The Notary's House

The Notary's House is a colonial boutique hotel around 45 minutes from the airport and around 30 minutes from the coastal town of Negombo. The staff were extremely attentive and made sure our stay was a relaxing one. The food was excellent and our room was fabulous. There is a small Buddhist temple a short walk away that is definitely worth a visit. We walked to the temple but were caught in a monsoon downpour when we arrived there. The hotel manager realised that we were there and sent the hotels tuk tuk to rescue us! All in all, this was a really lovely place to stay before we departed for home.

This lovely small boutique hotel is set in beautiful gardens with coconut trees and bordering a lake. We were staying there for one night after a long flight to Colombo from the UK. We were the only guests staying there at the time and were exceptionally well looked after. After a warm welcome and room allocation, we took a short amble around the hotel grounds and were given a tour of the vegetable garden, the produce of which is used in the food preparation. We then relaxed with a drink in the garden overlooking the lake and watched the birds and bats as the sun began to set. Later, on the terrace, with the delicate scent of incense keeping the insects at bay, we ate a delicious dinner of Sri Lankan chicken biryani followed by a typical local dessert (again delicious). The following morning after a good night’s sleep, we ate breakfast on the terrace before setting off for the next stop of our tour. We were given a small informative book about Kandy as a gift on departure which was a lovely touch. We had a very peaceful and pleasant experience here and would not hesitate to return.

The welcome and service was exceptional. The Notary’s House is the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate after a long flight and start your Sri Lankan journey. They arranged transport from the airport and onto my next stop too, making this hotel a really easy choice. The food was the best I’ve ever eaten, there is no ‘menu’ so each meal was curated just for me. I also highly recommend taking the free bicycle tour around the local area, that was a real highlight of my trip.

The notary's house is a beautiful boutique hotel with spacious rooms & grounds. The hotel is approx 45 mins drive from the airport. We had a Sri Lanka curry for dinner, myself & my son suffered upset stomachs though the night of the meal. Not ideal before a long haul flight

Beautiful calm experience in stunning surroundings. Staff catered for every need and a great place to start our Sri Lankan trip. Thoroughly recommend a visit to the Buddhist temple up the road too!

A lovely start to a trip to Sri Lanka - felt like driving into an oasis of calm. Food was delicious, service was excellent (always there but never pushy), and the rooms were spacious and well equipped. The pool was also good fun! Perfect for a night whilst travelling somewhere else, although less of a destination.
