I stayed in a Japanese-Western style room in the main building for two nights and one night, with two meals included.
The front desk was spacious, quiet, and had a pleasant atmosphere. The staff were courteous and helpful.
There were two elevators, which I think was sufficient given the number of rooms, but they rarely arrived, suggesting they were older.
The room was generally clean. The bath, toilet, and sink unit baths were all equipped with hot spring water, so even if you can't access the large communal bath, you can still enjoy hot water. The TVs were small for the size of the room and couldn't be easily rotated, so I had to move each one individually. Moving them released dust, which made me wonder if I should have. The view from the room, overlooking the cityscape and the Aso mountain range in the distance, wasn't spectacular, but it was nice.
Dinner, which I believe was a kaiseki meal, was served quickly, and the food seemed to rush us along with it, so it was over in less than an hour. I would have liked to have more time to enjoy the food and chat. It's a shame, as the food itself was delicious. The foreign waitresses were also hard at work.
The large public bath was an indoor rock bath with rocks placed inside, and there was a 90°C sauna. Since there weren't many other bathers, I was able to enjoy a very relaxing soak. The water and spring quality were nothing special, so I think it would be enjoyable for everyone.
Breakfast was a buffet, but they had both Japanese and Western dishes to choose from, which was nice. The Japanese food was relatively more varied and perhaps better, but nothing particularly outstanding. Still, it was delicious.
Finally, the parking. There's a spa called Aganasse next to the hotel, but I'd like them to reserve a sufficient number of parking spaces for hotel guests closer to the hotel. While you can drop off your luggage in front of the entrance, the hotel doesn't store it for you, so it can be inconvenient if the parking is quite far away.
Overall, I think this was a relatively nice hotel where you could relax.
