"The hotel where I lived in the United States for more than ten days was basically dissatisfied. When I arrived at Houston, I could easily play with my son for two days. I chose the hotel for a long time. I was very satisfied, the service was good, and the location was great!"

Houston Vacation Travel Guide: Transportation, Activities & Best Hotels

houston skyline

Lying near the Gulf of Mexico, Houston is the most populous city in Texas and one of the largest cities in the U.S. Founded in 1836, it has always been a crucial gateway to the Far West, serving as a key transit point and the heart of cowboy heritage.

Nowadays, it gradually becomes a vivid combination of fine arts and the great Space Center. It’s a fabulous metropolis that remains refreshingly down to Earth for travelers. Here’s what you ought to know about Houston before you go!

Getting to & around Houston

Typically, you just have to fly into George Bush International Airport (IAH) or Willian P. Hobby Airport (HOU) from other cities in the U.S. You can also get to Houston city by car (highways like I-10, 1-45, and I-69), by bus (like Greyhound and FlixBus), or by train (like Amtrak’s Sunset Limited or Texas Eagle routes).

Don’t worry if you arrive late! Let’s see the several most booked hotels near IAH airport in case you have no idea about where to stay around.

Hotel Name Location (Distance from IAH Airport) Services
Houston Airport Marriott0.72km from IAHFree airport shuttle pick-up and drop-off, outdoor swimming pool, spa, gym, 24-hour front desk, luggage storage, bar, restaurant, car rentals, wake-up call, Wi-Fi in public areas
Double Tree Hotel5.24km from IAH Cafe and bar, taxi-booking, free shuttle services, luggage storage, swimming pool, restaurant, free public parking, Wi-Fi in public area

It’s quite convenient to get around Houston by its metro rail to get to its downtown or midtown at a reasonable price ($3 for a day pass via the Metro Q app). Other transit forms of buses, taxis, and ride shares, are widely available as well~

Where to Stay in Houston

  • Downtown Houston: Skyscrapers & nightlife. Heart of the city, fun with bars and clubs. Do not miss out on catching a game at Astros and Rockets, shop at the Galleria, and ride the metro rail here!
  • Houston Museum District: Filled with cultural atmosphere and green spaces. Walk around and find Herman Park, Houston Zoo, and the Museum of Fine Arts, each for different joys.
  • The Monstrose Area: Vintage vibes, artsy, & LGBTQ+. Street art, chill café, stores. Grab your friends or partners there to fully enjoy the day here. A laid-back afternoon walk is recommended. Don't miss: the nearby Menil Collection!

What to Do in Houston

nasa space center houston

Houston is full of possibilities for travelers that come to visit. Take your time and explore what really hits you and lighters your bucket lists.

  • Catch a Broadway Show in the Theater District: Performing arts, world-class music, opera. Find a decent place for dinner at nearby spots like The Grove, Flying Saucer, and Xochi. The Lancaster Hotel is one of the best hotels nearby!🥰
  • Try Authentic Texas Food: BBQ, Tex-Mex, Southern, and more! You can find extremely genius cuisine across the city: downtown, midtown, the Heights, East End, etc.

GGuest UserI recently had the pleasure of staying at a youth hostel that truly stood out for its exceptional qualities. Nestled in a residential area, its location was incredibly convenient, offering a tranquil retreat just a bike ride away from the city center—less than 10 minutes to be exact. This made for peaceful nights, ensuring a restful sleep in a safe environment. The hostel is run by a delightful couple whose hospitality knew no bounds. They were not only eager to assist with any issues that arose but also went above and beyond by providing bicycles. This thoughtful touch significantly enhanced my mobility around Houston, allowing me to reach various destinations swiftly. What set this hostel apart was the attention to detail and the array of complimentary amenities, including cookies, milk, cereal, coffee, and tea. The cleanliness and smart technology throughout the house contributed to a seamless stay, making it the best hostel experience I've ever had. The bathroom towels folded into swan shapes were a testament to the owners' dedication to detail, adding a touch of elegance and care. The warmth of the place was akin to being at home, with the owners always ready for a chat, eager to answer questions, and share their stories and experiences. A highlight for me was the world map on the living room wall, where guests could pin their home countries—a fun and interactive way to connect with fellow travelers. In summary, this hostel was more than just a place to stay; it felt like a home, or perhaps more accurately, a homestay. It's undoubtedly the best hostel I've ever stayed in globally, blending the comfort of a home with the adventurous spirit of a hostel.

刘白子_lssGreat Service, Lovely Breakfast — but Room Noise and In-Room Dining Could Improve I recently stayed at the Thompson Houston and overall had a great experience, especially thanks to the excellent service. Every staff member I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and professional. Their attention to detail really made me feel welcomed, and I was touched when they surprised me with a graduation cake — a thoughtful gesture I truly appreciated. The hotel breakfast was a highlight. The food was fresh and well-prepared, and once again, the service stood out. Dining in the morning felt like a treat thanks to the welcoming atmosphere. That said, there were a few downsides that affected my stay. The room was quite noisy, even late into the night. It was hard to relax or fall asleep with the amount of outside noise coming through. Also, I ordered in-room dining on two occasions. On the first day, everything was great. However, the next day the fries were noticeably soggier, the salad was just a bowl of greens with six tiny avocado cubes, and — most concerning — the aioli on the side looked like it had already been used. Overall, Thompson Houston left a positive impression on me, mostly due to its exceptional staff and quality breakfast. I hope they can improve the soundproofing and ensure consistency in their in-room dining service.

EEbenezerWe stayed at Home2Suite during our last trip to Houston but it was the one at Pearland. We arrived at this one late in the night and the staff at the front desk was very friendly. However once we entered the lift, we were welcomed with a strong greasy smell. The hall way had rug that was clean but obviously old. The major concern was the room which had a hole in the ceiling inside the toilet dripping water all over the floor. The AC also wasn’t working well that even at 19 degrees Celsius, was still warm. Initial complain to the staff was met with no vacant room, that they were fully booked. We managed for the first three days because we were outdoors most of the time. The room was later changed to a more comfortable one. The other thing was the swimming pool. My kids really wanted to swim during our stay but the staff mentioned that some handle to the pool was broken and that it was closed. The breakfast was also good but with little varieties to choose from.

KKingHuckI recently stayed at this hotel and overall had a pleasant experience. The location was convenient, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the room was clean and comfortable. However, I was a bit disappointed with the amenities, particularly the weight room. The weight room was small and outdated, with limited equipment and not well-maintained. As someone who enjoys working out during my travels, I found the lack of quality fitness facilities to be a downside. Despite this, I still enjoyed my stay at the hotel due to its other positive attributes. The on-site restaurant served delicious food, the complimentary breakfast was a nice touch, and the room service was prompt and efficient. If the hotel could invest in upgrading their weight room and fitness facilities, it would greatly enhance the overall guest experience. I would consider staying here again in the future, but hope to see improvements in this area.”

GGuest User1. *DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel & Suites Houston at the Galleria IS THE FIRST HILTON-MANAGED HOTEL I'm STAYING IN WITH SUCH UNHOSPITABLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL FRONT OFFICE STAFF. 2. The front office staff, unfortunately, are a new guest’s first contact but they lack professionalism and decorum. First impressions last forever, they say. 3. They don’t wear name tags at the front office (except Pinky Pradhan), so they carry on providing sub-standard services in anonymity. 4. THE RESTAURANT STAFF ARE ALL SO CORDIAL & SO NICE. 5. The food was excellent. 6. The facilities are super (gym and pool) except that the lifts are so slow and were perpetually being fixed for the seven nights I stayed there. 7. Only one electric power outlet (charging point) in the King size room, which was far from the work desk. So, laptop use was not fun. I was on a business trip, not on holiday 8. I was told that a guest has to be Hilton Honors DIAMOND to qualify to have a bottle of water in your room...amazing! I chose the hotel because of its proximity to JW Marriott, venue of my training, so I could do a few minutes' walk to and fro. I wish I stayed at the Marriott. I may not recommend DoubleTree by Hilton Houston at the Galleria to any one I care about.

FFeiyanzoubiFacilities: It is an older hotel, but the hotel building is very large, so it should be used for meetings or events. Hygiene: OK, clean and tidy. Environment: There is a back garden, and the atmosphere and environment of the restaurant are good. Service: OK, but you need some patience. The hotel delayed the breakfast confirmation for a long time at first, but it was finally resolved.

GGuest User Upon check in, we went to our room only to find out the key card/lock would not work. The concierge was very helpful and said he'd send the engineer up to assist. We waited about 10 minutes, but I understand the engineer was very busy assisting with other patrons' key card/lock issues. So we had to leave the hotel for dinner and come back. The concierge said he would have the engineer test the card/lock to ensure we would be able to get into our room later that evening. Upon our return to the hotel room, we still could not get in. We contacted the night concierge, and she called the engineer. We waited another 15 minutes for him to show up. At that point, he troubleshot the issue and could not get into the room. He said he would need other tools to get us in. So we waited another 10 minutes in the hot and muggy hallway for him to come back with crowbars. He was finally able to get us in; this was after about 30 minutes total of waiting in the hot hallway. Now I do not blame the engineer or concierges; they were just doing their jobs to the best of their abilities. But a very nice hotel like yours should have a better fail safe system in place than crowbars. Kind of scary that someone could pry open a room with a small crowbar or two.
