#photovsrealitytravel Imagine standing beneath a dark Arctic sky as waves of green, pink and purple light dance above you. ✨ The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are one of the world’s most spectacular natural phenomena. But seeing them isn’t simply about traveling north — you need the right combination of darkness, clear skies, location and solar activity. So, where should you go? 🌍👇 🇳🇴 1. NORWAY | Tromsø One of the world’s most iconic Northern Lights destinations. 📍 Tromsø ✨ Fjords + Arctic landscapes + Aurora 🐕 Dog sledding • Snowmobiling • Sámi experiences Tromsø is perfect if you want to combine the Aurora with a wide range of Arctic activities. 💫 Best for: First-time Aurora hunters who want adventure, nature and a lively Arctic city. ⸻ 🇫🇮 2. FINLAND | Finnish Lapland What could be more magical than watching the Northern Lights from a glass-roofed cabin? ✨ 📍 Rovaniemi • Ivalo • Inari • Saariselkä ✨ Glass igloos + snowy forests + reindeer + Aurora Finnish Lapland is famous for its winter wonderland atmosphere and unique accommodation experiences. 💫 Best for: Couples, photographers and anyone looking for a fairytale Arctic escape. ⸻ 🇸🇪 3. SWEDEN | Abisko & Kiruna Looking for a quieter and more nature-focused experience? 📍 Abisko • Kiruna ✨ Mountains + wilderness + stars + Aurora Abisko is particularly famous for its relatively favorable conditions for Northern Lights viewing. 💫 Best for: Travelers who want fewer crowds and a peaceful Arctic adventure. ⸻ 🇮🇸 4. ICELAND | Aurora + Volcanic Landscapes Iceland gives you much more than the Northern Lights. One night you could be watching the Aurora, and the next day exploring waterfalls, glaciers, black-sand beaches and volcanic landscapes. 🌋❄️ 📍 Reykjavík • North Iceland • Rural Iceland ✨ Aurora + waterfalls + glaciers + volcanoes 💫 Best for: Travelers who want to experience several incredible natural wonders in one trip. ⸻ 🇨🇦 5. CANADA | Yukon & Northwest Territories Ready to go beyond Europe? Canada offers vast landscapes, dark skies and a truly wild Arctic atmosphere. 📍 Yukon • Northwest Territories ✨ Wilderness + endless skies + Aurora 💫 Best for: Adventurers looking for a remote and unforgettable experience. ⸻ 🇬🇱 6. GREENLAND | Aurora in the Arctic Wilderness For something completely different… Imagine glaciers, tiny Arctic settlements, enormous icebergs and the Northern Lights illuminating the sky above you. 📍 Ilulissat & surrounding areas ✨ Icebergs + glaciers + Aurora 💫 Best for: Travelers searching for a remote and extraordinary destination. ⸻ 🇺🇸 7. ALASKA | The Wild Side of the Aurora Alaska combines Northern Lights viewing with some of the world’s most dramatic wilderness. 📍 Fairbanks ✨ Aurora + wildlife + mountains + Arctic adventures 💫 Best for: Nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers. ⸻ 🌌 BUT HOW DO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS ACTUALLY FORM? The Aurora Borealis occurs when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. 💚 Green is the most common color, but strong auroral displays can also appear in shades of pink, purple, red and blue. And here’s the important part: ❌ The Northern Lights don’t appear every night. ❌ Winter doesn’t guarantee an Aurora. ❌ Being in an Arctic destination doesn’t guarantee a sighting. You need: 🌑 Dark skies ☁️ Clear weather ☀️ Solar activity 📍 A good viewing location ⸻ 🗓️ WHEN IS THE BEST TIME? The Northern Lights can generally be seen during the darker months of the year. 🇫🇮 Finland → Late August–early April 🇸🇪 Sweden → September–March 🇳🇴 Norway → Autumn–early spring But remember: clear skies can be just as important as solar activity. A strong Aurora happening behind thick clouds is still invisible. ☁️ ⸻ 🧳 WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK? 🧥 Thermal layers 🧤 Warm gloves 🧦 Thermal socks 🥾 Waterproof winter boots 🔋 Power bank 📱 Aurora forecast app 📷 Camera or phone capable of night photography And most importantly… ⏳ PATIENCE. The Aurora isn’t a scheduled show. You might wait for hours and suddenly, for a few magical minutes, the entire sky comes alive. 🌌 ⸻ 🏆 WHICH EXPERIENCE WOULD YOU CHOOSE? 🇳🇴 Norway → Fjords + Aurora 🇫🇮 Finland → Glass igloo + Aurora 🇸🇪 Sweden → Abisko + wilderness 🇮🇸 Iceland → Volcanoes + Aurora 🇨🇦 Canada → Wilderness + Aurora 🇬🇱 Greenland → Icebergs + Aurora 🇺🇸 Alaska → Adventure + Aurora 💬 If you could choose only ONE, where would you go? 🇳🇴 Norway 🇫🇮 Finland 🇸🇪 Sweden 🇮🇸 Iceland 🇨🇦 Canada 🇬🇱 Greenland 🇺🇸 Alaska 📌 Save this post for your future Northern Lights adventure. #NorthernLights #AuroraBorealis #Aurora #Travel #TravelInspiration #BucketList #Norway #Finland #Sweden #Iceland

Seeing the northern lights was one of those rare moments where reality completely exceeds the hype. Standing out in the Arctic cold, watching the sky shift from dark night into deep green glows, puts everything into perspective. Years on the bucket list, and Abisko delivered far beyond what I imagined 💚✨ For anyone who’s seen them: Does the feeling ever fade, or do you instantly start planning the next chase?

Worried about rushing or tourist traps before you go? Is 14 days enough for five countries? Will the budget be ridiculously high? After finishing the trip, I can honestly tell you: The pace can be slow, and the experience can be full 🌨️ Fairy-tale fjords and glaciers, all in one trip 🏘️ Denmark | A fairy-tale start Nyhavn's colorful wooden houses along the canal are super photogenic Don't miss the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace 💂 The Little Mermaid statue is quieter than you'd expect, perfect for daydreaming Danish pastries are flaky and delicious right out of the oven 🥐 Open-faced sandwiches are piled high with salmon The city is walkable, and two days is just right to save your energy ☕ Sweden | Full of design Take the train across the Øresund Bridge to Malmö Stockholm's Old Town has cobblestone alleys that are great for photos The subway stations are like art galleries, with each station having a different style 🎨 Head north to Abisko for less light pollution and a chance to see the aurora 🌌 Meatballs with mashed potatoes and fresh-out-of-the-oven cinnamon rolls will warm your hands Design shops are great for browsing; don't forget to pick up a wool scarf ⛵ Norway | The main event: fjords Bergen is the gateway to the fjords; check out the wooden houses in Bryggen Take a boat into Sognefjord, where cliffs plunge straight into the water 🏔️ Waterfalls cascade from the mountain tops; if you're lucky, you might see a rainbow The red fisherman's cabins in Lofoten stand on the reefs In winter, the aurora reflecting on the sea is a stunning sight ✨ Salmon is incredibly fresh; cooking for yourself at the supermarket can save money 🎅 Finland | Santa Claus is waiting for you One day in Helsinki is enough to visit the White Cathedral and Red Cathedral Cross the Arctic Circle in Rovaniemi and get a certificate 🎅 Lie in bed in a glass igloo and wait for the aurora 🛏️ Reindeer sleds move slowly, and the sound of the bells is super healing 🦌 Have fun at the husky farm; the dogs are so enthusiastic they'll melt your heart You haven't really experienced Finland until you've jumped into an ice lake after a sauna 🚗 Iceland | Wrapping up with a ring road trip Rent a car in Reykjavik for a four-day loop around the island The Golden Circle's geysers and Gullfoss waterfall are spectacular 🌋 The black sand beaches on the South Coast are great for photos, and the basalt columns are very photogenic Ice chunks float in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, looking like something from another planet 🧊 Don't forget to apply a face mask while soaking in the Blue Lagoon The wind is strong enough to blow you away, so a windbreaker is more useful than a down jacket 💡 Travel tips Book accommodation two or three months in advance; popular areas fill up fast 🏨 Use the layering method; a windproof outer layer is more important than a thick cotton coat Credit cards are accepted everywhere; just bring a small amount of cash 💳 You must rent a car in Iceland; ferries are more efficient for the fjord sections Lock in international flights early to save enough for a meal ✈️ It gets dark at 3:00 PM in winter, so don't overpack your itinerary One trip to the Nordics isn't enough, but these 14 days will be worth remembering for a long, long time 💫

As the largest country in Northern Europe, Sweden stretches over 1,500 km from north to south, with a vast range of character: the south features pastoral castles and colorful fishing villages, the center has forests, lakes, and ancient towns, and the northern Lapland enters the Arctic Circle, where auroras, reindeer, and Sami culture take turns appearing. City strolls, coastal island hopping, wilderness hiking, and aurora hunting all offer unique surprises. 🌍 Where to go in Sweden? 📍 Gothenburg & Bohuslän | Maximum West Coast Relaxation Gothenburg is Sweden's second-largest city, more laid-back than Stockholm, and the gateway to West Coast cuisine and the archipelago. You can explore the city slowly by tram, eat cinnamon rolls in the colorful wooden houses of the Haga district, visit the kid-friendly Universeum science center, or board submarines and warships at the Maritiman Maritime Museum. The Bohuslän coast is known as Sweden's "most beautiful coast," with fishing villages dotting the rugged granite shoreline. Smögen, Fjällbacka, and Grebbestad are classic towns perfect for eating oysters and lobster or kayaking through the fjords. Also recommended are the Tanum Rock Carvings (a World Heritage site) and Carlsten Fortress on Marstrand Island. 📍 Kiruna & Lapland | Auroras and Ice & Snow Wonders The premier region of Northern Sweden, one of Europe's last remaining wild frontiers. Kiruna is the largest city in the north, thriving on iron mining; the entire city is currently "relocating," and the underground mine tour feels like science fiction. The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi is the world's first ice hotel, rebuilt annually with ice from the Torne River; sleeping in an ice-sculpted art suite is an unforgettable experience. Abisko National Park is the gold standard for aurora viewing, with a unique "blue hole" microclimate that ensures a high probability of clear skies, and the Aurora Sky Station cable car offers unobstructed views from the summit. The King's Trail (Kungsleden) is Sweden's most famous hiking route, with the Abisko section being the highlight. Jokkmokk is a hub for Sami culture, featuring reindeer racing and craft markets at the winter market in February. Classic experiences: dog sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer sledding, and Sami tent dinners. 📍 Skåne & Dalarna | Cultural Heritage and Pastoral Life Skåne is located at the southernmost tip of Sweden, featuring castles, white sandy beaches, and distinctive half-timbered towns, making it perfect for cycling exploration. The Turning Torso in Malmö is a landmark, just a half-hour train ride from Copenhagen; Lund is a thousand-year-old university town with a Romanesque cathedral worth seeing; Österlen has white beaches and art villages; Sofiero Castle Garden is stunning in spring and summer; in Helsingborg, you can climb the Kärnan tower to overlook the Danish coast. Dalarna represents traditional Swedish culture, where red wooden houses, Dala horses, and folk music originated. Visit Nusnäs to see Dala horses being hand-carved and painted, and even try it yourself; the Falun Copper Mine is a World Heritage site; the towns around Lake Siljan are picturesque, and the Midsummer festival celebrations are particularly grand. 📍 Gotland | Medieval Island Sweden's largest island. The entire Old Town of Visby is a World Heritage site, with intact medieval walls, cobblestone alleys, and church ruins. During Medieval Week in August, the whole city dresses up to travel back to the 14th century. Fårö Island is the spiritual home of director Ingmar Bergman, with stark and photogenic sea stacks. Cycle around the island, visit fishing villages, and watch the sunset—a summer vacation spot that is tranquil in winter. ✅ N Must-Do Experiences in Sweden 1. Hike the highlight section of the King's Trail: The Abisko to Kebnekaise section takes 2 days; you might encounter moose, and there are mountain huts for accommodation in summer. 2. Take the Inlandsbanan (Inland Line) train across the Arctic Circle: Coniferous forests and tranquil lakes outside the window, where solitude and romance coexist. 3. Go kayaking: In the Gothenburg or Stockholm archipelago, the view from the water is more interesting than exploring the city. 4. Attend the Jokkmokk Winter Market: The oldest Sami gathering in Northern Europe in early February; eat reindeer meat and watch sled dog racing. 5. Dog sledding or Icelandic horse riding: Traverse snowy forests near Kiruna for thrills you can't experience in the city. 🚗 Transportation Guide Train: SJ covers the whole country, with dense networks in the south and service to Kiruna in the north; book in advance for better deals. Discounts available for those under 26, students, and seniors. Bus: Flixbus and Vy offer great value, 30%–50% cheaper than trains, but slower, and schedules may be reduced on weekends and during summer. Ferry: Essential for visiting Gotland or island hopping; some road ferries are free, but book popular routes in advance. Car rental: Offers freedom but is expensive; road conditions are good, and there are no tolls. Drive on the right and keep headlights on at all times. Winter tires are mandatory from November to March. Watch out for moose and speed cameras. Bicycle: Southern Sweden is bike-friendly, with dedicated routes in Skåne and Småland; folding bikes can be taken on trains/buses. 🍽️ Dining & Accommodation Tips No mandatory tipping: You can round up a few kronor for good service, but no extra tipping is needed for hotel housekeeping or taxis. Bring your own sheets: STF hostels or budget accommodations often require you to bring your own bed sheets and duvet covers, or rent them on-site; be sure to check the booking terms. Age restrictions for alcohol: High-proof alcohol can only be purchased at Systembolaget; you must be 20 or older with a passport to enter, and they are closed on Sundays. Fika is a belief: Find a café anytime to sit down, have a cinnamon roll and coffee, and experience the daily ritual of the Swedes. 🗺️ Itinerary Reference 👉 Classic Southern Route: Stockholm 3 days (city + island hopping) → Train to Gothenburg 2 days (West Coast seafood) → Rent a car for Malmö/Lund 2 days (Skåne castles and pastoral life) → Return from Copenhagen. 👉 Winter Aurora Dream Route: Stockholm 2 days → Overnight train to Abisko 3 days (aurora hunting) → Kiruna 2 days (iron mine adventure, Icehotel, dog sledding) → Return. Save this guide and find an opportunity to go to Sweden to experience the aurora, islands, and the relaxation of fika~

Just back from Sweden✨ I really don't recommend just showing up in September or October!! Just returned from Sweden! Here's the honest truth: Don't just rush into Sweden in September–October without a plan! I'm not trying to discourage you! It's just that Sweden in autumn is the top-tier Nordic destination that 99% of tourists underestimate! You avoid the summer crowds and price hikes, as well as the extreme cold and blizzards of winter, unlocking the gentlest Nordic autumn colors and niche early-season auroras. But many people don't understand! The seasonal difference between northern and southern Sweden is huge, the weather is changeable, and the days are getting shorter. If you don't do your homework, you'll easily miss the stunning autumn scenery of layered forests and the most stress-free aurora-chasing window of the year! I've personally compiled a complete autumn guide—beginners can just copy my itinerary✅ 🌟 Why is September–October the ultimate travel season for Sweden? This is the golden period for niche travel in Sweden, offering the best value and the most stunning views! By September, Sweden has completely shed the summer hustle and bustle. The temperature is comfortable and cool, and the forests and islands are slowly turning caramel-colored. The mountains are layered in gold and red, maximizing the healing Nordic autumn scenery. As the nights gradually get longer, the north officially enters the aurora season. You can encounter gentle green lights without having to endure sub-zero temperatures. October is when the autumn scenery reaches its peak! Forests across the country are full of gold, and the lakes are clear and quiet, creating a cool, sophisticated atmosphere. High-altitude areas in the north occasionally see their first snow, creating a unique contrast between autumn forests and a light dusting of snow. With very few tourists and hotel prices dropping, you don't have to wait in line or rush around—it's the perfect way to unlock a tranquil Nordic experience. ⚠️ Important tip: Leaves fall faster in mid-to-late October, so the best window for autumn sightseeing is late September–mid-October! 📍 Must-visit hidden gems in Sweden for September–October 1. Gamla Stan (Old Town), Stockholm The soul of Sweden! The gentle autumn sun shines on the colorful European-style old buildings. Cobblestone streets paired with golden fallen leaves make it easy to snap retro Nordic photos. Stroll through the old town alleys, browse niche creative shops and waterfront walkways, and watch the night view of the old town in the evening—it's gentle and healing. 2. Vasa Museum A must-visit niche museum! It houses a complete shipwreck and artifacts, allowing you to immerse yourself in Sweden's centuries-old history. The exhibits are exquisite, and it's quiet and uncrowded. It's perfect for escaping the wind on a cloudy autumn day, offering an excellent experience. 3. Tyresta National Park The ultimate spot for autumn scenery! Large areas of primeval forest are rich with autumn vibes, and the lake water is crystal clear. Hiking along the forest trails, you'll see nothing but caramel colors. The air is fresh and healing—a secret spot to escape the city hustle and take great photos. 4. Malmö A gentle small city in the south! Niche, quiet, uncrowded, and beautiful. The autumn seaside breeze is soft, and the city parks are rich with autumn colors. The iconic Turning Torso building paired with the autumn streetscape is simple and sophisticated—perfect for a slow-paced city walk. 5. Abisko/Kiruna in the north (exclusive for aurora chasing) The top choice for beginners chasing the aurora in September–October! It's sparsely populated with very low light pollution. There's a high probability of clear skies in autumn, and the geomagnetic field is stable, giving you a high chance of encountering dancing green auroras. Occasionally, you might run into forests with the first snow—auroras, autumn forests, and light snow all in one frame—a unique sight. 🥐 Must-try autumn delicacies in Sweden The autumn food scene in Sweden is full of atmosphere, affordable, authentic, and won't disappoint! ✅ Cinnamon buns: Sweden's national dessert, soft and sweet, a staple for autumn afternoon tea. The taste in small street shops is super authentic. ✅ Swedish meatballs: A classic specialty meal, rich in flavor when paired with jam, suitable for all ages. ✅ Fresh deep-sea salmon: The meat is sweet, fresh, and low-fat, with great value. ✅ Autumn-limited cheese delicacies: During the Cheese Festival in October, you can taste various special Nordic cheeses. ⚠️ Tips for avoiding pitfalls and practical advice for traveling in Sweden in autumn 1. Dressing essentials (must-read) Sweden's autumn is windy with a huge temperature difference between day and night! It's comfortable and cool during the day, but cold in the morning and evening. Follow the three-layer dressing rule: quick-drying base layer + knitted middle layer + waterproof/windproof jacket. Prepare thin warm clothing for the north, and choose non-slip, comfortable shoes suitable for hiking and sightseeing. 2. North-South weather differences The south (Stockholm, Malmö) is autumn all the way, with no snow accumulation; only high-altitude areas in the north have sporadic first snow, so don't bring heavy down jackets to avoid unnecessary luggage. It occasionally rains in early autumn, so carry an umbrella. 3. Travel expenses Swedish Krona is the currency. Card payments are accepted everywhere, so there's no need to exchange a lot of cash. Souvenirs at tourist attractions are overpriced, so don't spend blindly. Most museums are closed on Mondays, so plan your itinerary in advance. 4. Aurora pitfalls Autumn auroras are gentler and not as intense as winter ones. Download an aurora forecast APP in advance, choose the suburbs with no light pollution, bring a camera tripod, and have spare batteries ready for low temperatures. ✨ A little note Sweden in September–October has no crowded throngs of people and no bone-chilling winter. It's caramel-colored forests, crystal-clear lakes, retro old towns, and gentle, romantic autumn auroras. I really don't recommend just showing up—seize the short autumn window to encounter the most healing and niche Nordic romance🍂

When thinking of places to see the Northern Lights in Sweden, many people might think of Kiruna first. But if you want an atmosphere that truly makes you feel like you've stepped into the middle of nature, Abisko is another name you should add to your list. Abisko is located in northern Sweden, in Swedish Lapland, about 100 kilometers from Kiruna and near Abisko National Park. It's an area with mountains, lakes, birch forests, and stunning Arctic landscapes. The highlight here is the vastness and darkness of the sky, making Abisko one of the most famous places to see the Northern Lights, especially during months with long, dark nights. The most coveted image is the green light slowly appearing above the mountains and Lake Torneträsk. But Abisko isn't just about the Northern Lights. During the day, you can stroll through Abisko National Park, with nature trails, mountain views, valleys, and Abisko Canyon, as well as the Kungsleden trail which starts at the Abisko Turiststation. If you visit during the summer, the atmosphere changes completely, as you can experience the midnight sun. In winter, it becomes a white world with snow, outdoor activities, and long nights perfect for Northern Lights hunting. Another highlight is the Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja, where you can take a cable car to enjoy stunning views of the mountains and the night sky. Getting there isn't as difficult as you might think. Abisko has a train station and is accessible from Kiruna. The Abisko Turist station is near the tourist information center and the STF (Skytrain and Skytrain Foundation) tourist station. However, if your main goal is to see the Northern Lights, it's important to understand that there's no guarantee of seeing them 100%, as it's a natural phenomenon. The chances of seeing them depend on whether the sky is clear, dark, or if sunlight is active. Therefore, staying several nights will significantly increase your chances compared to a single visit. And if you're going during winter, pack warm clothing, as the Arctic weather is quite harsh 🥶 Abisko is perfect for those who want to see a different side of Sweden. It's not Stockholm with its beautiful buildings. It's not a big city with shops and museums. Instead, it's a small village with mountains, lakes, snow, tranquility, and a sky full of stars. Hike during the day. Return to rest in the evening. At night, go out and gaze at the sky. And if you're lucky… You might witness a breathtaking sight of green lights dancing above the mountains that you'll remember for a long time 💚 #Abisko #SwedishLapland #Sweden #NorthernLights #TravelSweden

Kärkevagge, or "Rock Valley," is a stunning 5.5 km rift located west of Abisko. It leads to Trollsjön (Rissájávri), sitting at 815m, which is Sweden’s clearest lake with an incredible 37m visibility. While STF offers a guided 12 km hike (7.5 hours, ±400m elevation) for 875 SEK for members, I opted for a solo hike in July. I took the Norrtåg from Kiruna to Abisko Östra (250 SEK) and stayed at the STF Abisko dorm (420 SEK). If you know the start at Låkta, you can hike for free—I set off at 7 a.m. to beat the crowds. The first 2 km from Låkta are magical: birch trees give way to ancient rock, Sphagnum moss carpets the boulder seeps, and Racomitrium clings to the gneiss, often shrouded in fog until 9 a.m. The valley floor is a wild landscape of boulders left behind by the last ice age, hiding roughly 3,000 caves. Moss thrives only where the meltwater lingers. Lessons learned: I once tried a solo hike in September without the STF bus. The Låkta stop is unstaffed, so I missed the group and faced 50 km/h winds at Trollsjön. Note: swimming is strictly banned to protect the sterile lake. Another mistake: wearing trail runners. The moss-drip makes the boulders incredibly slick; I rolled my ankle at the delta and was only saved by my trekking poles. Invest in 1,200 SEK boots. Also, while the kiosk takes cards for a 45 SEK cinnamon bun, the honor box at the Trollsjön rest bench is cash only. Pro-tip: Grab a 45 SEK cinnamon bun at STF Abisko, but skip the pricey 195 SEK lunch pack. Bring 2.5L of water and a good shell jacket—even in summer, it’s about 6°C up there. Local Rules: Self-hiking is free, but the STF guide is 875 SEK. No swimming in Trollsjön, no drones near reindeer, and stay on the marked trails. The moss on the gneiss is 9,000 years old—do not step on it! Final thoughts: Kärkevagge is a hidden gem that most aurora hunters overlook. The birch-to-gneiss transition at Låkta is a peaceful 30-minute walk without the Trollsjön crowds. Should STF add a 20 SEK honor box at Låkta for trail maintenance, or keep the 875 SEK flat fee for guides? I’d support the honor box. Would you travel to 68°N for an arctic rift and a lake so clear you can see 37 meters down?

Sweden has Stockholm and Gothenburg. But above the Arctic Circle lies a town that is being moved — literally. Kiruna is a mining settlement in the far north, surrounded by snow, ice, and the dancing northern lights. The town is relocating because the mine beneath it is expanding. Here is how to explore this Arctic frontier and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Icehotel at Dawn: Art Made of Frozen Water The Icehotel in nearby Jukkasjärvi is the world's first hotel made entirely of ice and snow. Each year, artists from around the world carve the rooms, the chapel, and the bar. By 10 AM, the tour groups arrive. Come at opening time instead. The light filters through the ice. The carvings glow. You will walk through a palace of frozen art with only the sound of your breath and the crunch of snow underfoot. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline guide for Kiruna. It explains the history of the Icehotel and leads you through the art suites. The best photos are from the main hall at sunrise, when the ice glows blue. 2. The Mine: The Reason the Town Exists Kiruna's iron ore mine is one of the largest in the world. The tour takes you underground, into the tunnels where miners work. The scale is staggering. The history is fascinating. The mine is also the reason the town is moving — the tunnels threaten the ground beneath Kiruna. Come early. The tours are popular, and the underground cold is bracing. Money Hack: Book your mine tour on Trip.com before you go. The tours sell out in peak season, and booking online saves time. Some packages include a visit to the town's historic church, which will be moved piece by piece to the new town center. 3. The Northern Lights: A Sky Full of Fire Kiruna is one of the best places on Earth to see the aurora borealis. From September to March, the lights appear without warning, swirling across the sky in shades of green, purple, and pink. The best viewing is away from town. The silence is profound. Come late. The lights are most active after midnight. Budget Advice: Skip the expensive guided tours. Rent a car or take a bus to a dark spot outside town. The lights are free. Check the aurora forecast before you go. Book a "Northern Lights Snowmobile Tour" on Trip.com only if you want an adventure. Otherwise, the public bus to Abisko works perfectly. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Arctic Swedish Arctic food is hearty and warming. Try Reindeer — served as steak or stew, with lingonberries. Order Arctic Char — a cold-water fish, grilled or smoked. And do not miss Cloudberry Jam — a golden berry that grows only in the far north. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive hotel restaurants. Walk into the town center and find SPiS Mat & Dryck or Camp Ripan, where locals eat. The food is authentic, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of local beer when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the town center. Look for something on Bergmästaregatan or near the church. You will sleep in a warm room with a view of the snowy streets, the sound of snowplows at dawn, and the chance of northern lights above. The evenings are quiet, and the air is crisp. Conclusion: Kiruna is not a place you stumble upon. It is a place you journey to. It is a town of ice and iron, of northern lights and midnight sun. It is a place where the earth itself is shifting, and the people are adapting. Sweden is a country of design and nature, but Kiruna is its Arctic soul. Come and stand under the lights. The north is waiting. #trip_com #Sweden #Kiruna #kirunatravel #SwedenHiddenGems #ArcticCircle #NorthernLights #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #travelsweden #Icehotel #IronMine #Lapland #MidnightSun #HiddenScandinavia

#bucketlistdestinations I joined the STF guided hike from Abisko Turiststation (725 SEK, includes transport to Låkta, max 8 people, book 3 days ahead or by 19:00 the prior day). Kärkevagge is a 5.5 km rift valley—12 km round trip, ±400 m, 7.5 hours. The mossy arctic-alpine zones sit where meltwater seeps from the boulder field: lush green cushions of Tomentypnum moss, dwarf birch (Betula nana) waist-high in places, and Trollsjön (Rissájávri) at the end—37 m visibility, 815 m altitude. Abisko is on the Kiruna–Narvik railway (SJ tickets ~300 SEK from Kiruna). STF hut dorm 350–500 SEK, card ok. The valley floor is bare rock and boulders; the moss lives on the damp edges. No picking, no drone (STF rules), no fire above the tree line. Mistake: I wore a softshell without rain pants—Kärkevagge makes its own weather, hail at noon. Pack a 10,000 mm shell. Kindness beat: our guide Tomas stopped at a moss cushion and said “det är inte gräs, det är 300 år” (it’s not grass, it’s 300 years). He made us step around it, not on it. When the landscape is older than your country, who owns the footprint?

#easytravelpost Lapporten ("the Reindeer Gate") is the U-shaped notch west of Abisko, best seen from Björkliden. I took Norrtåg to Björkliden (not Abisko—Björkliden is 20 min further, 250 SEK from Kiruna), slept at Hotel Fjället (≈1,400 SEK/night), rode the summer chairlift (≈150 SEK one-way, card, 10:00–16:00 Jul–Aug) to the mid-station. The cliff walk runs the southern lip of the Lapporten valley: 4 km one-way to the rim where the Torneträsk lies 300 m below and the notch frames the Kebnekaise massif. The walk is unmarked above the lift line—cairns, then open fell. I hit the rim at 09:00, midnight-sun clarity in July, no wind. Björkliden is quieter than Abisko for aurora in winter and less busy for the same view. Mistake: I rode the lift down at 15:30 and it shut at 16:00—tight; walk down if unsure (1 hr). Another: I wore a t-shirt in July at the rim and the wind was 8°C; shell always. Would you ride the Björkliden chairlift up and walk the Lapporten rim, or hike from the E10 road-end for the full valley climb?

#kindnessontheroad took the Norrtåg train to Abisko Östra, slept at STF Abisko Turiststation, and started the Kungsleden north stage at 9 AM. The 105 km Abisko–Kebnekaise section normally takes 5–6 days; I walked the first 3 days to test my knees. Day one Abisko to Abiskojaure (fine hut, 250 SEK non-member), day two across the Kårsavagge side valley, day three over Tjäktja pass (1,105 m) down to Tjäktja hut, then on toward Kebnekaise Mountain Station. The birch forest near Abisko is waist-high and gold in September; above the tree line it is boardwalk over mire every 200 m. STF huts take card, cost 400–500 SEK/night non-member, and sell instant mash and cinnamon buns. Reindeer move out of your way slowly. A Finnish hiker lent me his tent peg puller when mine bent — that is the Kungsleden etiquette. Midges in July are violent; bring face net. Which direction would you walk Kungsleden — north to south for the drama, or reverse for solitude?

#kindnessontheroad Deep in the Swedish Lapland forests near Kiruna, I joined a small-group reindeer sledding tour arranged through a local Sami family. The landscape was pure arctic white, punctuated only by the occasional dark green spruce. After a short ride through the snow-laden woods, we gathered around an open fire pit behind the farm’s main cabin. The reindeer were tethered nearby, calmly chewing on lichen. As the guide explained traditional Sami herding techniques, the farm owner—a middle-aged man named Lars—suddenly walked over to a moss-covered tree stump. Using a small knife, he scraped off handfuls of gray-green reindeer moss (Cladonia rangiferina). Without explanation, he handed me a generous clump. “For luck,” he said in accented English. Then he showed me how to crush it slightly between my palms to release its faint, earthy scent before tossing it near the herd. The reindeer perked up immediately, ambling over to nibble at the moss. Lars explained that during harsh winters, this specific lichen is vital for reindeer survival, and sharing it with visitors is a symbolic gesture of welcoming them into the circle of care. I later learned that many commercial tours sell “reindeer food” packets for upwards of 50 SEK, but Lars simply gave it away. This small act stuck with me because it reflected genuine cultural pride rather than a sales pitch. If you’re planning a Lapland trip, skip the overpriced “Arctic experiences” in Abisko’s tourist hubs and head to smaller family-run farms outside Kiruna or Jukkasjärvi. Book directly via email if possible—you’ll pay less and get more authentic interactions. Dress in true arctic gear: wool base layers, down mid-layers, and a windproof outer shell. Cotton kills in -20°C weather. And bring high-energy snacks like nuts or dried fruit; Lars mentioned that tourists often underestimate how many calories the cold burns. Have you ever received a gift while traveling that wasn’t about money, but about meanin

Day 4: A Day of Movement We started the morning surrounded by snow in Abisko, then spent the rest of the day on the road from Narvik to Svolvær. When there is heavy snowfall, the train from Abisko to Narvik may be suspended and replaced by a bus service. It’s important to check carefully, as the pickup point for the bus is different from the train station. There are monitor screens at STF accommodations and at the train station that provide real-time updates. We took a train from Abisko to Narvik, then transferred to bus no. 300 to Svolvær. You can pay the bus fare directly to the driver. The bus terminal in Narvik is quite small, just a simple platform located right next to a shopping mall. You can wait inside the mall comfortably. There are luggage lockers at the bus station, but as I mentioned earlier, they aren’t really suitable for large suitcases, which can be a bit inconvenient when traveling with the large luggage. We got off the bus at Svolvær sentrum (Lofotgata) and took a short walk to the hotel. 🏨 Anker Brygge : Room no.206 ✅️Recommendation => If I could change one thing about this trip, I would adjust the plan by flying from Oslo to Narvik and staying in Narvik for one night. I’d leave my large luggage at the hotel and pack only the essentials in a small backpack. From there, I would take a train to Abisko for a short visit, then return to Narvik afterward. Traveling with large suitcases on the train wasn’t very convenient, so this adjustment would make the journey much more comfortable and flexible. =>The journey from Narvik to Svolvær takes about four and a half hours. It’s best to travel during the day, as you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. =>When we were looking for a place to stay in Lofoten, we came across another interesting option—Reinefjorden Sjøhus🏨. It’s located right by the fjord near Hamnøy, offering traditional fisherman cabins with stunning views of the mountains and sea. The place feels more peaceful and immersive—perfect if you want to truly experience the nature of Lofoten rather than stay in a town. 📆My Itinerary (18-28 Oct 2025) Day1:Oslo 🇳🇴 Day2: Stockholm 🇸🇪 Day3: Kiruna 🇸🇪 Day4: Abisko 🇸🇪 Day5: Abisko 🇸🇪-Narvik 🇳🇴 Day6: Lofoten 🇳🇴 Day7: Havila voyage 🇳🇴 Day8: Tromso 🇳🇴 Day9: Bergen 🇳🇴 Day10: Flam 🇳🇴 Day11: Oslo 🇳🇴 🌏🗺🧭🛳✈️ #abisko #narvik #DouubleUUGoToNorSwe

Day 4: The bucket list ✅️ Main highlight of the trip ✨ Stayed here for 2 nights and got lucky with the Northern Lights! Even with Kp 2–3, the clear sky made them super visible. In October, there aren’t many activities available yet, but you can still hike along the Kungsleden trail or walk to Lake Torneträsk. 🏨 STF Abisko Turiststation 📌Tips: => Abisko is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights because of the “blue hole” effect🌟—an area of clearer sky that gives you a higher chance of good visibility compared to other locations. However, everything still depends on the weather. During our trip, we only saw the Northern Lights on the first night. The next night it snowed, and the forecast showed cloudy skies for the rest of the week. =>You can reach Abisko from either Kiruna or Narvik, as it is located close to the Norwegian border. In Abisko, there are two train stations: Abisko Tourist Station – This area has only one main accommodation, STF Abisko Turiststation, and it is the closest to Aurora Sky Station. However, it’s not necessary to go up to the Sky Station to see the Northern Lights—you can easily watch them from your accommodation. The area near the lake is already dark enough. Abisko Östra Station – This area has several guesthouses to choose from, offering more accommodation options. =>At STF Abisko Turiststation, there are 3 types of accommodation: 🛏️ 1. Hostel (Budget option) You pay for the room plus extra fees for: · Bed linen · Room cleaning You can avoid these fees if you bring your own Shared facilities (kitchen, laundry, etc.) 🏨 2. Hotel (Private room) · Private bathroom included · Bed linen and cleaning are included in the price · Breakfast is also included Costs almost twice as much as the hostel Rooms are located in the main building No kitchen or laundry in the building, but you can use the hostel facilities 👉 If you’re traveling as a pair, this option can be the best value, especially if you book the entry-level room. 🏡 3. Cabin Multiple rooms and beds Suitable for groups or families More space and privacy compared to the hostel 📆My Itinerary (18-28 Oct 2025) Day1:Oslo 🇳🇴 Day2: Stockholm 🇸🇪 Day3: Kiruna 🇸🇪 Day4: Abisko 🇸🇪 Day5: Abisko 🇸🇪-Narvik 🇳🇴 Day6: Lofoten 🇳🇴 Day7: Havila voyage 🇳🇴 Day8: Tromso 🇳🇴 Day9: Bergen 🇳🇴 Day10: Flam 🇳🇴 Day11: Oslo 🇳🇴 🌏🗺🧭🛳✈️#abisko #sweden #northernlights #douubleuugotonorswe #douubleuugototheplanet

Heading further north into the Arctic Circle at 66°N. Taking a pre-booked taxi from Kiruna Airport straight to Abisko, Sweden, home to the clearest skies in Scandinavia. Thanks to its prime geographical location and stable weather conditions, you can catch the Northern Lights in Abisko on 159 out of 212 nights a year—a staggering 75% chance!

The five Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland) offer diverse experiences. This guide helps you grasp the essentials and plan your trip with ease. I. Core Choices: Which country suits you best? · **Norway:** King of natural scenery. Highlights include fjords (Bergen, Stavanger), the three iconic rock formations (Preikestolen/Kjeragbolten/Trolltunga), and the Lofoten Islands. Suitable for outdoor enthusiasts and photography aficionados. · **Iceland:** An otherworldly experience. Features include the Ring Road (Route 1), the Northern Lights, blue ice caves, and black sand beaches. Ideal for adventurers seeking unique and extreme landscapes. · **Finland:** Fairytales and design. Highlights include Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi, glass igloos for viewing the Northern Lights, and Helsinki's design district. Suitable for families and couples. · **Sweden:** Urban aesthetics. Capital Stockholm (Metro art, Old Town), and the southern province of Skåne. Suitable for city wanderers and design enthusiasts. · **Denmark:** Hygge lifestyle. Copenhagen (Nyhall, Organ Church), Legoland. Suitable for leisure travel and food lovers. II. Classic Route Recommendations · Classic Fjords + City Route (7-10 days): Copenhagen/Stockholm → Norway in a Nutshell (Oslo-Bergen) → Bergen. · Ultimate Iceland Ring Road Route (8-12 days): Reykjavik → Golden Circle → South Coast (Vik Black Sand Beach, Glacier Lagoon) → East Fjords → Lake Mývatn → Akureyri. · Aurora Chasing Route (Winter, 7-9 days): Sweden + Finland: Fly to Stockholm → Kiruna (Ice Hotel) → Abisko → Rovaniemi, Finland → Glass Igloo Area. III. Budget and Season · Best Season: · May-September (Peak Season): Pleasant climate, long days. The Norwegian fjords and Icelandic inland are only open during this time, perfect for self-driving. · October to March (Off-season): Focus on the Northern Lights, snow and ice activities (icebreakers, dog sledding), and Finnish glass igloos. Tromsø, Norway, is also a popular Northern Lights destination. · Budget (per person/day): · Budget: 800-1200 RMB (hostel + self-catering). · Comfort: 2000-3500 RMB (mid-range hotel + dining out). · Luxury: From 5000 RMB. IV. Key Pre-Trip Preparations · Visa: Schengen visa. Apply to the country where you will stay the longest. It is recommended to book 1-2 months in advance. · Currency: None of the five countries are in the Eurozone, but credit cards are accepted nationwide; cash is not required. · Transportation: · Airplane: For long distances, Scandinavian Airlines or Norwegian Air are recommended; domestic flights are frequent. · Train/Ferry: Trains between cities are comfortable; for fjord areas, ferries are necessary; Scandinavian cruises offer a well-established experience. · Clothing: Follow the "onion layering" method. Even in summer, a windproof and rainproof jacket is necessary. V. Avoidances and Tips 1. Alcohol Control: High alcohol taxes and restricted sales. Supermarkets only sell low-alcohol beer; for spirits, go to state-run liquor stores like Bolaget or Vinmonopolet, and pay attention to their opening hours. 2. Dining: Eating out is expensive. A typical meal costs around 200-400 RMB per person. Consider buffet lunches (cheaper than dinner), supermarket sandwiches (like REMA 1000 or Lidl), or trying hot dog stands. 3. Driving: In Norwegian fjords, be aware of ferry connections; in Iceland during winter, rent a 4WD vehicle and check the weather forecast regularly. 4. Accommodation: It's recommended to book apartments or cabins with kitchens in advance. Norway and Finland offer excellent experiences.
