Location is fair - good view of Mt Fuji in the distance on a clear day. Good T line bus access just at the base of the hotel (walk about 30m up a slight incline driveway). Rooms are smoking and very dated but lovely nostalgic feel of the hotel. Quite incredible decor of the shared areas, very orginal. The hotel has a restaurant for dinner but booking this was difficult and unable to book for same day, there are no food options close to hotel so be prepared.
Breakfast was well organised and large offering of foods, you must pick a time slot on checking in (7.30-8.30 or 8.40-9.30).
T line bus was easy from Gora station (bus stop 3 at Gora). Easy bus to ropeway and cable cars.
No USB charging ports or any modern amenity, is very dated and quite stained etc.

This is a Showa-era style ryokan. There's a bus stop right outside, but no shops nearby. Unless you book meals at the hotel in advance, you'll need to travel a few stops to find food. Breakfast was decent. However, the facilities are old and not very well-maintained, especially the hot springs, which weren't clean at all and quite dirty.

A nice but dated hotel
So this is a recommendation. This hotel sits about mid way on the mountain and a ten minute walk down the road will put you at the rope way to Owadaunuki and the Aishi Cruise Boat.
The Room was large and clean, the fuji view is a scam, the trees are way to high as you see from my pictures so dont pay extra for that.
There are four private onsens which was a nice bonus you just have to bear in mind that this is an older hotel but pleasant and calm.
One side note is dinner is not bookable for the day you arrive and nothing in the immediate area is open after 16:00
So if your arriving late, make sure your buy some drinks and food before your train otherwise you will be surviving the night on some overpriced popcorn and bottled water like me.
Lastly there is a bus stop just across the road which goes to Odawara station for about 1300 yen and was very reliable.

Room is clean but is kinda old school hotel everything is analog. Main issue is the lack of power points around the room. No shampoo and body wash in the room as well, available at the onsen area. No free bottled water in room. Onsen is great. Supports baggage delivery service to Hakone-Yumoto station. Location is alright if you have a Hakone free pass, 4 away from Togendai station. Entrance to hotel is pretty. Might be able to see Mt Fuji on a good day.

This hotel was a bit aged but well maintained. They have both public and private bath for the guest to use. Some facilities is not very convenient but still usable.

Located near two bus stops, easy access to public transportation makes Hotel Kagetsuen a convenient place to stay. It seems well-managed, with amenities provided as promised, and facilities that are clean and working. The room we got was comfortable and relatively spacious. Their buffet breakfast was good, and the view during autumn (see photo) was quite stunning and formed part of the memories that made our stay at Kagetsuen truly outstanding. We can’t recommend Hotel Kagetsuen enough and would opt to stay there again on our next visit to Hakone.

Good location about 10 min walk away from Togendai station. Room was basic but comfortable enough to have a good rest. Free snacks were provided in the room.
Private onsen was spacious and great for relaxing and showering, though only 4 private rooms are available and there may be a queue.
Buffet breakfast tasted great, with a variety of both Japanese and western dishes to choose from.

If you only want to visit the sights outside Hakone (such as the shrine, Owakudani, and Hakone Motokan), this hotel is a good choice. It's about a 10-minute walk up and down from Toendai Station (the most convenient location in the Hakone suburbs). You don't have to wait for the 20-30 minute bus. The public onsen is a kind of bathhouse, so it's rarely crowded. There's free table tennis and mahjong inside the hotel. Only the karaoke costs money. The large number of people makes it a great way to spend your evenings in Hakone. Although it says there's no room service, there's maid service. Luggage can be delivered to Hakone Yumoto, and there's luggage storage. The service is excellent. However, be aware that breakfast is only available by reservation, not walk-in. Dinner usually ends before 7:00 PM, and after that, you can only buy rice and noodles in the lobby. The microwave (BF1) is located one floor below the lobby (1F), which is quite far from the rooms (1-4). The WiFi is weak and unstable, so you may need to use your own data.

This hotel is a bit old, and the facilities are a bit dated. The most annoying thing is that there's only one two-hole socket in the room, so if two people are staying, they have to take turns charging their phones, which is very inconvenient. The location is okay; get off at the Nanwenquanzhuang bus stop and it's only a 3-minute walk to the hotel. The hot springs are just okay, and the women's public bathhouse only has two small pools.

The bathhouse is good. The hotel is old. I don't have any special requirements. The scenery is good and the sleep is good.
