I have attempted to reply direct to the Highdown but the business card has the wrong email address so will have to complete your review. I often feel that comments on these sites can be unnecessarily harsh for the businesses concerned and I would hate to give the wrong impression.. This is the third time we have stayed at the Highdown, the second time in Room 2. Despite the images on the website this room has not been refurbished and, although very clean, is shabby. The bathroom has cracked tiles and a very weak, less than warm shower. The toilet has scale in it and the handle doesn't work properly. The cooked breakfast was good, although only one slice of toast. No one came to ask if we wanted more, Despite being mentioned on the menu no preserves were offered. All guests commented on this. Fresh fruit was on the side with a choice of cereals but, in the three days we were there the fruit was not replaced despite being very overripe and inedible. On one morning we and two other guests were squeezed onto two small tables right against the wall. When the third set of guests came in they unwittingly banged the door against my elbow. On the final morning we had a better table. I also didn't like that a dog was allowed to wander in and out of the dining room and kitchen.

The atmosphere was lovely and the food excellent. There’s nothing more disappointing than being served a meal that feels meagre or lacking, but at The Highdown the servings were generous and satisfying. The pie alone must have been a couple of inches thick, packed with flavour and substance — a proper hearty dish. Altogether it made for a really enjoyable meal out, with both the quality and the quantity leaving us all impressed.

We turned up unannounced & were welcomed by Nicky. Great selection of beers & ales plus an extensive menu. Plentiful food arrived swiftly & it was tasty

Went for Sunday lunch. Quite disappointing. Hard non-crispy roast potatoes, a mush of vegetables thrown in one bowl together to share amongst 3 people. We had the beef which was clearly pre-packed. Gravy was thin and greasy and little tiny portions of horseradish sauce in paper cups. Not the best sadly. We didn’t complain as it was all edible just very disappointing.

Great place to stay, if a little off the beaten track, regular bus stop a 20 minute walk(moderate pace.) The decor is faded and could do with an update, bed was really comfy, the staff were excellent and the the food was really good.

Staff and facilities as well as the restaurant food was excellent. Breakfast was mixed - smoked salmon and scrambled egg but no smoked salmon and the coffee was poor!

Adorable double room that is clean and comfy. The Inn is near some hiking trails so quite convenient. It also has good food and drink options.

I only stayed for one night but wishing I stayed for longer now! The staff were very friendly and helpful. Absolutely loved the space, the bedroom was comfortable and clean, and gave a very homey b&b feeling. I took transit and found it fairly straightforward to get to. And its an easy walk to the Tennyson monument! Would definitely recommend!
