Nestled in Zao Onsen, Yamagata, these frost-covered trees transform into towering, otherworldly figures during the peak of winter. The journey up the Zao Ropeway was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the snow-covered mountains and gradually revealing the surreal landscape of frozen trees. As I stepped out onto the mountaintop, I was instantly surrounded by giant white formations, shaped by the relentless combination of icy winds and snowfall. The eerie silence of the highlands, broken only by the soft crunch of snow underfoot, added to the mystical atmosphere. As the evening approached, the snow monsters were illuminated with colorful lights, casting an ethereal glow over the landscape—a truly mesmerizing sight! Beyond the stunning views, I also enjoyed skiing down Zao’s slopes, where the sight of the snow monsters lining the trails made it feel like I was gliding through an enchanted forest. After a chilly day in the snow, soaking in Zao’s natural onsen was the perfect way to relax, with the steamy hot waters melting away the winter cold. It is recommended to travel by private car because it is quite far from public transportation. The view of the waterfall from the old stone bridge called Kinzan, which is still in use, is impressive. The parking lot is at the foot of the bridge. There is a small path along the river. You can walk to see the waterfall.

I was fascinated by this mountain pass road, paved with moss-covered tuff stone. During alternate attendance, feudal lord processions passed by, during the Seinan War, cannons and people and horses passed by, and in daily life, the evidence of the many people and baggage that passed by remains as scratches and dents on the stone pavement, and these traces lead to imaginations of the distant past. Kanayama Bridge was built for gold mining. After crossing the bridge and descending to the riverbank, you can see Kanayama Bridge and the waterfall. I think you can get a full view of the waterfall if you get into the river, but this was the best angle I could get. Nevertheless, the beautiful structure built around 1897 still remains, and there is a promenade where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll. You can feel the history in the old moss-covered stone monument. The park has a campground, an athletic field, and a forest learning exhibition hall, making it a place to relax and learn while enjoying nature. Access: Approximately 12km from Mizobe Kagoshima Airport IC on the Kyushu Expressway. It's nice to be surrounded by nature and enjoy a slow life.
