The quality of the hot spring is gentle on the body, makes the skin smooth, and there is even a corner where you can drink the hot water. The open-air bath is on a rotation system, so you can enjoy it. Dinner and breakfast were also satisfactory, and since check-out is at 11:00, I was able to enjoy a leisurely walk.

It was a Japanese-style inn with a warm atmosphere.

After changing the room, the room is particularly spacious, bright, comfortable and warm. The room faces the river, and the sound of gurgling water can relieve stress. The location of the hotel recommends driving. All guests in the hotel are required to leave their outdoor shoes in the locker in front of the hotel lobby, which makes the hotel look very clean.

We had a wonderful stay! We especially liked the location - walking distance to small downtown Shima, yet far enough to have less tourists walking around. The hot springs were great, food was delicious (especially if you want to try authentic local Gunma prefecture cuisine - might not be best for children), and the nightly traditional paper story telling was also great. We took a train + bus ride from Tokyo and the local bus (40min ride) from Nakanojyo station stops right in front of the hotel. We will come back again for sure!

I had to wait for a while because I couldn't get my name right away when I left the car or at the reception. It was because the name was reversed and alphabetical. I became very anxious. Is it like this everywhere? I was able to spend a relaxing time at Shima Yamaguchikan, the bath was comfortable, and the meals were moderate, so I wanted to go again.

Nice location along the river, the onsen offered peaceful setting, enjoyed our evening stroll through the community. Meals were good and plentiful. It was a nice property but not stuffy or over the top luxurious. Staff were excellent and helpful. The room had a very nice layout with lots of room, nice sitting area, nice balcony overlooking the river. An evening walk up the valley to visit the rest of the onsen town is a must, especially for Miyazaki fans. Everyone should experience a ryokan stay. It did not appear that they cater to overseas visitors which was great for felling like you were getting an authentic experience. The customs and rituals that go with a ryokan stay are not intuitive for an overseas traveler, but really should not be missed. It is one of the top experiences when in Japan. We are glad our son was along to explain things to us, it took a lot of the worry out of our stay.

There were very few employees and I didn't feel like I was being served. Also, there were places where the eaves and walls were dirty, which bothered me.

The view of the Shima River is the best. The view from the lobby, the room, the open-air bath, everywhere is the best. Especially the view from the open-air bath is the best. Listening to the sound of the river while looking at it is very soothing. The hot springs are moist and you can relax. The food was very good in both quality and quantity, and I was very satisfied. It is a quiet inn and is ideal for those who want to relax.

I stayed with my family twice in January 2022, after the New Year and in late January. Both rooms were on the 7th floor. The first time was a corner room, and if you looked down from the veranda, you could see the flow of the Shima River. The second time was not a corner room, but a family of three could relax in a Japanese-style room of 10 and a half tatami mats. Both arrived earlier than the check-in time, but the check-in was smooth, and the explanation from the front desk staff was polite, and it was easy to understand with memos such as meal time and bath time. Thanks to that, I was able to enjoy the open-air bath early. The open-air bath had shampoo conditioner, body soap, and soap. A razor, aftershave lotion, hair tonic, hair liquid, comb, cotton swabs, and tissues are provided at the open-air bath washbasin. It seems that there was also a cleansing for women. There was a place where you can drink the hot springs on the first floor. A paper cup is provided. Two elevators. One was the observation elevator. There were heaters and rubbing alcohol throughout the ryokan. Wifi was available everywhere in the room and inside the hotel, so I didn't have any problems during my stay. It was fast enough. By the way, the price of juice etc. in the vending machine in the inn was the same as the price outside. I was impressed that there was also a vending machine for cup noodles. Tea and sweets were placed in the room, and there was hot water in the electric kettle and cold water in the refrigerator. The tea was Japanese tea and hojicha, and there were many teapot packs. For dinner, we had a meal in a large hall, but each table was far away, and we were given a bag to put away the mask during the meal. You can enjoy your meal slowly. I was satisfied with the quantity and taste. The catering staff was moving very quickly and it felt good. After dinner, there was a picture-story show by the proprietress. It was about 15 minutes, but seeing the proprietress's heartfelt picture-story show made me feel very nostalgic. There was also an explanation of Shima Onsen. When my son saw the picture-story show for the first time, he became a fan of the proprietress. The second time, after the picture-story show, my son was very happy to have a two-shot with the proprietress. When you return to your room after dinner, the futons are spread out and you can sleep right away. My bed is always my home, so the futon in the Japanese-style room is somewhat fresh. The open-air bath was open to men and women at different times, but it was spacious and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Even after 5:00 in the morning, I went to the open-air bath in the dark and woke up perfectly. Breakfast was also very good. Check-out is at 11:00, so buy souvenirs at the shop before that. If you pay by credit card, it will be smoother if you ask them to charge the room before checking out. When I left the entrance, the staff took out my shoes, everyone greeted me in a loud voice, and I was able to leave comfortably. On the way back, when I took a family photo in front of the entrance, the staff came immediately and took it for me. Shima Onsen wasn't a big tourist spot, but it was a very good place to go to the hot springs with your family.
