I stayed at this hotel upon arrival and departure from Zanzibar. The first time it was a short and enjoyable stay. Unfortunately, during my second stay I was upgraded to room 301, which is large and overlooks the swimming pool, but it needs maintenance, especially the bathroom, which needs immediate maintenance. It is a very noisy room, as you can hear the sounds of the elevator and the water pump. The furniture is luxurious, but old and needs to be upgraded. The location is excellent, overlooking the port, but the entrance to the hotel is on a potholed street. The staff is friendly and respectful.

The Receptionists welcomed us with smiles, everyone was welcoming. The food was great, a wide variety for breakfast including local dishes, Indian and other dishes which we tasted and they were great. The hotel is located in Stone Town, a neighborhood is full of history, markets with spices that are walk-able distances away. It has taxis in the front door to take you anywhere at affordable fee. The shores to Slave Island are just walk-able distance away. The ferry sounds can wake you up earlier, other than that everything was great.

The location is perfect. Short walking distance from the main areas in Stonetown. The pool is lovely and the breakfast rooftop view was really nice in the morning. The only downside: i upgraded us to a suit and it was a mistake. There was only an old bathtub and it was really gross. The normal rooms would have been much better to stay in, so don’t upgrade. Other than that, we had a lovely stay.

This is quite a nice hotel that is on the outskirts of the nicest areas in Stone Town. The swimming pool is very nice as well as the roof top area that offers breakfast

I landed at Golden Tulip because Trip.com messed up my booking elsewhere, and I only found out about it at the last minute. The location is right by the port, on a side of town that feels quite sketchy. However, Stone Town is small and safe, so it didn’t matter too much. The rooms are nice enough. They have everything you need. People are friendly all over Zanzibar, and at the Golden Tulip no less. The pool is lovely, and service is okay. Sometimes I had to ask more than once, phone down because my towel had disappeared, or guide them through my own bill. The restaurant is pretty bad. I’m not a particularly fussy eater, but don’t feel the need to eat bad food. I ordered three tester dishes on my first day, and didn’t finish any. Another traveler had a similar experience. Breakfast is okay. There is fruit, yoghurt, pastries, omelettes on request, toast, cereal sometimes, and a variety of hot dishes. Nobody seems to notice when the table has no cutlery or when the coffee, milk or a given hot dish runs out. Most days, I found the cereal (if they had it), fruit, and at least one hot dish edible.

The hotel is tired and in need of renovation. But it's perfectly adequate for a transit overnight. The shower has good water pressure. There's a rooftop restaurant where you can have a delicious breakfast with soft music and panoramic views of the sea and surrounding area. There's a courtyard with a pool. It's regularly maintained, making it a pleasant place to cool off after a stroll through the old town. The downsides include the windows opening, but the wind can break them, and you can't leave them open overnight (the air conditioner is noisy). Neither the table lamps nor the floor lamp worked, so there wasn't enough lighting. They promised to send a repairman in the morning, but it looks like the problem has been going on for a while. We arrived at 10 PM, so we booked the closest hotel to the airport, and a $15 taxi got us to bed in 15 minutes. In the morning, we took a boat from the beach to Turtle Island (15 minutes full speed), visited the Freddie Mercury Museum... and after lunch, for 80,000 shillings, we got to Kendwa.
