In late November 2017, I planned a day trip to Zugspitze from Munich. Even though it was late autumn, the seasonal transition meant the foot of the mountain still showcased vibrant autumn colors, while the summit was already blanketed in pristine white snow. In just one day, I got to experience two entirely different seasonal landscapes. For nature lovers, Zugspitze is absolutely a must-visit destination in Bavaria. Introduction to Germany's Highest Peak: Zugspitze Standing at an elevation of 2,962 meters, Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany, nestled right on the border between Germany and Austria. On a clear day at the summit, you can gaze out over more than 400 Alpine peaks, catching glimpses of mountain ranges spanning four countries at once: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. Because of this, it’s celebrated as one of the most breathtaking observation decks in all of Germany. Zugspitze has a unique charm in every season. It's a world-renowned ski resort in the winter, and a haven for hiking and taking in alpine vistas during the summer. By visiting in late November, I was lucky enough to catch the first snow of the season. The summit was a spectacular winter wonderland, picture-perfect against the bright blue sky like a postcard. ⸻ Getting There from Munich We started our morning bright and early, hopping on a Deutsche Bahn (DB) train from Munich Central Station (München Hbf) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a smooth ride that takes about an hour and a half. Upon arrival, we transferred to the famous Zugspitze cog railway (Zugspitzbahn) to head into the mountains. There are two classic ways to conquer Zugspitze: · Ride the historic cog railway through forests and long tunnels up to the Zugspitze glacier plateau, then catch a cable car to the summit. · Head to Eibsee and take the massive, modern aerial cableway straight to the top, reaching the summit in just about 10 minutes. Sadly, our day trip schedule was a bit tight, so we could only make a quick stop for photos. The early morning sun was just too harsh, making the entire Obersee look super hazy. It wasn't until we hiked around the lake and got closer to the milk cabin that we started to see the gorgeous gradient blue of the water. That's when the true beauty of Königssee finally hit me. Sitting by the water, watching the little ducks and taking in the lake's reflection—an almost surreal hue washed over everything. In the summer, the milk cabin is absolutely packed. No cash😩😩😩 couldn't buy a single thing. 😭😭 By the time the midday sun hit, that gradient color was gone, though the water near the shore remained crystal clear. The time of day and lighting seriously make or break your Königssee experience‼️ Let me give a shoutout to the hotel we stayed at in the little town of Berchtesgaden. Hotel Edelweiss You get a direct view of the Alps right from the room. Right in the heart of town. The rooftop spa pool, swimming pool, and restaurant all offer breathtaking mountain views. Along the way, you'll hear the babbling of streams and smell the pine scent from the towering ancient trees—it really feels like walking into a forest scene from "Snow White"! The dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves is so dreamy~ Remember to wear non-slip shoes, as some sections can be slippery. 💦 Hintersee Hidden Gem A blue-green lake hidden deep in the forest! From June–September, you can row transparent boats, and in winter, when the lake freezes over, it looks like a giant sapphire. I traveled from Innsbruck by regional train (25 min, €9.40), strolled into Mittenwald’s Obermarkt, and paid €6 for the Geigenbau- und Heimatmuseum—three rooms filled with Mathias Klotz violins, plane shavings, and a rare 1700 bow. I was too busy looking out the window. 🏔️ Welcome to Schafberg The journey begins in the beautiful lakeside town of St. Wolfgang. At first, everything feels calm and peaceful. Traditional Austrian houses. Flower-filled balconies. Church towers. The blue waters of Lake Wolfgang stretching into the distance. Then you see the little mountain train waiting at the station. It looks almost like something from another era. And that's when the adventure really begins. 🚂 The Little Train That Climbs the Mountain The Schafberg Railway is not an ordinary train ride. It's a cog railway, designed specifically to climb steep mountain terrain. As the train slowly makes its way uphill, the landscape outside the window changes. The village disappears behind you. Take some time to walk around. The summit area offers several viewpoints, and even a short walk can lead to completely different perspectives. One moment you're looking toward the lakes. Turn around and you're facing another mountain range. Walk a little further and suddenly the clouds are drifting below you. This is one of those places where having extra time makes the experience much better. ☁️ When the Clouds Move In Of course, mountain weather can change quickly. One minute you can have a clear panoramic view... and a little later, clouds can roll across the summit. At first, I was disappointed. But then I realized it created a completely different atmosphere. The mountains disappear into the mist. The landscape becomes quiet. And the summit suddenly feels mysterious and almost dreamlike. So even if the weather isn't perfect, don't assume the experience is ruined. Sometimes the clouds make the mountain even more beautiful. 🌿 The Austrian Alps Feel Different Up Here After exploring Salzburg and Hallstatt, Schafberg gave me a completely different perspective on the region. From the streets of Salzburg, the mountains are something you look toward. From Hallstatt, they're part of the village landscape. But from Schafberg, you're looking down at the entire alpine world. Lakes, villages, forests and mountains all become part of one giant panorama. It's a completely different way to experience Austria. 🚂 The Ride Down Is Beautiful Too One of the easiest mistakes would be thinking that the best part is only the journey up. The ride back down offers a completely different perspective. Instead of looking toward the summit, you're now looking toward the lakes and valleys below. The train slowly descends through the landscape. And as you get lower, the villages gradually become larger again. It's almost like watching the scenery reverse itself. 🌅 Try to Choose a Clear Day If your main reason for visiting Schafberg is the panoramic view, weather matters. A clear day can make an enormous difference. When the skies are open, you can see much farther across the lakes and surrounding mountains. Early morning can also be beautiful, especially when the landscape is still quiet and the air is clear. But even on a partly cloudy day, the scenery can still be spectacular. My advice? Check the mountain weather before you go, but don't be discouraged by a few clouds. 🏡 St. Wolfgang Is Worth Exploring Too Don't forget about the town at the bottom of the mountain. St. Wolfgang is beautiful in its own right. The lakeside setting, traditional architecture and relaxed atmosphere make it a lovely place to spend some time before or after the train ride. Walk through the old streets. Have a coffee. Look at the lake. And watch the mountains rising behind the town.
