They are a hundred times more stunning than the replicas. The wind at the Navagio Beach viewpoint in Zakynthos is incredibly strong, so hold onto your hat and phone. Want to get down to the beach? I get it, it’s Summer, it’s hot. The first thing you think of with Greece is the islands, turquoise sea, beaches, all of that. But trust me, if you have the time, it’s worth doing a little detour while you’re staying in Athens. Six Orthodox monasteries on giant rock towers 🤩 It sounds mad but it’s true. About 60 million years ago this was a lake bed. Millions of years of rivers, earthquakes and erosion pushed it up and carved it into the towers you see today. Monks started settling on top of them from the 11th century, and building the monasteries themselves was incredibly difficult. Some could only be reached by rope nets or removable ladders. Today, you can drive up to them but only 6 of the original 24 are still active. Inside each one you’ll find a beautiful Byzantine frescoes from the 1500s, painted by hand and still vivid today, manuscripts and figurines. Leonidio is perfect for a two night trip from Athens. It is only two hundred kilometers away and connected by good roads, so the drive is quick and easy. The Peloponnese in Greece is a special place with a relaxed vibe among the people and the wildness of outdoor Greece. Once you arrive in the small town near to the sea and surrounded by olive grooves and wandering sheep and goats you will feel a deep sense of tranquility wash over you. The intensity and bustle of Athens gone and forgotten. Within the town itself are many bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, gyro stands, fruit shops and small artists studios. Above the town stand huge orange limestone cliffs on either side that create a funnel effect above the dried river bed. The river bed leads to the sea two kilometers from the town and alongside it are olive and orange grooves. At the seaside is a small port called Plaka. It has two seafood restaurants perched over the tiny fishing harbour. The is also a huge stretch of pebble beach that runs for about four kilometers and you can find total privacy. There is a great campground directly on the beach and many classically rustic greek style studio apartments to be found on the beach in directly in Town. There are also a few Hotels in Leonidio. For an interesting afternoons side trip, I would recommend visiting the Elonis Monestary and the Saint Nicolas Monestary both are built high into a cliffs vertical wall. It is super impressive that they were built and inside the Orthodox Churches are some absolutely stunning paintings. Athens is a great place to visit because of a huge mix of cosmopolitan vibes and the connection to the ancient world. However it is important to know a few things to make the visit smoother. Get an esim to make use of the city maps, metro station locations and time tables. Use the metro to get into the city from the airport. It is possible to buy a three day tourist pass for 20€ that includes a trip from the airport into Athens. There is also a five day pass for 8.20€ but does not include the airport trips. Stay in Plaka or near the Acropoli Metro station if you have three nights or less. This is the neighborhood where the Acropolis is visible and many restaurants have fantastic views of it. There is also a huge amount of shopping to be done and I would recommend the Noble Suites as a place to stay. You must prebook your Acropolis tickets because there is a daily limit to the amount of visitors and the tickets often sell out. Hike to the top of Philopappos Hill for sunset views of Athens. This park is really near to the Acropolis and takes about twenty or thirty minutes to get to the top. Visit the National Archeological Museum in the morning and afterwards the neighborhood around it. This is a super area full of coffee bars and is a great place for spending the afternoon searching out funky shops and interacting with modern day Athenians. Walk around the Ancient Agora. It is the equivalent of a City Park but with the tall cypress trees and old olive trees. This is Qatar Airways with 25kg checked baggage, rather than a stripped-down fare where baggage quickly pushes the real cost higher. The routing is also surprisingly practical. Singapore to Athens is via Doha, while the return gives you a Boeing 787-8 from Athens to Doha followed by an Airbus A350 XWB back to Singapore. The return connection in Doha is only 1 hour 25 minutes, with baggage checked through. So you are getting a full-service airline, baggage included, widebody aircraft on the long sectors and sensible connections for S$771 return. That combination matters more to me than simply finding the lowest headline fare. Germany has some great places to visit for those who put the effort in but Nuremberg would be number one on my list! Sure people know about it and visit but not in the vast tourist numbers like Athens, Paris or London. I have recommended this medieval town and to family and friends for years and everyone always comments they have heard of the Christmas Markets but did not realize how gorgeous the old town is. It has an airport and is well connected to the test of the country with the train network. From Berlin the fast train (ICE) stops on the way through to Munich, so this could be a in-between over night stop. The Park Plaza Nuremberg is a very short walk from the train station (two minutes). It is near the Frauentour and a repilca medieval street. I recommend it for the location and really nice rooms! There is an old town surrounded by huge sandstone walls, towers and the quintessential moat. Although the moat is dry nowadays, you need to use your imagination to cast you back to medieval times. The Pegnitz runs through the middle of town making for fantastic photo opportunities. While exploring the town which is fairly large and would take the full day or possibly two. I suggest seeing the Kaiserburg, the castle it has excellent views over the old town.The Weissgerbergasse, the Hauptmarket Square, and the Cathedral. I would keep my eyes open while walking around for one of the many bakeries for an afternoon coffee and cake. Athens felt like a city where ancient history and everyday life constantly overlap. I could be looking at a 2,000-year-old monument one minute and sitting at a busy café the next. 1. Explore the Acropolis early I arrived at the Acropolis in the morning and headed straight for the Parthenon. The views over Athens were incredible, but I enjoyed wandering around Ancient Agora just as much. Getting there early made a huge difference. 2. Get lost in Plaka After the ruins, I wandered through Plaka, following narrow streets filled with small shops, balconies, and tavernas. I stopped for grilled souvlaki and Greek coffee, then continued toward Monastiraki Square, where the atmosphere was much livelier. 3. Watch Athens turn golden My favorite evening was spent at Lycabettus Hill. I climbed up before sunset and watched the city slowly light up beneath me. The Acropolis glowing in the distance was worth every step. I also made time for the National Archaeological Museum, which gave me a deeper look at Greece beyond the famous landmarks. What I loved about Athens was its contrast. It’s ancient, noisy, imperfect, and incredibly alive. Athens was one of the stops on our cruise, and because we didn’t have much time in port, we booked an organised excursion from the ship. A bus took us to the Acropolis, which was definitely easier than trying to work out transport ourselves while mentally calculating how many hours remained before the ship sailed without us. The Acropolis was the obvious choice. We’d seen the Parthenon so many times in photographs that somewhere in our imagination it had grown into something absolutely enormous, towering over Athens like half the city had been built around it. Then we finally reached the top, looked at it and had a slightly awkward thought: Is it… smaller than we expected? 😄 It wasn’t disappointing in the sense that there was nothing to see. Quite the opposite: standing among buildings that have survived for almost two and a half thousand years is extraordinary, and the views across Athens alone make you stop for a while. It was simply one of those rare moments when reality had to compete with years of carefully chosen photographs — and the photographs had apparently been using their best angles. There is actually some truth behind that feeling. The Acropolis rises above the surrounding city, and photographs taken from a distance can use perspective and focal length to make it dominate the skyline much more dramatically than it seems when you’re standing close to it. The irony is that the Parthenon itself has been playing with human vision for considerably longer than photographers have. Its apparently straight lines contain subtle curves, while the columns have slight inclinations and carefully calculated variations designed to make the building look more harmonious. So perhaps we shouldn’t blame modern photography too much — the ancient Greeks understood visual tricks long before Instagram arrived. 😄 What impressed us more than expected was the view from the top. Athens seems to continue forever, a huge pale city spreading towards the mountains and the sea, and from up there you suddenly understand just how enormous it really is. The city itself, however, didn’t have the same effect on us. Nothing went wrong and we had a perfectly good day, but Athens simply wasn’t a place that made us immediately think, we need to come back and spend a week here. That became even more noticeable because Mykonos, another stop on the same cruise that we’d had almost no expectations for, had completely won us over. Travel has a sense of humour like that. The place you barely thought about can become a favourite, while the one you’ve seen in photographs for years leaves you saying, “I’m glad we saw it… but I thought it would be bigger.” So, was it worth it? For us, yes — once. I wouldn’t skip the Acropolis on a first visit to Athens, and I’m genuinely glad we used part of our limited cruise stop to see it. Standing beside the Parthenon is still very different from seeing it in a photograph, even when the photograph has been slightly more generous with the scale. Would we book another trip specifically to return to Athens? Probably not. And that’s perfectly fine. Not every famous place has to become your favourite place. Practical information 🚌 We took an organised excursion from our cruise ship, with transport to the Acropolis by bus. With limited time in port, not having to organise the transfer ourselves was useful. 🎟️ Acropolis admission is currently €30 for a standard ticket. The Acropolis Museum is separate, so don’t assume the museum is included with the archaeological-site ticket. 👟 Wear comfortable shoes. There are slopes, steps and uneven surfaces, and polished stone can be slippery. ☀️ Bring water and sun protection in warm weather. Much of the archaeological site is exposed. ⏰ For cruise passengers, leave a time buffer. Ancient Greece has waited thousands of years for you; your cruise ship may be considerably less patient. We went expecting one of the biggest highlights of our cruise. It wasn’t — but I’m still glad we went.
