I last stayed at Sun City around 2023/2024 for a conference at the Main Hotel. The rooms were extremely old, dated and smelled musty. They felt so worn that no amount of cleaning could remove the rust and mildew that had clearly accumulated over many years. After that visit, I vowed not to return until there had been a proper revamp. Unfortunately, I had to return last week for another conference. As part of the organising team, I was required to stay on the property from Friday to Wednesday, this time at the Cascades. After my previous visit, my expectations were already low. I genuinely didn’t think they could get any lower. Sadly, the experience was even worse. I was assigned a room on the first floor, and much like my previous stay, the room felt incredibly old. The décor and finishes looked like they hadn’t been updated in at least 20 years. The carpet, bathroom, shower and even the beds all looked worn, mildewy and grimy to the point where I barely wanted to touch anything. The room also smelled damp. The final straw for me was encountering frogs in the passage and eventually finding some in my room. I am deathly afraid of frogs, so this was extremely distressing. To make matters worse, there were also animal droppings in the passage. At that point I genuinely couldn’t tell which animals were responsible. Overall, it was a horrible experience. I do have a lot of empathy for the staff who have to operate in this environment. Reading other reviews about unfriendly staff suddenly makes more sense. The current state of the hotel, and parts of the resort itself, is not something any employee would feel proud to represent. It’s honestly sad to see what was once such an iconic destination deteriorate like this. Sun City still has so much potential, but it desperately needs serious investment and refurbishment to restore it to what it once was. .
