Dreadful place. The dining and eating facilities were shut so no breakfast or evening meal. The room I was in was shabby and run down. The towels were tiny, no telephone and much traffic noise up until about 10pm. Also no room service as standard, only on request. How this place gets three stars is beyond me. Never again.

I booked this hotel for an overnight trip to the Potteries. This place has good bones but has been let go. The furnishings were shabby, light globes didn’t work, the tiles on the step were dangerously loose, the shower was a dribble and the sheets didn’t even fit the bed. He folk next door were partying into the small hours and I really regretted staying here.

The worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Very run down, no staff except for a receptionist. Although the bedding and towels were clean, the rest of the room left a lot to be desired. Stains on the carpet looked awful. My friend had booked this for us several months ago and specifically requested ground floor rooms as both of our husbands cannot climb stairs. My friend had to make quite a fuss to get the ground floor rooms we had been promised when booking. She was told the hotel is full and room changes would be very difficult. We were eventually given the rooms we had requested. We stayed here a year ago when the owners were very new. We face them a second chance in the hope that there would have been improvements made, but we were very disappointed to see that it was worse!! Never again!

What a back street horrible hotel. Staff about as much use as no use. Gave no info regarding the room the WiFi the so call bar/restaurant. The place is dilapidated and so outdated. Its cleaning services seem to be non existent. The grounds are covered in rubbish and cigarette butts. The room looked like it had been the victim of a break in with a window lock in the bathroom hanging off. The lights are dusty and the room was cobwebbed. The bed was relatively comfy but the pillows were lumpy and out of shape. The so called menu in the bar is nothing short of a dire transport cafe in need of revamping. The staff didn’t have any idea about times for check out or whether the bar/restaurant was open (at 5pm). The entrance is almost seedy. Not recommended at all. Couldn’t wait to leave. Unfortunately I had booked the room on line for a very last minute trip. Now I know why they were the only ones with availability

The Tollgate is a clean and comfortable hotel... The rooms are clean, basic and functional with the added freebies of coffee, water and soaps. It also hosts a fabulous bar and restaurant. The bar personnel especially are fabulous, friendly and couldn't do more for their clients.

We decided to stay one night to break up a long journey. I had reasonable expectations with the room costing £50 for the night, but a main selling point was the available leisure facilities at an advertised fee of £5 a session. My mistake on this occasion was not checking Tripadvisor first. In brief this is place I would not stay again. Our room looked like everything had come from a second hand shop. It appeared never to have been decorated. The bed mattress made it seem like I was sleeping on a trampoline with a few missing springs. I have never seen a family size fridge in a hotel room. On checking in the reception area had screens enclosing it reminding me of those you see in old American films in down town New York. Designed to protect staff from the risk of violence and abuse. I arrived Saturday afternoon and was told the leisure centre was closed. The bar was closed. The restaurant was closed. Not what I was expecting in a hotel and leisure centre. The whole area was dirty and a mess. On Sunday morning we did decide to use the gym facilities before leaving and was not disappointed. A great range of equipment. There was a squash court but it was not used by me. A pass was £5. The other positive is a nice view from the hotel of the cricket ground. So in summary… I will not stay again. The place is a mess. Interestingly I note the management do not appear to comment on reviews.

The room door doesn't close, you can see daylight and the room was freezing. I was told they have no other rooms and they will get us a heater. Disgusting response and unsafe. Paid and didn't stay!! Reception staff were embarrassed when she couldn't get in the door either.
