I've visited the Black Horse many times over the last eleven years, in fact, I've lost count of how many times I've eaten there - but never before on a Sunday. On weekdays you couldn't hope for a better restaurant and dining experience, but Sundays are a whole different kettle of gourmet fish (or meat or veggie). On Sundays, diners are packed into every available corner of the restaurant. Disabled diners can't get through without other diners (quite happily) moving, and the staff seem really overstretched. We were unlucky enough to get a regular (small) table for two in an alcove with a children's party (it was actually Grandpa's birthday with every generation present) surrounded by understandably loud (very) loud shrieking and general conversation - including from the other (adult) party of eight pressed against the back of my chair. Service was way below par. At one stage, after a long wait hopelessly trying to attract attention, I, unsuccessfully, tried to fetch my wife a glass of wine from the bar - but the affronted staff refused to give it to me and sent me away to wait for a waiter to deliver it. Not the best memories for our 40th Wedding Anniversary (they ask you to let them know if it's a special occasion when you book - which is a waste of words as it's then ignored!) Lunch on Sunday - three courses with wine and a beer is about 5p short of £100. So after eleven years of close to perfect service, a lesson was learnt. Never, Never on a Sunday.
