DoubleTree by Hilton Long Island City New York

I booked three nights but didn't stay a single one. The hotel is located on a rather dirty street, feeling like a peri-urban area back home. There's a lot of graffiti on the walls on both sides, and quite a bit of trash on the roadside. You can park on the street for free, but there really isn't any available space. No one is in charge either. There are no restaurants nearby. The small restaurant on the hotel's ground floor is relatively expensive. The hotel itself has no parking. There's a private multi-story parking garage next door, but you need a valet to park your car, and it costs $55 a day. Our room in the hotel had a strong, cheap perfume smell, there were a few hairs on the bed, and later we found a bright red pill on the floor by the bed. We called to have hotel staff come look and change our room, but it took a long time to get a response. They said they were eating. Eventually, an employee came, said they didn't know what the pill was, and took it away. Our communication with Trip.com was fruitless. We felt the hotel was so bad that we didn't even consider a refund and just switched hotels directly. Later, Trip.com compensated us for half the room rate. The front desk staff were very unhelpful, both in their attitude and their English. A terrible hotel...

Booked this room through Trip.com again. The location is pretty good, and it's quite convenient for transport. The room was clean and tidy, and the service was excellent. The shampoo, shower gel, and conditioner in the bathroom were all good quality. Overall, a decent stay.

The room was quite small; it was hard to move around the aisle once our luggage was placed. No complimentary bottled water was provided. The towels had a strong kerosene smell, as if they'd been dried over a kerosene flame, which was really unpleasant – good thing I brought my own. The air conditioning was broken. The hotel is about an 11-minute walk from the metro station. It's also quite close to the pier, so there was a loud booming noise until 2 AM, which was very disruptive. The soundproofing is very poor, but the front desk was willing to help us switch to a room away from the noise source, which was a nice gesture.

1. The environment was incredibly noisy, and the surroundings were quite run-down. I'm not sure why Ctrip's rating is so high. The hotel seemed to be mostly occupied by Indian and Chinese guests. 2. There's a construction site to the south, and the machine noise was very loud. 3. On one of the days, our room wasn't cleaned, and when we asked the front desk, they said they forgot.
