Ryokan Yamatoya Reviews

Room - booked by mistake a room without shower so had to use the onsen. Room is big, 2 bedrooms, 2 toilets, a powder room and a living area. Location - look for Harada Dental Clinic, turn left into carpark. The carpark for Ryokan Yamatoya is on the right side. Entrance to Ryokan is from the carpark Takachiho Gorge nearby. 365 store walking distance. Dinner & Breakfast - a feast, many items, highlight at dinner is Miyazaki Beef. Overall, an accommodation in a good location!

We stayed in a Japanese-Western Room that had a private shower and toilet. We thoroughly enjoyed the multi-course Kaiseki dinners and traditional breakfasts. There is also free parking located directly behind the ryokan. The ryokan is very close to Takachiho Shrine, making sightseeing easy. It is about 5 min drive to the Takachiho Gorge parking.

Magnificent ryokan! One of my best experiences in Japan, however, we unfortunately couldn't have either dinner or breakfast. Otherwise, the place, the onsen, and the room were all top-notch!

This hotel offers a unique 'two-for-one' experience. The room was incredibly comfortable and spotlessly clean. Dinner was of exceptional quality, and the minibar was fully stocked with complimentary drinks, including sake.

The location was good, close to Takachiho Gorge. The room was clean and comfortable, but there were many small insects. The food was just okay. I had requested special dietary accommodations in advance, but they weren't reflected at all. People with allergies should be cautious. When I contacted them about possibly being late for check-in due to a flight delay, the owner's response was a blunt 'that's not possible.' As someone in the service industry, I found that reply questionable. I believe there could have been a more polite way to say it. It was unpleasant. Many of the staff are foreign, and while I appreciate their effort, communication in Japanese was difficult. The amenities, like toothbrushes, were plentiful. There was also a drink bar with bottled tea and alcohol. They even provided chairs and cushions specifically for Kagura performances. The hairdryer and iron were from ReFa, but the hairdryer was small and noisy, hurting my ears. The iron was too small to be useful. However, some might find the amenities and facilities satisfactory. I didn't use the public bath, but apparently, it's not a hot spring and isn't very large. My friend who went with me said it was just right for about three people.

Friendly staff and clean lodging. We booked half board which was worthwhile as the food quality was great and especially when restaurants close early within the area, saved us looking for dinner. However, there are a few time slots we need to abide to, which is fine as attractions usually are closed by late afternoon anyway. There is onsen in this accommodation, but it's not big. Enclosed onsen with no external views, and the water has some medical component added thus making the water reddish which may deter guests not accustomed to the color. The Ryokan location is convenient for walking to a few attractions (for those who enjoy walking about 15-30mins to either attraction), which include Takachiho Kagura performance (pre-booking required), Takachiho Gorge, Takachiho Amaterasu Railway - scenic train ride. Do note the train rides cannot be pre-booked, and end by 3PM in the afternoon. And Takachiho Gorge Boat Rental should be pre-booked, with time slot bookings open 7 days before.

The hotel has been renovated, and it was very convenient to be able to enter the front desk directly from the parking lot. The bath area, which used to have a dim atmosphere (before the renovation), was now bright and pleasant to use. The ReFa showerhead and hairdryer were a welcome addition.

The place was clean and I had a very pleasant stay. The staff seemed to be working hard. The food was also satisfying.

The service staff is friendly and the breakfast is rich and delicious. It is a very Japanese-style hotel, so there is no bathroom in the room, and you have to go to the public bath to take a bath. Takachiho is a small village, and the shops on the street close very early at night. You can walk to the shrine to watch the famous Yokagura, which is worth seeing.

The hotel and rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff were very polite and I was pleased, but the bath only had a capacity of about five people, which was disappointing.
