I booked this hostel during a random weekend when I decided to spend a night in Kuala Lumpur. I did not have a particular reason to stay, but the price was affordable and the location looked practical, so it seemed like a reasonable choice.
The entrance to this hostel requires climbing a flight of stairs before reaching the reception area. I checked in around 5pm. There was a damp + old smell around the staircase area at the time, and the next morning there was also a kitchen smell drifting up from the restaurants located downstairs.
The Indian lady at reception, who was wearing glasses, was extremely friendly and helpful during the check in process. She made a good first impression. On the other hand, there was a Malaysian Chinese guy sitting nearby at the dining table who appeared quite unfriendly and kept looking at me with a rather cold expression, which made the moment slightly awkward.
I had booked a 10 person dorm and was assigned an upper bunk, Bed #3 in Room Taiping on the second floor. Most of the occupants seemed to be long term residents rather than travellers. Apart from me, only one other person appeared to be visiting temporarily.
My bed was positioned near the door and quite far from the air conditioner, so the room felt very warm and no ventilation. During the night I woke up around 1am due to loud motorbike groups passing outside. Then, when I stepped out to the washroom, I noticed some people still awake in the dark using their phones and made small laughs, watching videos, and one person watching adult content openly and doing an indecent act. Luckily all the people in that dorm were guys.
Sleep was a bit difficult after that and I only managed to fall asleep around 3am. Later at about 5am, some people returned, possibly from work, which woke me again. The room also had a strong smell from socks and body odour.
The bathroom itself was acceptable, though not particularly clean. I hope they can install a small shelf inside the bathroom so it would help guests place personal items while showering, like I always carry my wallet, phone and smart watch even though I shower. The stairway near the dorm area also carried a cigarette smell, which was inconvenient for me as a non-smoker.
The strongest advantage of the hostel is definitely the location. It is less than five minutes’ walk from Pasar Seni Station, with many cafés and eateries around. The area also feels less crowded than Petaling Street. Overall the stay was just okay, mainly worthwhile for its convenience rather than comfort.
