On arrival we were greeted by Nick the owner, who informed us that we had already checked in, which was obviously incorrect as our surname is pretty unique. He was unable to explain why he had given our room to another guest who had arrived earlier, apparently purporting to be us. We were then dispatched to a lower grade room, which we unfortunately had to accept as it was late and we had been on the road for some hours. I think it would have been courteous to have mentioned at that point that we weren't getting the grade of room we had booked and paid a deposit for but for some reason he chose not to mention it. We questioned this the following morning, Nick commented that there was nothing he could do it was a mix-up and they were fully booked. He was very unprepared to remedy the matter or offer any solutions other than saying that he would only charge us the rate for a standard double room. As this was purely his mistake, I would have thought that something more could have been done -any small gesture by way of compensation would have been appreciated but instead we were made to feel grateful that we had a room at all!. We stayed in Room9 on the second floor. We found this room to be small and the bed was very uncomfortable. You could feel the springs in the mattress and we both woke up with backache. There was also a lot of road noise. After spending the day looking for alternative accommodation we had to return again to the Ravensworth, I found a discarded vacuum cleaner on the stair case of the first floor, and secure cupboards left open. (Images attached) In the entrance hall there is a notice informing all guests that after 8pm in the evening do not contact the proprietor unless it is an emergency. Following our earlier conversation I was dissuaded from engaging with him on the matters identified. At check out I did raise the matter with him and he indicated that he was completely aware of the issue, but had done nothing to address it. My concern was another guest could have tripped over the vacuum and fallen down the stairs.
