I visited Ávila during my stay in Madrid and honestly it became one of my favorite day trips in Spain. The city feels completely different from Madrid: quieter, medieval, very walkable and full of history. If you only have one day outside Madrid, I really recommend Ávila. ✨ The best part is arriving and seeing the huge medieval walls surrounding the city. They are incredibly well preserved and the atmosphere feels almost like a movie set. I spent most of the day just walking around the old town, eating local food and enjoying the views. Getting there from Madrid was very easy. I took the train from Madrid Atocha to Ávila and the trip was comfortable and simple. Depending on the train, it usually takes around 1h 30m. Some people also leave from Chamartín, so check both stations because prices and schedules can change. I bought the ticket in advance and paid around €10–25 each way depending on the train type and timing. If you arrive at Madrid airport (Barajas), the easiest option is taking Cercanías or Metro to Atocha or Chamartín first, then continuing by train to Ávila. You can also rent a car directly from the airport. Driving takes around 1h 20m and is a good option if you want to visit nearby villages too. One of the best things to do is walking on top of the Walls of Ávila. The ticket was around €8 and definitely worth it because the views are amazing, especially near sunset. The Spanish state-run hotel chain, Parador, can be found in many historic old towns, and the one in Ávila is highly recommended for an overnight stay! The Parador in Ávila is a converted 16th-century palace, and stepping inside, you can immediately sense the "aura of antiquity." My favorite part is the expansive garden, with its towering ancient trees creating an incredible atmosphere. The lobby features an exquisite artwork, which I later discovered was actually leather carving! The hotel is located right in the historic district of Ávila, making it a prime location. In the morning, you can explore the old town and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast. We visited during the summer when the days are long, and we were lucky to catch a stunning sunset after dinner. The room was surprisingly comfortable and quiet, with elegant and cozy decor. The breakfast was also quite good, breaking my preconceived notions about state-run hotels. However, the dinner was relatively average. Overall, our stay at Parador de Ávila was fantastic. Situated within the city walls, the historical architecture is impeccably preserved, making it a truly enjoyable experience!
