As-Salt travel guide and discussion

An ancient town, As-Salt was once the most important settlement in the area between the Jordan Valley and the Eastern Desert. Because of its history as an important trading link between the Eastern Desert and the west, it was a significant place for the region’s many rulers. The Romans, Byzantines and Mameluks all contributed to the growth of the town but it was at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, during Ottoman rule, when As-Salt enjoyed its most prosperous period. It was at that time that the Ottomans established a regional administrative base in As-Salt and encouraged settlement from other parts of their empire. As the town’s status increased, many merchants arrived and, with their newly acquired wealth, built the fine houses that can still be admired in As-Salt today. These splendid yellow sandstone buildings incorporate a variety of local and European styles. Typically, they have domed roofs, interior courtyards, and characteristic tall, arched windows. Perhaps the most beautiful is the Abu Jaber mansion, built between 1892 and 1906, which has frescoed ceilings, painted by Italian artists, and is reputed to be the finest example of a 19th-century merchant house in the region.Tightly built on a cluster of three hills, As-Salt has several other places of interest, including Roman tombs on the outskirts of town, and the Citadel and site of the town’s early 13th century Ayyubid fortress, which was built by al- Ma’azzam Isa, the nephew of Saladin, soon after 1198 AD. There is also a small museum and a handicraft school where you can admire the traditional skills of ceramics, weaving, silk-screen printing and dyeing.As-Salt’s Archaeological & Folklore Museum displays artifacts dating back to the Chalcolithic period and up to the Islamic era, as well as other items relating to the history of the area. In the folklore museum, there is a good presentation of Bedouin and traditional costumes and everyday folkloric items.

🎀Zawyeh Space Cultural Center A very spacious building with a rooftop veranda. Incidentally, we found it by chance – we saw a building on the street where people were sitting on the roof, chatting and drinking coffee. It turned out that, besides the space's design being your Pinterest board for your dream home, it also frequently hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and parties. You can come here for coffee or an evening beer with friends. *This entire area of Amman is filled with such trendy and cozy establishments. 🌸Bait Baladna Cafe (بيت بلدنا) With huge portions and a simply gorgeous view, it's located right next to the cultural center, by the way. This place is already one of my saved places; I found it in the possession of some Egyptian who was traveling around the East. ☺️Aktham's 1881 Cafe It's located in the small town of As-Salt, but the establishment itself has a huge number of rooms and a gorgeous rooftop veranda with a view of the entire old city. Overall, this place is popular; we saw both locals and tourists there. ⭐️ Habibah Sweets (حلويات حبيبة) The best place, which we only found thanks to a huge line of locals and decided to see what they were selling! We ended up coming here every night to eat Jordanian kunefe. I'm not a fan of Turkish food, but here...it's something perfect. In fact, it turned out that this is a legendary establishment and is considered the standard for kunefe (knafe). #locations #jordan #east

As-Salt is located in western Jordan. It is simply called Salt City, but it has nothing to do with salt. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because in the past it was an important trade link connecting the eastern and western deserts. Therefore, it was a very prosperous city during the Ottoman era. The city's museum is a small museum, not flashy. Free admission for Jordan Pass holders. The highlight here is probably the market in front of the museum. Tourists can choose to buy souvenirs and local products. #Visit the ancient city

As-Salt is an ancient trading city and administrative centre in west-central Jordan. It is situated in the Balqa highland and is built in the crook of three hills, close to the Jordan River. As-Salt has a rich and important history and was once a major trading post between the west and the east. Beyond this, it was also a vital settlement in the region given its proximity to the Jordan Valley. As-Salt is currently nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically As-Salt was an important location for leaders and rulers of the land dating back to the Byzantine Era, the Romans, and the Mamluks. Each ruling group foraged the land and developed the area which helped the growth and expansion of the area. Most notably, As-Salt was the most profitable and robust in the early 20th century during the Ottoman era when new money and wealth was brought to the land. #2024wish

#staycation Salt is a hillside town near Amman, Jordan. Its significance as an Ottoman Empire trading hub is reflected in its Ottoman architecture. The early-20th-century Abu Jaber mansion, now the Historic Old Salt Museum, has Italian frescoed ceilings. An Ottoman mosque overlooks Hammam Street with its food market. The Archaeological Museum focuses on finds from the Chalcolithic era (4500–3300 B.C.) to the 16th century.
