Hotel la Luna

We booked a Deluxe Suite at Hotel La Luna, and it turned out to be quite an experience - in the best possible way. The building is old, and it certainly shows its age, but that is also what gives the hotel its unbeatable charm. Our suite had a ceiling height of around five metres, with a beautifully decorated ceiling featuring approximately 500-year-old frescoes. It was certainly not the most modern or luxurious room we have stayed in, but it was by far one of the most atmospheric and memorable. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Lucca’s historic centre. Getting there by car, however, is an adventure in itself. Our GPS quickly became confused by the many narrow one-way streets, and we eventually parked the car and continued on foot. At the hotel, we were told to drive against the traffic and through a pedestrian-only area to reach the hotel garage. The advice was essentially: if stopped by the police, just look like confused and lost tourists. We followed the instructions — and luckily, everything went perfectly! Our car eventually made it safely into the hotel’s small garage. Breakfast was nice and should satisfy most guests, although you can certainly find more extensive breakfast buffets elsewhere. The hotel itself was very clean, and our bathroom had a spa bath, which was a lovely extra. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Hotel La Luna may not be the most modern or fancy hotel we have stayed in, but taking the journey to get there, the historic setting, and our wonderfully atmospheric room into account, this will definitely count as one of our more memorable hotel stays.

Hotel in a great location in Lucca city centre. Rústic hotel but that’s not s bad thing. Bed was comfy, air conditioning worked and breakfast was standard and coffee was really good! If I was to come back to Lucca I would definitely stay here again.

Hotel La Luna – Well Practiced in Scamming! This hotel engages in scamming practices, intimidation, and abusive behavior. First incident: I booked, paid for, and received confirmation of a junior premium suite with balcony. On arrival, I was given a standard double room instead. When I questioned this, management dismissed my concerns with the response: “Look, you have a high ceiling.” Second incident (more serious): The hotel exploits a booking loophole. Unless every guest name is listed in your reservation, they will falsely claim you owe an “extra bed fee” - even if you booked for two adults and two children. They allow you to check in, but later insist you leave your room and car keys at reception when going out. Upon return, you are denied access to both until you pay the sudden, unexpected charge. During this process, the manager was threatening, verbally abusive, and physically intimidating - shouting, throwing objects, storming off and back again. This behavior was unprofessional, offensive, and discriminatory, with several derogatory remarks made in both English and Italian. ⚠️ Final Recommendation: Hotel Lucca is well-practiced in these scams. For your safety, finances, and peace of mind, I strongly advise avoiding this establishment altogether.

Beautiful little hotel, a bit dated but that just added to its charm.

Perfectly good midrange hotel with decent facilities and warm and quiet. Friendly english speaking staff, decent breakfast and 7 mins walk from bus stops to the north and south, both of which connect to the station. Location near amfiteatro so could not be more central. Looks a bit tatty on the outside and is perfectly good on the inside, which is typical of the whole of Italy. Definitely returning.

Sadly we had appalling service from this hotel. We had paid a high price for three rooms then the hotel tried to charge further fees. The held a bags and passports and refused to give our hotel room key. This upset the whole party and ruined our trip to Lucca. The hotel manager was very unprofessional. Stated he did not like the British and was please the Brit were kicked out of Europe. ( shame he did not know the true facts) the manager was very rude and offensive to several members of our party and although we tried to talk calmly to him he would not listen. His father did turn up and it was clear that the previous manager had issues and perhaps should not be in this industry. His father said he was sorry but this was too little too late. However, after being able to get our bags and cars away from the hotel to stay at another local hotel we found ourselves exhausted. We are taking further action as we feel we were being scammed and would not fall for it. But we did pay more for one room which we need to get back through our credit card. Sadly we have now seen that this has happened a few times before. As such, please be warned and stay elsewhere if there is another hotel that is suitable.

I got to my room and no one told me to insert the card to get the lights to work. I might have seen it if it wasn’t dark in the room. The smell of perfume was also extremely overwhelming. The room itself reminds me of a motel 6 room but much smaller and no coffee maker or kettle. The shower is dirty, bed is cheap, fridge smells awful and has grime inside. I would definitely not recommend. When I asked about the lights and the perfume smell, I was just blown off by reception. They did eventually tell me how the lights worked, but told me all the rooms smell like that. And of course I booked a non-refundable for 2 nights because the reviews were so great, so can’t even cancel and book a better place. There are a lot of other hotels in the same price range that seem way nicer.
