The room was clean and tidy, and having a sit-down toilet was incredibly convenient for my Swiss husband, a big foreigner. He grew up in the Swiss mountains and absolutely loves the quiet, fresh mountain air. We had quite a trek from the train station to reach the mountain, but it gave us a better understanding of the local living conditions in Zhangjiajie. Apart from tourism, there aren't many opportunities for people here to use their talents. Sometimes, we voluntarily pay a little extra, 10-30 RMB, to help the local residents. The owner was fantastic; he upgraded our two-bed room to a three-bed room for free and even upgraded our breakfast for two to feed four people. We had a hearty breakfast of steamed buns, congee, pickles, eggs, and rice noodles, all local farmhouse specialties. This room rate wouldn't include breakfast if we stayed at the foot of the mountain, and eating out there would cost 50-100+ RMB. We also met a wonderful guide at the North Gate who took us around for two days and helped us take many beautiful photos. Of course, food within the scenic area is a bit pricier, but it was all affordable. Some elderly ladies were still selling kiwifruit on the mountain even after dark. We bought three bags for 10 RMB, and even though some of them weren't perfect, we were happy to support them.
