Fern Resort Mae Hong Son

After growing up, visiting and living in and around MHS for many years, I finally spent a few nights at the Fern Resort. I’ve always known it was the highest rated accommodation in MHS but I was surprised at how beautiful it was and how extensive the grounds are. It was much larger than I thought with many rooms/cabins and enough space to accommodate them all scattered around rice fields and jungle paths. Each room/suite is similar but the view from the veranda/porch will vary depending on the location. Even if it is at full occupancy, there are quite places to sit and be still throughout the property in addition to the 2-3 coffee shops, dining and other areas. Rooms are well maintained with a few minor maintenance issues (see photos). Staying there in the dry hot season you will quickly realize you are in a literal oasis of green as surrounding hillsides are parched and dry but everything in Fern’s valley is still lush and green. It’s just a lovely place – very relaxing with much to explore - just on the grounds - let alone if you venture off on one of the nature/adventure trails. For the price you cannot go wrong. Staff are friendly and the majority are local hires who live in villages close by. It is 7-8 km outside of Mae Hong Son town so having your own transport definitely will make it easier but they have regular shuttles that can take you back into town. But if you want a few relaxing days surrounded by nature, this is the place to stay. You won’t be roughing it. As far as Thai eco retreats go, you won’t be disappointed. Highly recommended.

This is a stunning location on the edge of the National Park. The Shan style cottages were private and spacious but our bed was rather hard and there wasn’t much storage space. The grounds are beautifully maintained and you feel you are living in the forest. The swimming pools were beautifully situated in different parts of the ground. The staff who are mainly from the Karen tribe were charming and helpful. The buffet breakfast was delicious with a large choice and the dinner menu had a good choice of local dishes from the Mae Hong Son region. The drive from Chiang Mai is about 6 hours of fairly tortuous mountain roads but the scenery is magnificent throughout - it’s well worth the effort. We will certainly visit again if we return to Northern Thailand.

A tranquil resort amidst mountains and rice fields, with the sound of a babbling brook where ever you are in the property, time to put those devices away and recharge your mind and spirit.Efficient and friendly staff make your stay a real pleasure!

This eco resort is hidden in the dense green forest, 8 km from the city. The resort impressed us at first sight. Staffs were nice and helpful. The path that leads to our room was surrounded by numerous green trees like we were trekking into a thick tropical jungle. Our room was a peaceful Shan style cottage with thatched roof and wooden floor in the midst of lush greenery. Room was clean and comfortable. Everything was well-functioning. There was a campfire in the night and coal-roasted sweet potatoes for free. Their buffet breakfast was also good. Such a wonderful moment :). Highly recommend!

We were here 22 years ago, then in the summer, now in the rainy season. The capacity of the hotel has increased, the flair has decreased. There are fewer dogs than before and only one of the typical water-powered bamboo instruments still works. The rooms are designed as bungalows and create seclusion. There is still no shelf for the washing bag in the bathroom. But there is a small desk to sort the photos in the evening. Breakfast at the rich buffet, dinner with typical dishes. From the infinity pool there is a beautiful view of flowers and rice fields.The staff is very friendly and helpful. If we were back in the area, we would stop here again.

This is a superb little resort, wonderfully done to feel like you’re in the forest. Rooms are very dark and beds traditionally Thai hard but so the job well. Good food and very jolly service. Beautiful streams follow you round the resort along with their friendly dogs and excellent, if not a little tired, facilities such as coffee shop and pools.

A paradise hotel, full of lush greenery. Very friendly, helpful staff. Great buffet breakfast. Good food in restaurant. Good location. Lovely dogs to trek with. Great coffee. Comfortable, clean room overlooking lake.

The Fern Resort is a beautiful place to stay, in its own little valley, looking out across some paddy fields. The grounds have been planted with an amazing variety of trees, home to many birds, butterflies and insects. The welcome we received was exceptional and we we very well treated by the lovely staff. They even prepared me a long apple cake and a bunch of flowers for my birthday. We were there with my elderly mother and she was treated very kindly by all. I highly recommend the Fern Resort when coming to this part of Thailand, worth making a detour for to spend a few days here

Stunning resort! So peaceful and relaxing. Rooms are a really nice size and the beds are super comfortable. Breakfast is plentiful with such a beautiful setting. Would definitely recommend staying here
