Clonmel Castle had the perfect location for our viewing of the solar eclipse with its expansive lawns on top of Prospect Hill, complete with a viewing party and live music hosted by the owner. Lynneee is the "chatelaine" of this beautiful 12,000 square foot mansion and is an attentive, witty, and charming hostess, as well as the chef. She made us feel welcome and comfortable during our stay. We rented the penthouse suite for six people, ourselves, our daughter and husband and two grandaughters. Our suite was very large with separate bedrooms for the adults and a draped-off sleeping area with a double bed for the children. The girls loved the space to play and we all loved the beautiful bathroom. We were able to prepare our own lunches in the kitchenette. Breakfast in the formal dining room was amazing. Lynneee treated us to delicious freshly cooked eggs benedict, perhaps the best I have ever had. We also had dinner at the castle which was a very large serving of roast beef and these amazing potatoes gratinees, and while seated in chippendale chairs. Except for the kitchen and office the entire main floor of the house is for use of guests. The house is very tastefully furnished with leather sofas and antiques appropriate to the period of the mansion's construction, 1929. The natural wood of the mansion has been beautifully preserved. The children loved the "throne room" complete with suits of armour. There is also a waterfall on a small river at the base of the hill which the children enjoyed. And of course there is the beach in Port Dover and the harbour with its fishing boats. Restaurants in the village are famous for fresh perch. We had a wonderful visit and will definitely return.
