(This review is subject to the caveat that we stayed only one night, so didn’t get to check out all the facilities.) Starting on a positive, the food was fantastic - really fresh, delicious Sri Lankan food, and even a perfectly cooked chocolate fondant. Breakfast was really fulsome and varied, with fresh fruits, good coffee, and great croissants and main dishes. Unfortunately, the room didn’t really live up to this standard and was pretty shabby. The sheets, towels and bathroom all appeared to be clean, but there were stains on almost all furniture and on the walls, as well as bugs in the mosquito nets. The bathroom floor had a big muddy bootprint too. The bedding was basic and the mattress was lumpy. It all seems to need a refresh to feel 5*. Some features also just aren’t fit for purpose: the safe was not attached to anything so could be lifted and removed. The mosquito nets have gaps in so that they can fit round the four poster legs, which rather defeats the object (although we didn’t see many bugs in the room luckily). Less critically, the shower is weak and there is no handset (only an overhead), and the WiFi is slow and patchy in coverage. The location and building, along with the fab food, mean that this hotel could be really special, but it’s not living up to its potential at the moment.
