Sunway Hotel Georgetown Penang

The hotel lobby is spacious, and they have a gym and afternoon tea. When I checked in, the front desk gave me two incredibly fragrant cookies. Right outside the hotel is a night market street. That old man selling粿条 (kway teow) is super popular; there's a long line, but the taste is pretty good.

The decor is a bit run down and the facilities are a bit old, but it's very clean and the location is great – close to everything yet still relatively quiet. There are also plenty of dining options nearby, and the price is very affordable, making it excellent value for money.

The hotel is a bit old, but I actually found the bed quite comfortable, unlike some reviews that mentioned sagging. It's in a great location for exploring; just a short walk around the corner and you'll find the colorful shophouses and plenty of local snacks. You'll need to grab a ride to get to Mural Street and the Peranakan Museum. Breakfast was a bit weak; you have to cook your own noodles, and when I went at 9:30 AM, they said they had run out of eggs, which the hotel definitely needs to improve on. Other services were pretty good though.

The hotel's location is great, within walking distance to Penang's main tourist attractions. However, the hotel is a bit old, and the facilities look a bit dated, especially the carpet, which has an old, musty smell, kind of like an old chain hotel back home. Also, on our last day, which happened to be Chinese New Year's Day, the hotel was packed with guests, but the food supply was insufficient. Most of it ran out later and wasn't replenished much. There seemed to be fewer staff members too. Most of the guests were Chinese, and since it was Chinese New Year, everyone just grabbed a quick bite, and it seemed like no one complained on the spot. But I think the hotel shouldn't have done that; knowing there would be so many guests, they should have been much better prepared.
