We were greeted rather abruptly by a grumpy Frau, which set the tone for our stay. The room itself was clean, but rest was disturbed by the noise from the kitchen closing up late at night. We had hoped for a romantic meal, but sadly the ambience inside was more like a café trying (and failing) to pass as fine dining. The food was acceptable – the sea bass was well cooked, though the pork steak was slightly underdone. Our waiter was a delight, but the atmosphere created by the head Frau clearly filtered down to the rest of the staff, which was a shame. Overall, we’d rate it 3 stars. The location is excellent, in a beautiful town, but the hotel really needs to reconsider its first point of contact and the tone it sets for paying guests. Choice (apologies if it’s spelt wrong) you were a dream, thanks for looking after us.

Spring stopover
Great location in centre of town with some nearby parking available which was a bonus. Excellent breakfast and dinner and helpful staff. Bathroom was very compact and shower tricky to access so would not suit everyone.

This is a colorful, charming, and old (as in multiple centuries) hotel that calls on its historical roots and location in the ancient town of Staufen in Breisgau (even more centuries old) to produce a thoroughly enjoyable stay. While the fixtures and furnishings are designed to evoke antiquity, make no mistake: the rooms are clean and comfortable, the expected television and wi-fi are present, and the restaurant offers a good menu featuring traditional as well as more-modern cuisine. The final, and most important element is the Löwen’s hotel staff: from the hotel manager to the entry-level restaurant servers, everyone was friendly, energetic, and eager to help.

Hotel Goethe
We had actually booked the Lowen Hotel in Staufen, but were moved to the Goethe because they said they wouldn't be able to serve breakfast at the Lowen due to a staffing issue. Was disappointing as we were really looking forward to staying there.
The Goethe is ok. A bit tired and old fashioned looking. Rooms are clean & the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was ok, but you cannot choose your cheese & meats, they bring you a platter. We would have preferred to choose our own. Not great quality bread rolls, either. Nice coffee & a good selection of cereals/yogurt.
As this is an older hotel, there is no lift & we struggled to carry our heavy cases up the stairs.
Overall was ok but probably wouldn't stay again.

Authentic old world charm. Small room, no english cable channels. Comfortable bed. No elevator in the hotel. Be prepared for steps.

Charmantes Stadthotel
Schönes Hotel mitten im Stadtzentrum, zweckmässiges und charmantes Zimmer. Sehr freundliches Personal.
Das Frühstück ist liebevoll angerichtet, auch wenn die Auswahl (Brot, Joghurt, Müsli, Saft, Rührei, Käse- und Fleisch auf Anfrage) nicht riesig ist.
Das Bad ist etwas in die Jahre gekommen, aber absolut zweckmässig und es funktioniert alles. Wir kommen gerne wieder.
