Located just outside Alta in the Norwegian Arctic, Sorrisniva Igloo is a year-round resort run by the family that has lived here since 1880 and their descendants, offering guests quality accommodations in new Arctic wilderness lodges, unique stays in the world's northernmost igloo hotel, world-renowned cuisine and fine dining experiences, and a variety of wilderness adventures that vary greatly from one Arctic season to the next. My personal experience with the Ice House Hotel is that it’s okay to look at it, but for me, staying here is just asking for trouble. The feeling over there was like the house in Suzhou where I lived in my childhood. When it was frozen outside in the winter, the water in the cups at home would also be frozen the next morning. So I have experienced this before, and it is not a very comfortable thing. Alta may not be the biggest city in Northern Norway, but it has such a calm, beautiful atmosphere. It is a great place for anyone who loves nature, Nordic food, winter activities, and a slower kind of travel. One of the places I stayed at was Trasti & Trine, and I really loved the atmosphere there. It is a cozy Nordic-style lodge surrounded by nature, and it is also known for dog sledding experiences. Unfortunately, when I visited that year, the snow arrived later than usual, so I could not try the dog sledding. The food here was one of the highlights. We had a Nordic-style course meal made with local ingredients, and it was delicious. I would even recommend coming here just for the restaurant, even if you are not staying overnight. The whole experience felt warm, local, and very Alta. Another thing I loved about staying here was how close it was to nature. There are walking routes where you can stroll through the forest and down toward the river. We also see a little bit of the Northern Lights from here. Another must-visit place in Alta is Alta Museum. I was really impressed by this museum. It is not only an indoor museum, but also a huge outdoor area where you can walk along paths and see ancient rock carvings that date back thousands of years. The rock art in Alta is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list, and it shows scenes from the lives of prehistoric hunter-gatherer people in the Arctic. I would recommend giving Alta Museum a full day . The outdoor walking route is spacious and beautiful, with views over the fjord and surrounding nature. There is also a café where you can sit, rest, and enjoy the view after walking around. The Cathedral of the Northern Lights is another landmark you should not miss. This modern church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Alta. Its design was inspired by the movement of the Northern Lights, with a soft, spiral-like shape that feels very elegant and unique. Alta is also a great base for Arctic activities. Depending on the season, you can join activities such as dog sledding, Northern Lights tours, snowmobile trips, and whale watching. Getting around Alta is quite easy. Local buses are operated by Snelandia, and you can either pay on board or use the Snelandia Mobillett app to buy tickets. From start to finish, everything was professionally run, well explained, and genuinely memorable. The experience began with a thorough introduction from the staff, who were incredibly informative and clearly passionate about what they do. We were shown how to prepare and kit up our huskies ourselves, which immediately made the experience feel more hands-on and authentic rather than something you simply sit back and watch. All cold-weather clothing was provided by Trasti & Trine, which was a huge plus and meant we were warm and comfortable throughout. Once ready, we set off as part of a group, following a lead guide through the Arctic landscape. I controlled our sled myself, while my two children sat on the sled for the entire journey, which made it both exciting and family-friendly. The route took us through beautiful local scenery, giving a real sense of the surrounding wilderness and the scale of the area around Alta. Being able to actively steer the sled added a real sense of involvement and made the experience far more immersive. After the sledding, we gathered around an open fire where we were served hot drinks and brownies. It was the perfect way to warm up, relax, and reflect on what we’d just experienced, while chatting with staff and other participants. The Alta Fjord is 38 km long and is a fjord in Troms-Finnmark county in the Norwegian Arctic. The fjord extends from Alta in the south to the islands of Schejen and Seland, and has two branches in its southern part, the 30-kilometer-long Langfjord and the 8-kilometer-long Kafjord. There is also a 200-kilometer-long Altava River that flows through the city of Altafjord and into the Altafjord. It splits into two other fjords at Schein Island and Seland Island, and then flows into the Norwegian Sea. The polar weather here is not as bad as people who have never been there understand. For example, during the polar night, it is not completely dark, but just because the sun is always below the horizon during that period, the sky will never be very bright. Picture 9 was taken at 10:12 on November 23, 2015, and Picture 10 was taken at 17:00 on January 29, 2017. If it was November or December, it would have been dark by 5pm. The opposite is true during the polar day. The sun is always above the horizon and the sky is never completely dark. The darkest time is when the sun is closest to the horizon, which is before the sunset we normally see.
