Overall Impression: This isn't just a hotel; it's a livable 'antique museum.' The moment you step into Jingguan Minglou in Guilin, your first instinct is to "speak in hushed tones." The lobby is filled with antiques the owner has collected from various places – Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, wood carvings, old stone stools, calligraphy, and porcelain. The air carries a blend of aged wood, old books, and a faint tea fragrance. This isn't a retro design; it's the owner transforming decades of his collection directly into a hotel. Many foreign guests have written in their reviews, "The moment I opened the door, I felt like I'd stepped into the history of Oriental art." Location: Hidden in a century-old house by Ronghu Lake. Jingguan Minglou is located on Ronghu South Road, right by the Ronghu section of the Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area. Turn left out of the door to find Gu Nanmen (Ancient South Gate), and a few minutes' walk to the right leads to the Sun and Moon Pagodas. This area is the essence of old Guilin, but the hotel is tucked away – its facade is unassuming, like an ordinary Lingnan old house, with a low-key plaque. It's easy to miss without navigation, but precisely this 'hidden' quality completely sets it apart from the noisy hotels on the pedestrian streets. Many online reviews mention how pleasant it is to stroll by Ronghu Lake in the morning and evening – watching elderly people practice tai chi in the morning, and the reflections of distant mountains on the lake at dusk. This sense of everyday life is the most captivating part of old Guilin. Unlike the 'international backpacker hub' in Yangshuo, the foreign guests at Jingguan Minglou in Guilin are typically older, with a higher cultural background, many being university professors, artists, and researchers of Chinese culture. Their reasons for coming are quite focused: Firstly, the owner's unique identity. The owner is a seasoned collector and tea connoisseur, with deep knowledge of antiques, calligraphy, and tea ceremony. He can explain to foreign guests, in English, the age, origin, and craftsmanship of a piece of furniture, even extending to the history behind it. This 'owner-led tour' experience is more precious than any paid tour guide. A French guest wrote in a review, "He is not a hotel manager; he is a storyteller of Chinese culture." Secondly, the tea ceremony experience. The tea room on the ground floor is the heart of the entire building. Every evening, if the owner is present, he invites guests to sit down and drink tea. From rock teas to pu-erh, Longjing to Dancong, he selects teas based on guests' preferences, brewing and telling stories about the tea. Many foreigners' entire understanding of Chinese tea begins here. They frequently mention 'tea session' in their reviews, calling it a highlight of their entire China trip. Thirdly, niche high-end recommendations. Jingguan Minglou is not on the lists of mass tourist groups, but it is featured in some boutique hotel websites targeting Europeans and Americans, cultural travel blogs, and high-end travel guides as a 'must-stay small cultural heritage hotel in China.' Most guests who come here have done their research and specifically sought it out. The advantages are very prominent: all the furniture consists of antique pieces, each worth a closer look; the warmth brought by the wooden structure is something modern hotels cannot offer; you can see the lake when you open the window and enjoy quiet when you close it, lying in the room and hearing the faint sounds of the distant city, like living in Guilin's old times. Breakfast and Details Breakfast is a set Chinese meal: congee, side dishes, steamed buns, eggs, and fruit – simple but comforting. Tea and coffee are also available. Enjoying a bowl of hot congee at an old wooden table in the small lakeside hall offers a deeply authentic and charming morning experience. The common areas feature many details: original English books, the owner's self-written tea ceremony booklets, and some old photos about Guilin's history. There's also a thick guestbook, filled with entries in various languages, some with drawings, others with long poems. If you treat this place like staying at a collector friend's home, you'll be reluctant to leave.

American travelers. Fantastic location facing the two lakes. The reception desk staff speak English and helped book excursions to the rice terraces and to Yangshuo. The hotel itself is something to behold from the inside: it's like staying at a museum. Be sure to have breakfast at the hotel - the breakfast room is out of this world, beautiful, stylish, with a fantastic view. Very close to the hotel there is a bakery and a mixue shop for ice cream and bubble tea. The area is supremely walkable 24/7. East-west alley (night snack markets) and the riverbank with locals is a short walk away. You will feel the hospitality of Guilin here. During our stay we saw out-of-town chinese people staying at the hotel, it's not a westerner hotel per se.

The staff were friendly, spoke good English, and were very helpful in arranging our excursions to the rice terraces and the cruise to Yangshuo. Booking the room was a little more complicated. The hotel cancelled our reservation the day before our scheduled arrival, and we had to go back and forth with Trip.com before we were eventually able to secure another room.

The hotel has a great location and has a very special design. It is a small, charming place with very nice and helpful, English speaking staff. You can book your tours to different scenic spots around Guilin with them. We booked a private tour to Yangshuo as well as Longshen to see the carst mountains and rice terraces, respectively. Our driver was nice and friendly and thanks to translation apps communication was not a problem. The hotel was calm and clean (we got new towels everyday, which for us is not necessary and they might want to consider reducing this. We personally do not need our room cleaned everyday. So, a Do Not Disturb sign would be nice to have.) The breakfast room is at the top floor (5th) and you have a nice view from here. The breakfast itself provides you with western (toast, cakes, waffles) and some Chinese options. It is ok, but nothing special. Overall, we highly recommend it and would stay here again.

Aroma Tea House is the hidden gem in Guilin. Located in a quiet spot in a city next to a scenic lake, the hotel is an artistic experience having been previously a museum. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They went the extra mile in providing us assistance with directions, our tours and special requests, even arranging an early breakfast so we could make it to the Li River Cruise on time. Highly recommended.
