We stayed at Cholderton Youth Hostel during a recent bike adventure, and I honestly can’t thank Mel enough for the welcome we received. We arrived much later than planned—covered in mud, exhausted, and feeling pretty broken after a tough 100km off-road. The moment Mel opened the door and saw the state of us, she gave me a hug, helped us with our bikes, and immediately put the kettle on! She even upgraded us to an ensuite and cooked us a lovely dinner well past the usual time. The hostel itself was spotless, warm, and the beds were incredibly comfy with plenty of hot water. We only saw the beautiful surroundings the morning light, but it was stunning. We’ll definitely be back to actually explore the grounds and see the animals! Highly, highly recommend."

My family (two adults, three kids) stayed for two nights in July 2025. We just returned from our two-week trip, and my kids would tell anyone that Cholderton was their very favorite place we stayed. I'd recommend it to anyone, and particularly those with children. The staff are phenomenally friendly, organized, and kind. If you're looking for a family room and don't see one available on the website, consider calling or emailing the hostel. Our room was lovely, and perfect for our family. We found this hostel because we were looking for lodging close to Stonehenge. We did one of the early morning/late evening "Stone Circle" experiences (also highly recommended!), and wanted something close by. I can't imagine anything being closer to Stonehenge than this hostel. It was a straight shot down the road. We were Americans renting a car in England, so this is what we needed! The other lodging we considered was in Salisbury and it would have been lovely as well, but I'm so glad we ended up here instead. This hostel was a perfect location for our visits to Stonehenge, Salisbury, and a day trip to Durdle Door and the Bovington Tank Museum. If we'd had more time, the location would also have been great for a drive up to Avebury and other prehistoric sites in the area. I do think you'd want to have a car to stay here, but maybe there are public transportation options I'm not aware of. Our room and beds were perfectly comfortable and clean. We were fortunate to have an en suite, which was also impeccably clean, but even if we'd shared a bathroom, it would have been fine - there are many, and they all looked excellent. Our window looked out over the farm, and opening the window made our room very airy and cool - much appreciated during our July visit, and not the case for every place we stayed. Every hostel facility was perfection - the kitchen is fully equipped, the common room is perfection, and the back garden was loved by my kids. Security is very important to me, and we felt very safe at this hostel. We needed a code to enter the building, and a different code to enter our room. By day, the hostel is adjacent to a very sweet nursery school and on the site of the Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm. Parking is ample and off the main road. A major bonus is that hostel guests are able to visit the Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm as part of the room rate! I'd check on this benefit before booking, as it's so generous that I can hardly even believe it, but it was definitely true as of July 2025. We ended up changing our plans to include a half day at Cholderton during our hostel stay. (Sorry, Old Sarum!) This was a true highlight of our trip for my children. Note that we visited during Cholderton's business hours - this is not like an AirBnb farm stay, as Cholderton is a structured visitor attraction with staffing and clear routines for the animals. So plan accordingly, but plan to include Cholderton. :) I wish I'd taken photos of our room! But rest assured that photo

This is a great self catering hostel. Bedrooms and bedding were clean and good showers, and the staff member, Mel, was friendly. There is a self catering kitchen with 2 cookers, two microwaves and 2 kettles, so we never had to wait to use equipment. There’s no options for cooked meals at the hostel, despite mention of them being available by prior arrangement - there’s just no staff around in the morning who would provide this. Amesbury has shops, supermarkets and takeaways, so this wasn’t a problem for us. The hostel is well located for Stonehenge and Salisbury, which had a great market when we went. Our children loved the free farm access, feeding the animals and playing in the woodland playground in the day, and using the sandpit and trampoline after hours, when the farm was closed.

We booked the complete YH for a self-catering family gathering of about 35 people for 2 nights. Despite advertising it as self catering for upto 70 people, the cooking & dining facilities were not suitable for a self-catering group our size, let alone 70. Numerous calls back and forth were had when we realised the photos shown of the large eating area were of the cafe, not the YH and that the ovens were small ones. We brought our own equip, including roasting pans thankfully as we would not have been able to cook for 35 with the equip provided. A number of other issues including staff regularly walking through the main room with no hellos or acknowledgements of disturbing privacy, & also included going into the kitchen taking items which had been brought by the group. There was no dishwasher which we would have expected for large group bookings. Also the kitchen was very small and therefore having people in and out to make hot drinks when cooking was not good: we were told off for moving the kettle to a communal area, particularly as it blew the wrongly wired plugs. A number of the group commented on how rude the warden was (reading other reviews I don't feel so bad saying this now), thankfully the manager made up for this and was very helpful. The accommodation was clean and the space was lovely for mingling. It was good to have the play area etc next door for young children.

On this occasion a sole traveller, I have used many hostel in UK and abroad, for many years. I have never really needed to do a review, however on this occasion, I felt the need to write. This was obviously an affiliate Hostel, which was obvious on arrival. Hostel parking only for 3 cars, other parking a 5 minute walk away, was never advised by this on YHA website or on arrival. On arrival, I rang bell several times, automatic door, staff on reception with head in phone, had to knock window for response, which was met with distaste. I offered my name and advised I had booked, was not aware of my booking, had to ask colleague who seemed to know more. Overall a cold welcome to start. Staff shown me to my room, handed key and left, no offer of the basic site orientation, anything I needed to know, i.e. toilet, shower, dining room. Bed was clean, but table sticky in room, seats dirty appearance, bed side lights not working, floor needed better cleaning attention, no individual secure storage. Once settle I went again to reception to ask where I could get dinner, I was dismissed and advised dinner served next door in café of other site, I went through and they were cleaning up and closing, it was 5.15pm. YHA Website advertised evening meals, obviously in correct. I had to go to local village supermarket for food stuffs for my evening meal. went to bed at 10.30pm, there was obviously a wedding function on the neighboring site, just outside my window, music and disco went on until 3am, disturbed nights sleep through out. Toilet and shower facilities grubby, and low standard of cleaning. Left early 8am next day, no staff on reception, key drop only. I had booked for one night only.

I/we stay in many hostels. I know hostels offer value-only accommodation, our expectations are modest. This hostel has a poor state of upkeep and exceptionally poor customer service. Yesterday (and for sure I could have expressed myself more constructively) I went to the staffer (Will) on reception and explained that I would be leaving a bad review: Because our en-suite shower was tepid, the bathroom mirror light and shaving point did not work, broken toilet seat, no where aside from beds to unpack our vanity bags, no bin and all of the installed reading lights neither wired nor working. The uninterested staffer shrugged their shoulders, said “I don’t care” and advised that I could use a communal shower. After taking a moment, I countered that as the member of staff he should care, we’d booked en-suite expecting the en-suite to be as advertised, and that he could be offering solutions to the raised problems - for example calling a plumber for the tepid shower, calling an electrician for the faulty shaving-mirror/vanity-light, offering a bin, repairing broken toilet seat etc. The staffer’s response was a further shrug and his unhelpful comment of “I don’t like the hostel anyway”. The following morning all of the sockets were faulty in the kitchen meaning no kettle, microwave or toaster availability for breakfast. No staffer, a notice advised to phone a mobile if any problems: I did, explaining the problems. All I was advised is that neither a staffer nor manager would be onsite for at least 20 minutes. I and another guest tried to find circuit boards to check ‘breaker switches’: The other guest found the kitchen one, reset the switch and the kitchen sockets power was restored. Bedding was clean, unpleasant eating area. I doubt I’ll be rebooking this hostel, which is a shame because its setting and location are nice: My advice would be to spend a bit more money and avoid the disappointment of staying in the hostel.

I've just stayed at the hostel. 1st of all, this is a YHA affiliated hostel which I wasn't aware of when I booked and the YHA website doesn't really make this clear. The hostel is clean enough but is very old and tired inside. The TV in the lounge doesn't work correctly and I was told by the manager, who didn't know how to work it either btw, that the TV is old and due to be charged. She didn't know when tho !! My main gripe is that they didn't really know when guests, myself and others, were booked in for even though I booked through the YHA website. Also I was booked in for 2 consecutive nights only to find that when I went to the dormitory that I used on night 1, that I had been moved. Nobody had made me aware at all. So the place is just a bit of a shambles but it's well placed for Salisbury and the surrounding area. It's not a patch on the other YHA hostels I've stayed in tho so beware and don't expect too much

I celebrated my 30th here over the weekend and it’s was absolutely brilliant! The whole set up of the farm and hostel made for a perfect day! We fed the animals, went wine tasting and even had the garden bit next to the hostel to ourselves! We’re were also fortunate enough to have a silent disco in the barn later that evening!! I’d never considered having a party/get together here before but it was amazing and would 100% recommend to anyone looking to organise something similar!! The rooms were also really clean, comfy and spacious and staying in bunk beds made it even more fun!!
