Andy Homestay (Sinan Road)

Andy is a great host . He responded promptly to our questions. Location was great and with room vanity was sufficient. It represented typical old Shanghai vibe and if you are comfortable to experience Shanghai old building; this is the place.

Nice place to stay but there are a few things to be aware of. Like all places in China there is a registration system. We sent our passports to Andy who was able to do it for us. The neighbourhood feels very safe and has security at the front. All former mansions are subdivided into rooms which are then occupied by many people. As a result, you will share a front door and some of the corridor. Because of this, the rooms are rather close together which meant in the morning you would often hear people cooking, talking etc. and in evening you might hear a bit of snoring. All together it wasn’t bad and it felt more local. The room itself was pretty well equipped and had two large areas for the upstairs and downstairs. We enjoyed the projector and kitchen. The bathroom’s water pressure/shower head was a little weak and often got a little flooded as we were given disposable linen. The disposable bedsheets were fine but the towels were not really absorbent. The location was probably the nicest aspect. It was nice and uniquely shanghai unlike staying in the newer parts of town.

The place is very clean and comfortable for a large family of 5-6 max. The area is great and has many places to explore. Theres a convenience store right outside the main entrance which is nice. Overall satisfied and wont mind staying again in the future.

Andy is very responsive and easy to communicate with on WeChat. He gave very great instructions on checking in. Pros: location is excellent, very cool to stay in a neighborhood with other locals. It was a very old building, and you’re by the Sinan neighborhood right when you step out. Interior layout was cool, had a loft space upstairs Con: lack of cleanliness in the bathroom. There was a lot of black gunk (mildew or mold) in the tile grout all over the bathroom, and kitchen counter corners. The pot provided to cook with had brown stains inside, all the utensils were not clean either. We were provided reusable towels which were nice and hygienic. The bed covers are also covered in one time use plastic type of covering, which wasnt the most comfortable but at least hygienic. I let the host know but overall fine stay for the location mainly.

Andy is very responsible and responds to questions very quickly. The house has an excellent location—right in the heart of the city. Nearby attractions include Sinan Mansion and Fuxing Park, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around. I really like this traditional Chinese house.
