Antica Locanda Della Via Francigena

Great food and congenial hosts. Half board while walking the Via Francigena. Family garden with a friendly cat and curious rooster. Outside of town in a rural setting away from the noise and hustle of the city. Would definitely stay again!

Stayed on night walking the Via Francigena. The room was clean, generously sized and very comfortable. The grounds we lovely and it was only a 1.8 km walk to the center of Vitealla. The food was not flawless. My risotto was well flavoured but mushy and sticky and had obviously been prepared in advance. The turkey scaloppini al limone was a bit tough and dry which was not unexpected for turkey sliced thin and then kept warm in the oven afterwards. I have some sympathy for the hotel which seems to cater to tour groups (not us) and needs to be sure everyone’s meal arrives roughly simultaneously. Things simply cannot be made to order.

We stayed here after walking all day from Viterbo to Vetralla. We arrived at about 5pm to find a party going on in the hotel - there was no real reception and we had to hunt for someone to check us in! When we did find a lady to help us she ‘checked us in’ at a desk with this party going on around us and could not have cared less about our arrival, in fact we felt like a nuisance to them. Our bags (which had been transferred for us from the last hotel) were just left outside in the garden and we had to collect them ourselves. We were given no information just shown to a room, the party carried on into the night with no sign of a restaurant service being offered and no staff in site to ask about getting dinner. The hotel is 2 miles out of town so there is nowhere else to eat. In the end we had to walk into town to get some food in the dark, down roads with with no pavements or light!! The rooms to be fair were nice and clean but overall this was a terrible experience and I would not recommend staying here if you are walking as it’s too far out of town and it really felt that they were not interested in our business.
