We have visited with my wife’s family for years however this is the second consecutive year that I have been disappointed with the Headland hotel and as such we will not be returning. The straw that broke the camels back this year, was a very poor evening meal at the terrace restaurant, the portion sizes were very small for the price and almost everyone’s meal was served cold. My meal of mussels, although tasty were stone cold by the time they reached me. My wife had ordered the fish pie which was advertised as having scollops, prawns and local fish in, it had zero of the first two mentioned and was predominately potato. The staff on shift were very good and the duty manager who dealt with the issue and my angry mother in law was very helpful. Unfortunately things didn’t get much better at breakfast with a 50 minute wait for my daughters pancakes and when my sons bacon sandwich did finally turn up, it arrived as just a couple of bits of bacon, I gave up at this point and went and got bread, butter and ketchup myself and made the sandwich myself. For a hotel of this standard, I as a guest am expecting to be able to get whatever I want/ need. Unfortunately this is the second year I have failed to get a cream tea. Last year it was they had sold out and it was too late in the day. This year I tried ordering whilst at the deck, where you can get tea and cake, but was told it was a specialty of the hotel. Am I not in the hotel? I asked. Yes was the response. But obviously not the right bit. The room was great and the staff tried, but unfortunately I don’t think the Headland should be calling itself a 5 star hotel anymore. Real shame.
