms feel a bit barn-like and can't be described as cosy. We were unlucky, with a tropical storm hitting the island during our stay: the hotel felt cold and the heating/air con system was being refitted, so wasn't working. However, they did provide us with a plug in heater, which helped. Monte is colder than Funchal, generally. Overall, it was a nice stay, though, and If it was possible to give a 4.5 rating, I would do so!
