A charming inn near Shimabara Port and Shimabara Port Station.
The landlady was incredibly kind, making for a wonderful stay that made the age of the facilities almost unnoticeable.
The hot spring water is 100% natural and at a perfect temperature.
The room, while slightly dated, was spacious and offered a great view in the morning. If I had to nitpick, the heating was a bit too strong, making the air slightly dry.
Evening shopping is convenient, with FamilyMart, Seven-Eleven, and a local supermarket open until around 9 PM.
For dinner, we enjoyed local fish and other dishes at an izakaya called Hifumi, about a 5-minute walk away.
Not only were we treated courteously upon departure, but they also kindly provided a ride to the Unzen Volcano Disaster Memorial Museum.
I think the location was perfectly suited to a trip that included visiting Kumamoto and Aso, taking a ferry to Shimabara, and then continuing on to Fukuoka via the Shimabara Railway and local lines.

This old-fashioned seaside hot spring inn has dated facilities and long-serving staff, but they treat everyone with utmost enthusiasm. If you're coming for the facilities, you might complain, but if you're here to see how people who have worked at this inn for most of their lives diligently care for their home, then you've come to the right place.

It's very close to Shimabara Port, within walking distance.
It's situated on a small hill, about ten meters higher than the surrounding area, but the rooms don't offer much of a view.
The bed is the cheapest type of tatami, sleek enough to sleep on.
Dinner is relatively good, about the standard of a typical izakaya. Breakfast is not very good.

I'm a solo traveler with limited Japanese skills and stayed here for two nights without meals.
Unfortunately, this ryokan didn't meet my needs. The location is close to the ferry terminal and train station. However, it's difficult to find, as there are no signs and you have to climb up to the hotel via the driveway. The rooms and the surrounding area are nice and very clean, but noticeably old. The building's age is especially apparent in the bathroom, which really needs renovation. The showers, however, are modern and good. Another problem is that the staff doesn't speak English. Overall, I can't recommend it for international travelers.

The hot spring inn was generally okay. The staff were polite and helpful, and even offered to drive me to the island railway station. The hot spring water and environment were clean. However, the Japanese breakfast was too small in both variety and quantity; it wasn't enough for a woman like me.

A very friendly and welcoming hot spring hotel! Full of old-fashioned charm, the large public baths are also very comfortable, and it's very close to Shimabara Port!

This is a Japanese-style hotel. The facilities are a bit old, and there's no elevator. The staff, all older women, were very polite. The hotel has a good location, close to both the JR and bus stations, and just a few minutes' walk to the ferry terminal, making it a good option if you want to take a ferry to and from Kumamoto.

Very characteristic hot spring inn, staff service attitude is very good, help move luggage up the stairs, environment place clean. Very close to Kumamoto Ferry Terminal, would be better if the room has a bathroom.

The hotel is in a great location. You can see the sign as soon as you get off the bus at the station. It is just up the hill and only a few minutes' walk from Shimabara Port Train Station. It is very convenient to go to Isahaya Station. The aunt and grandmother are very dedicated to running the hotel. Although they don't speak English very well, they have strong communication skills. The rooms and the large public bath are a little old, but they are also very charming. The hot spring is super comfortable. We were assigned a room with a mountain view and it was so shocking when we opened the window!
The room provides yukata, towels, kettle & teacups, toothbrushes and hand soap. The large bath provides shampoo & shower gel, cotton swabs and shower caps. There is no conditioner or skin care products, so you need to bring your own.
The hot spring hotels in Shimabara do not require tattoos. We stayed in Unzen Hell the night before and did not see any notice.

Old hotel, no elevator, you have to carry your luggage yourself. The facilities are relatively basic, but the good thing is the service like that of a grandma's house, and the direct-hanging hot spring

The lady boss was very friendly and even drove us to Shimabara Castle.
Old hot spring hotel, large rooms, high cost performance
There is a microwave oven in the basement, and the boss is also willing to provide chopsticks and tableware, which is very much appreciated.

It's a Japanese-style room with a view of the ocean. The cushions were thin and hurt my feet, and there were no chairs, so I was disappointed. I couldn't sleep because I was bitten by insects.
