Lots of good, one bad for me that really impacted the score.
Rooms are recently refurbished, large spacious and well equipped. USB-C sockets everywhere, along with all the expected toiletries that most other hotels stopped providing a while back - vanity kit, hair bands, sewing kit, razor, etc. etc.
Beds are hard and pillows too soft but this is normal for Japan.
What really killed it for me was an unknown, unwritten surcharge for use of the onsen (public bath), swimming pool and gym. Not only was this an additional 1650yen per person, but this is a per-day fee and the same for a child irrespective of age. To top it off the swimming pool was out of action due to maintenance all 4 nights we stayed, and the onsen itself holds 4 only and has a single hot bath and has yet to be refurbished to any kind of standard equivalent to the rooms.
This soured the entire experience adding an additional 3300x4 fee to our stay. I wouldn't normally pay but this was a trip I'd promised my son for some time and he adores onsen. So how could I let him down?
