Hotel Tambopaxi

Tombopaxi is the only lodge inside the Cotopaxi national park. We, a family of three, stayed at one of the VIP rooms. Our room had a huge window with direct view of the Cotopaxi. The view is just breathtaking. Every penny is worth. Our room had a fireplace that every single evening would be turn on to keep your room warm during the night. All areas were clean and the mattresses were comfortable. The area where we stayed had 4 observatory areas with huge windows where you can enjoy the beauty of the national park. There was also a coffee station where you can grab a coffee or a tea, while enjoying the view. In the restaurant we had several meals and drinks. All meals and drinks were generous and very tasty. The staff at the lodge were very friendly and polite. We highly recommend to book a horse back riding trip as it is a highlight to be able to reach areas of the Park that you wouldn’t have access to otherwise. The Laguna of limpipungo was also amazing. You can walk around it and enjoy the view of the lake and the different birds that inhabit there. We saw birds, reindeers and wild horses. All in all we were amazed by the beauty of this place and we will definitely stay again at tombopaxi.

Tambopaxi is unique not only because of its location but also because of the service. the price point is perfect. Having travelled across Ecuador, I have never been to a hotel that is so well located if you are looking for a quick getaway

Overall, a pleasant experience but a few things should be noted Pros: we were able to move our reservation without penalty when a family emergency arose which was appreciated. The views are amazing! It’s the only lodging / resto inside the national park and so to wake up with views of Cotopaxi is just pretty darn special. Also the fresh bread (only for breakfast) is delicious and there is wifi in common areas (though can be a bit slow when others are using as well). We were able to book the horseback riding adventure (1 hour) and pay for everything at the end. Also, if you’re a foreigner, you can ask them to take off the IVA at least for the lodging portion. Loved that someone came to start the fire around 5:30-6pm every evening which kept the room nice and cozy. Cons: a bit outdated and found some hairs in the shower drain upon checkin. Towels are a bit sparse and overall, it’s more rustic vibes so if you’re looking for fancy, this is not the place. We stayed in the VIP house which you share with other rooms and so the common areas can get quite loud (already lots of talking at 7am since each room houses 5-8 ppl) so I would consider that if you’re sensitive to noise is to get a room or cabin that is separated from others. Also ask how many ppl are going on your horseback riding tour. We ended up on a tour with 20 other ppl and it wasn’t very peaceful since they were screaming at each other for photo ops and pics and so took away from nature. I’m not a horse person and so can’t attest to the health or welfare of the horses. They seemed ok to me but next time will book a private tour so can enjoy nature and maybe learn more about the park and how to properly ride a horse. Also since it’s inside the park, you MUST get into the park by 4pm and so it limits evening activities if you wanted to have dinner outside or use other services. So just something to note. Overall, the resto seems like a big stop for a lot of tour groups coming in and out of Cotopaxi. You can drive yourself to the parking lot of the Refugio and hike from there. If you’re looking for convenience and want to be inside the park, this is the spot for you. If that’s not important, I would suggest booking at other places just outside the park where they also offer spa packages and a wet/dry bath area to relax after a day in the mountains. Customer service was good though we speak Spanish and so cannot attest to their English speaking abilities.

Water and electricity were shut-off twice during our stay

Loved being in the Cotopaxi National Parque. This place is rustic,comfortable. We had a small wood stove in our room which was lit each night by staff. The dining area serves delicious food for great prices. We had filet mignon for 15$ each. Again, coffee is not great, but it does the job. We took a 2 hour guided horse ride with a local fellow, it was wonderful to go out and see nature. Views of Cotopaxi were spectacular, the weather was great. Staff speaks english well enough to understand each other.

Excellent in every category…

Used the restaurant and really liked it however we also had a ride booked with the horses stables owned by this lodge. It was absolutely horrible and we refused to ride. The horses were in a terrible condition- severely underweight and starving, badly fitting tack, rusty bits, shoes hanging off and the men in charge of them were more interested in showing off than the welfare of the horses. They also had no regard for the weight of the riders and the horses were literally buckling under the weight of riders too heavy for them. It was soul destroying to see and had me in floods of tears…. This place should be closed down on animal welfare grounds- please please don’t ride the horses there until they improve the care and welfare standards- there is absolutely no excuse for it
