Passing on the Famous "Mil Toast" Our first stop was Mil Toast, a wildly famous café blowing up on social media for its steamed bread. We pictured an elegant morning eating delicious bread to kickstart the day... but were totally shocked when we got there. A massive line of Japanese tourists stretched as far as the eye could see...! I nearly passed out wondering how many hours it would take, so to make the most of our limited travel time, we sadly decided to skip it this time. 🥯 A Fateful Encounter! Heading Next Door to the Gorgeous Bagel Shop "ONJISIM" While looking around trying to figure out our next move, we spotted a seriously chic-looking spot right next door. It turned out to be "ONJISIM," a specialty bagel shop using Korean-grown wheat and potatoes. Stepping inside, we were instantly mesmerized by the modern space that beautifully incorporated a traditional Hanok structure. The best part was the incredible vibe—it felt like hanging out in a lush green garden indoors. Gorgeous floral arrangements and a large tree gave us a warm welcome, instantly melting away our travel fatigue. 🫖 Here’s What We Ordered! Steep Tourist Prices, But How Did It Taste? The display case was lined with a massive variety of stunning bagels—just trying to choose one was pure joy. I ended up ordering the chic "BLACK SESAME Bagel" and a warm bowl of "MUSHROOM CREAM SOUP." The total came out to 15,500 KRW. Honestly, my first thought was, "Wow, those are some steep tourist prices for breakfast...!" But the moment I took a bite, the high level of satisfaction totally justified the cost. 📍In the morning, I left my hotel near Dongmyo and headed to Seochon Hanok Village using Naver Map. It took about 30 minutes by bus, but I quickly realized that most shops don't open until 11:00 AM or 1:00 PM. So, I hurried over to Bukchon Hanok Village by bus instead. Seochon Hanok Village is quite peaceful with charming local shopping streets. I think it's best to pick out the shops you want to visit in advance and head there around noon. There's a bus stop if you walk along the wall on the west side of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Taking the bus around the north side for about three stops brings you near the Seochon Hanok Village area. However, I ended up climbing some steep, narrow stairs to reach the Hanok area (maybe there was a better route?). 🏖️ Recommended Spots 📸 Bukchon Hanok Village The slope on the Anguk Station side is pretty gentle, but it gets incredibly steep if you come from the opposite direction. Still, you get a fantastic view of Namsan Tower and a beautiful, wide-open sky. I picked up a paper map at the Seoul Hiking Tourism Center (Bugaksan Mountain) 서울 등산관광센터 북악산. The staff kindly gave me detailed directions on how to navigate Bukchon Hanok Village. There are eight designated photo spots, and apparently, the most famous one is the slope between spots 5 and 6. When I got there, there was a huge line of people waiting to take selfies. Believe it or not, you can actually go inside the traditional houses at Baek Inje's House and the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center! Both are fantastic hidden gems. The former seems to require a tour reservation, while the latter serves as a lovely rest area for tourists. There's a famous spot right by the Bukchon Traditional Culture Center (when I passed by around 1:00 PM on a Friday, some items were sold out, but most were still available). ☕️ Pyunkang Yul Flagship & Tea House 편강 율 플래그십&티하우스 This is a wonderful hidden gem of a cafe where you can enjoy coffee, herbal tea, and sweet sets while taking in the lush greenery. Located in the southern part of downtown Anguo, the Yaowang Temple is an ancient architectural complex dedicated to the medical sages throughout history. Originally named "Piwang Shenge," it was first built during the Eastern Han Dynasty and later expanded and rebuilt during the Taiping Xingguo period (976–984) of the Northern Song Dynasty. The temple faces west and consists of 3 courtyards—the front, middle, and rear—along with 2 side courtyards. It features 17 individual buildings, including the Horse Hall, Yaowang Tomb Pavilion, Main Hall, Rear Hall, Hall of Famous Doctors, Stele Room, and Bell and Drum Towers, covering a total area of over 3,200 square meters. The memorial archway outside the temple gate is a double-eaved, hip-roofed structure covered with yellow glazed tiles, featuring 3 bays, 4 pillars, and colorful dougong brackets. The Yaowang Tomb Pavilion is located in the middle courtyard. The tomb is pavilion-style with a wooden arched ridge and a glazed tile roof, featuring an exquisite and unique design rich in ethnic characteristics. The tombstone is inscribed with "Tomb of the Imperial-Conferred Mingling Zhaohui Xianwang." It’s best to give yourself plenty of time. Many people opt for a taxi right to the entrance, so consider that if you're willing to spend a bit extra. I arrived around 7:30 AM on a Saturday, and there were already over 10 groups in line. Check in at the kiosk outside and wait for your number to be called. I was called just after 8:30 AM and made it in with the first group. (Even for takeout, you need to register the same way, though it looked like those orders were called a bit sooner.) The store was packed with people and a massive selection of mouth-watering bagels. Grab a tray and tongs, join the line, pick your favorites, and head to the counter. If you want some to go, just let the staff know at the register, and they’ll pack them separately from your dine-in order. Exit from Exit 2 or 3, and you can walk to the Bukchon area. Official recommendations also suggest starting your exploration from the Anguk Station area. I suggest not treating Bukchon as a "must-see" attraction, but rather allowing about 2 hours to explore at your own pace. Recommended route: Anguk Station → Bukchon Cultural Center → Gahoe-dong Hanok Alley → Bukchon Specialty Shops → Samcheong-dong The Hanok Alley in Gahoe-dong is particularly photogenic. Today, I checked out the National Folk Museum of Korea! It's a museum dedicated to the "daily lives" of the Korean people. Rather than being just a typical history museum, it's a place where you can see exactly how people lived in the past—what they ate, the houses they lived in, their annual traditions, and their lifelong journeys. Surprisingly, it's located right inside the Gyeongbokgung Palace grounds (on the Samcheong-dong side)! It's super easy to pair with a tour of the palace, and the best part is that admission is completely free. The permanent exhibition is divided into three main themes, and there's also an incredible life-sized outdoor exhibition designed like an old village. ① A Korean's Today (한국인의 오늘) This section covers everyday life from the past to the present, showcasing Korean culture and K-culture.
