Hotel Gounod

Was upgraded to a suite upon arrival. Very happy that we got an upgrade, because I can only imagine the state of the standard room after seeing the suite. Mold on the ceiling, dirty carpet flooring, holes in the floor under the carpet and worn down walls. Bathroom was okay. Location was great, walking distance for aprox. everything. Furniture is old and wore down, same with curtains etc. I have never stayed in a 3-star hotel in this state, in my opinion this is more of a 2-star. Visited the rooftop at Splendid once, nice view and amenities, but when we ordered there was no information about the fact that the pool and other amenities were at Splendid. On Gonouds website on the other hand, it is clearly stated. Staff was nice. To summarize, it is a very average hotel.

Hotel Gounod is a charming hotel with very friendly staff – especially the receptionist. The hotel is conveniantly located with about 500 metres to the beach, the city centre, and the railway station. It offers good rooms and a substantional breakfast. Pool facilities are available in the neighbouring hotel. In other words, a very good base for a Nice holiday!

I stayed at the hotel, at room 303, for one week along with my girlfriend. We are the silent kind of people, but we want to warn others. It turned out at the photos used in their own marketing, except of one photo of the exterior, are from the Splendid Hotel next door. We are not just talking about their shared facilities, like spa, bar, pool and training room, which are all at Splendid, fair enough. In Gounod Hotel’s presentation of their “standard rooms”, you’ll find the same pictures at the Splendid Hotel websites (as of August 2022). Our room at Gounod Hotel was nothing like it. In our home country, this would be deemed as deceptive marketing, which is a punishable act. We have worked in marketing ourselves. The wear and tear at Hotel Gounod is visible for everyone who wants to see. You see it by the furniture, the wallpaper and even by the paintings on the wall. I didn’t perceive the room as fully clean, but I don’t blame the maids for it. Old carpets, not parquet like in the pictures, are impossible to clean. For my part, the result was a cold cough and runny nose, probably due to house dust mite. There is also visible mold. I have never experienced anything like this in a hotel before. Gounod Hotel should downgrade itself from three to two stars. The hotel management may answer that access to the facilities at the four stars Splendid Hotel is a kind of service unusual to a three star hotel. But honestly, if my buddy next door runs a gourmet restaurant, and I offer samples from his menu to my customers, that wouldn’t make my sausage stand a gourmet restaurant too. Some of the receptionists were friendly and helpful, and thank you for that, while others were, in lack of better words, rude or ignorant. A person who can’t answer a polite question about the opening times of the breakfast (nobody had told us when we arrived in the first place), without putting up a condescending face, shouldn’t work at the front desk. Those receptionists who care for their guests, shouldn’t be dragged down by those who don’t. The breakfast is perhaps OK by continental European standards. Northern Europeans would have expected some more options of cold cuts and spreads, at least. The best things to say about the hotel is the location, a short walk from the beach and from the nearest subway station, and the effective and silent air conditioner. We also had a balcony, which we appreciated as a retreat. Despite these traits, we wouldn’t recommend this hotel. There are plenty of others.

I wrote a review of my experience in this hotel and I note that my review concerning the bad smell of cat urine in our room was not responded to by the manager - he did not respond to my email either. This leaves a very negative impact and very poor customer service .

We stayed there in July and the rooms are very clean. They are furnished in an inviting and comfortable way. Some rooms have an outdoor balcony, which is a wonderful bonus. Access to the pool next door at the Splendid Hotel, with spectacular views, is another bonus. The Breakfasts are Very Delicious! They offer scrambled eggs and bacon and a wide variety of fabulous cheeses, fresh fruits, and charcuterie. There are cereals, breads and juices, croissants and cakes, and all kinds of coffee, in a very charming Breakfast room, with a very attentive Breakfast staff. And the Reception staff are the kindest, especially Eric, Gaelle, Fareed, and others, who are always welcoming, helpful, and totally professional. I would highly recommend this hotel!

We had a wonderful stay at Gounod, mainly because of the very helpful and friendly staff - a huge thanks especially to Julliana and Fareed. The Hotel is perfectly located - in a quiet space close to all the shopping, dining and the beaches. We also visited the sister hotel's Splendid rooftop pool - which had an awesome view. And would recommend all guests to visit at least once.

Lovely hotel within easy walking distance of beach and restaurants. Beds comfortable and lovely little balcony to sit out on. Rooms made up daily. Emailed hotel week before to recommend a restaurant and was a fabulous meal in French grill place off the beaten track. Used sister hotel, Splendid, to visit roof terrace bar and pool. Definitely recommend this hotel
