Burbi Lake Lodge Monteverde

The space is a true respite with attention to all of the details that make a difference. We loved the property, the views, the lake and getting away to our room with the balcony and no television. The beds were so comfortable and the space clean and welcoming. The breakfast was great too! Such attention to detail and hospitality!

Burbi Lake Lodge is nicely located in a rural area in the Monteverde area, There is no traffic and no night life.... So sound of nature is guaranteed. El Tigre waterfalls is also around the corner - one of our favorite waterfall hikes. Room were spacious and clean. Service was great. Breakfast had loads of choices. The lodge didn't offer dinner, but are giving good recommendations where to go to. Kapi Kapi restaurant, just 10 minutes away was our favorite.

Lovely units on the side of a lake with manicured gardens. There are 4 units per block. Lake view from all of them I believe. Comfy beds, attention to eco-friendly measures such as hot water heating system, ample bathroom. Common room/dining area where breakfast was served and drinks were available at all hours (including wine/beer with an honesty bar). Small trail around the lake. Very local to El Tigre Reserve with its stunning waterfalls. Window blinds let in some light so awoke at dawn. Be aware that access is down an unmade road.

This place just breaths peace and calmness. It is located high up in the cloud forest and has all you need to just relax and enjoy the nature around you. Really close by the lively town so you can also go out for nice dinners. We will be back definitely!

We sadly only stayed for two nights at Burbi but had a wonderful time! A very friendly welcome from Emil the moment we stepped off the bus. The location is stunning, in the cloud forest feeling quite isolated from the hustle and bustle of towns (yes it’s a distance from Santa Elena but it’s not far and it’s worth it for the peace and quiet offered!). The lake with its fish, ducks and visiting wildlife and the surrounding mountains are simply beautiful. We loved how it was bright and sunny in the day and then seeing the clouds roll in through the valley and into the lodge grounds on an evening. The rooms are simple but modern, comfy beds, clean bathroom with a good size shower - we had no issues with getting hot water even with a full hotel all showering at once. We stayed in a ground floor lake view room and loved standing on the little balcony in a morning watching the birds fly around. Breakfast was yummy with a good selection, we especially loved the freshly cooked omelettes! It wasn’t an issue that there’s no other food served as the town is close by, or the hotel said we could use their crockery if we wanted to order takeaway. There was a microwave and hot water available for ready meals / noodles. We had a slight delay in leaving and really appreciated the friendliness and hospitality of the managers who let us sit out on the sun terrace enjoying the views, and kept us going with delicious banana bread and hot drinks. This was so kind! Absolutely would stay here again if I’m ever lucky enough to be at Monteverde!

Monteverde should be on everyone's itinerary visiting Costa Rica, and of you do visit, Burbi is a great accommodation in the area. It's situated in a more quiet area, but still close to shops and restaurants, the people there are very friendly and helpful and their breakfast is delicious. Highly recommended!

Wonderful place with very modern rooms and a spectacular view. Very helpful hosts and fantastic breakfast; especially the Burbi eggs. We really enjoyed the hanging bridges and the zip lining. The lodge is approximately 5 km away from the town. The roads are a real challenge. ;-)

I’m sure this is a beautiful place with nice rooms, but unfortunately we were turned away at reception despite our paid reservation, due to my wife’s service animal. The reception was highly insensitive and disrespectful about the situation given it was close to sunset (it is a bit further removed from Santa Elena on a mostly unpaved road so took longer than expected), and we would have to find another hotel in the high season. The focus of the hotel was on their pet policy, with no understanding or respect for the fact it was a trained service animal. Our suggestions such as a deposit were not accepted and we felt very badly treated generally, as they let us wait while they were “considering” but after 30 minutes (and other guests helped) we received the same answer. We left as this had a highly stressful impact, and even after everything this episode would have been acceptable if it wasn’t for the fact that this hotel does not want to give us back our payment, while we didn’t spend the night. No respect, no decency and a very humiliating experience that I do not wish to anyone. As I just received an email from the hotel to “share my experience after my stay with them” I am duly obliging.

I will give 10/10 to the cloud forest experience at Burbi Lake Lodge but other aspects around property were fairly average or below average. 1. As soon as we checked-in, i was asked to pay an additional $50 x 3 nights for my 15 year old son. Even though I had mentioned this during the reservation process with *******. Apparently the property owner has this discretion since accommodation is based on 2 adults. This is fine print info which ******* and the property owner will not disclose or cover in the rate displayed on the website. So just beware for last minute surprise. 2. The property is basic with no TV or coffee machine in the room. Even the quality of rooms are not plush enough to charge almost $300 per night 3. If you like to walk and hike in the neighboring country roads, again beware of stray dogs. They literally come from no where so just be watchful of small kids who may like to play around the property. 4. The roads immediately outside the property were terrible up to 10-15 miles in either direction. Navigating a foot deep potholes could slow you down to 5 miles in 30-40 mins. Therefore the downtown Monteverde will not be as close as it seems. 5. The property has a common area which serves breakfast and coffee ONLY. There is no functional restaurant here. please please do brush up your spanish because the staff does not speak any english at all (expect for the guy who is at the reception). In short better to stay in Monteverde closer to downtown!!
