James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor Reviews

Stayed one night at James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor for a conference held onsite. Check-in staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel has three separate lift banks servicing different areas — if you’re unfamiliar with Wellington, definitely ask staff to explain the easiest exit route to the city. It makes a big difference. Breakfast was a very large buffet with plenty of options, though I’ve experienced better quality elsewhere. The hotel itself is older but has solid bones. Perfectly adequate for a work overnight stay. For personal travel I’d probably choose somewhere with more atmosphere, however it felt safe and comfortable. One odd feature: some rooms face an internal terrace/window area — remember to close your curtains as people can see straight in. Bed was clean and well made, the room was tidy, though the carpet is showing its age. The shower had excellent pressure and plenty of hot water — a highlight. Overall: reliable, practical conference accommodation rather than a destination stay.

Easy parking, lovely staff, breakfast delicious. However neighbours were really noisy and room a little outdated. But for the price, it was amazing value!

The family room was a great size. A clean and tidy environment and all the staff are nice and helpful. We also got all you can eat buffet and the chef was great! A great variety of food on offer. The hotel was central for us to be able to explore and also travel out to visit family. Would definitely book here again.

Overall, the hotel was clean, and the staff were friendly. The breakfast offered a good variety of options; however, we found a mouldy bagel and a hair in the full cream milk, which raised serious food safety concerns. The staff at the egg station were also not very friendly. In addition, the room's heat pump/air conditioner was very noisy, and my friend couldn't sleep well throughout the night. We hope these issues can be addressed, as they affected an otherwise pleasant stay.

Good hotel for its price, location is really good very convenient walking around the cbd. However, for the room we stayed in the toilet door had a loud creaking sound and there’s stain on mirror but other than that the room is really comfortable and clean, good for the price we are paying.

It was our first time to Wellington & our choice of hotel contributed to the great experience that we had . Location was great and staff were very helpful. Shout out to Kenneth dela Cruz as well as Abigail & Yuri at the front desk for their great customer service.

Kind of old and the lift from carpark to hotel smells. but everything else, especially location were great.

Very clean and good location.

Old hotel but maintained, breakfast needs variety. The hotel should change the indian cook, doesn’t know how to cook spaghetti and make good omelet. Food is either over or undercooked. Nothing is exceptional at the buffet.

Good sized room with comfortable bed and good shower. However, walls were paper thin and you could hear the conversation in the next room word for word. I'd expect better from a quality hotel. Great service from front desk staff. Checkout in the morning was frustratingly slow, with a queue of six or so people and only one person on the front desk.

I really like the James Cook Hotel. I have stayed there a couple of times. It's an older Hotel, but rooms are spacious and comfortable. I love the location. There is a Lift directly down to Lambton Quay, the main shopping area. Easy to walk or bus from there to other parts of town.

The hotel is ideally located, close to the action on Queen Street. The room itself was compact. The safe didn't work and needed a battery replacement. That's relatively minor. More interestingly, there was nowhere to air clothes (e.g. after a gym session) and very limited clothing hooks. The water pressure in the shower was a bit low for my liking. However, I had a city-side room high above that provided me with alaxing views of the city. Reception staff were excellent and very responsive.

Lovely service and nice hotel, would've loved a better TV that could link to Netflix. Lovely days in Wellington!
